I tried to update my samsung galaxy S SGH-i897 and after the update of Kies mini , while trying to install it to my phone, I got this message:
    SGH-I897 could not be updated
    1. detach and reattach the mobile phone’s battery
    2. reboot the mobile phone, and then retry to upgrade again
    * if the mobile phone fails to reboot, please use “mobile phone emergency recover”

Update went better than expected. I did get a xml parsing error just as the update to Froyo began but the update moved forward after clearing the error. The jump from Froyo to Gingerbread went without a hitch.

Don’t know if you have fixed this yet, but I’ve found two different ways to fix this:
      1. Root your phone and d/l Titanium Backup. From there you can pull the tethering manager app and freeze it.
      2. Hard Reset.
Resetting your phone isn’t desirable, I know. But anytime you put anything that’s not stock on your phone you’re bound to run into some bugs.

If you root the phone, install Titanium Backup (free version) you will be able to delete the Tethering Manager. If you don’t use this feature you won’t miss it and this bug disappears.

I really want to upgrade but seeing so many negative reviews about it, I’m worried to try. I read a review on one website that the upgrade actually bricked their phone. Has anyone tried the upgrade lately. I was wondering if they fixed all the issues out. Should I try to upgrade ?

Each time I try to update, the update downloads through Kies, but when it comes to the actual firmware update on the phone, the USB driver disconnects and my phone and Kies freeze up. I’ve tried re-downloading Kies, the Captivate drivers, and disabling my firewall. ANy ideas?

I updated phone, now intermittently when I try to reply to a text message it sends it to someone else in my phone book. This has cause some confusion and distress due to work related content going to the wrong recipient. Can I go back to Froyo until this glitch is fixed? how?

I’m having the same problem. I’ve done the suggested steps to no avail, and tried the update from two separate PCs, one running Windows 7 64, the other Vista 32. Kies acknowledges my phone, leads me to the licensing agreement, then craps out while downloading the update. This is a brand-new Captivate that hasn’t been rooted or otherwise modified in any capacity.

This update killed my wifi. AT&T was unable to fix. I am going to have to download a custom ROM and see if I can fix my wifi. I used over 65% of my data plan in one day just trying to figure out how to fix it.
    Update at your own risk!
Since I will be voiding my warranty by installing a custom rom, I’m going to root it too.

I flashed (no root) build KJ1 a few weeks ago and now want to install the official Kies Mini version for my i897. I called Samsung who said I can’t get back to Froyo so I wonder what can I do at this point? I got an ADB error when I tried to connect with the Froyo-to-Gingerbread Kies but don’t know what the next step should be. Any ideas?
