Akai Launches Android Powered Smart Box turn TV into Smart TV – Specs, Price & Features

Akai, the Japanese firm has announced a new Android powered digital media device called Smart Box which turns any TV to a smart TV. Smart Box by Akai will take on Amkette’s EvoTV another smart TV box launched earlier this year and Portronics Limebox offer the similar feature at Rs 8500. So let’s go through Akai Smart Box features and capabilities as a smart digital box.

Akai Smart Box comes with a wireless mouse which you don’t get with the present generation smart TVs. Smart Box is based on the Google’s open source Android platform bringing in the life to your television of any kind by converting it to smart TV capabilities. So whether you have CRT or Plasma or LED or LCD TV it can be converted to the functionalities of a smart TV.Akai Smart Box

Once you have the Akai Smart Box TV added to your television, it can perform all functions which can be done on tablet. You can now connect to internet via the Google Android browser to browse your favorite websites, social networking sites, check whether reports, market updates, book travel tickets, watch videos on YouTube, shop online and see what your friends are up to by opening your Facebook, Twitter or Skype.

The device can perform like a Wi Fi router as it allows users to create Wi Fi hotspot, the functionality found in the Android devices by connecting either your Ethernet cable or the 2G/3G dongle (all dongle supported). You can connect up to 5 digital devices to access this internet shared. You can even print your documents from Wi Fi enabled printers of any brand like HP, Canon, Lexmark, many more. What more interesting is that you can get all the apps, widgets, tools and games from the Google Play Store directly. The features doesn’t end here as it has a SD card slot by which you can directly plug in the SD card and see the picture directly on the big screen.

  1. who wants a device with an OS 4 generation back… It should have been android ICS 4.0 as a launching OS upgradable to JB… with 2.3 it looks outdated device.

  2. Similar to ANDROID 4.0 MINI PC. But looks cool.

  3. Let me have your personal view about the utility of these devices. Also, will they upgrade to ICS or Jellybean at a later date? Samsung or Sony are they jumping into mfg these devices?
