How to Enable USB Storage on Android Devices

USB Connected LogoFor all those who has recently purchased an Android smart phone and would like to know on how you can enable the USB storage right on your Android device then we will help you to do the same which we will see in the due course of this article. Please note that we will be seeing on how you can do the same in the Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100 and will  be similar for all other Android devices too. We at androidadvices ensure that every single thing is being covered and if you feel that anything is left out then you can always make sue of Comments section to express your thoughts on the same as we will ensure that we will try to covert eh same on this site.

Please note that this process is one of the simple process and doesn’t require you to either download any special application or even need to tweak your Phone to do the same. All you need to do is to just follow the simple and easy to understand instructions along with the screen shots which will guide you on how you can Enable USB Storage on your Android Device.

Procedure to Enable USB Storage on Android Devices:

  • First up from your Home screen of your phone you will have to click on the “Applications” and once you get into the same you need to find an option called “Settings”, select the same as shown in the below screen shot.

Settings

  • Once you get into the Settings, you will now have to tap on the option of “Wireless and Network” as shown in the below screen shot for your convenience.

Wireless and Network Settings

  • Next up in the Wireless and Networks, you will find many options like Wi Fi Direct Settings, KIES via Wi Fi, Bluetooth Settings, Tethering, VPN Settings etc. All you need to choose is the “USB Utilities” option.

USB Utilities

  • Now, up next click on the tab which is “Connect Storage to PC” after which it will prompt you to attach the USB chord connecting to the computer and phone which you can see in the below screen shot,

Connect USB Storage

  • After this you will see a green robot showing the USB symbol along with an option of “Connect USB Storage”. Tap or select the same and then that’s it as this will connect the phone with the computer in the USB Mode turned ON.

So that’s it in this way you have now successfully enabled the USB Storage on your Android Device. Just in case if you were unable to enable the same do let us know as we will guide you to enable the same which is the unlikely case with most of the users. Last but not the least the biggest advantage is that you can use this just like a USB drive so as to accommodate all your data within the phone upon connecting with the USB cable and also most importantly this also allows you to explore the same as a physical drive which allows you to drag and drop the contents to / from the device.

With the latest Android OS coming out, i.e. the Android Jelly Bean and Android 4.4 KitKat, you would be seeing even better options, and usually the smartphone comes with options for sending a software to the computer to install the drivers of the Android phone, before you could access the USB storage of the Android phone.

I think you ALL are looking in the wrong place. After reading this whole thread, there is incomplete information that isn’t being disclosed. Just to set the benchmark, I have:
Samsung Galaxy S-II (Model sph-d710bst, base GT-i9100G version, Android ICS 4.0.4)
    Provider: Boost Mobile
    Network: Sprint CDMA/WiMax
    Hardware Version: D710.10
    Build#:IMM76I.FL24
    Kernel Ver.: 3.0.15.981989
PRL:61009 (if this applies to Unlimited Monthly Customers)
Purchased: 2.12.13, in White Plains, NY
    Activated by: SprintNextel PCS
    Root Status: None/Stock ROM
These details are crucial to understanding whether or not a CARRIER has imposed limitations on a service or phone ability, such as USB mass storage. I heard from multiple sites, such as androidforums, sprintusers, and even xda developers that this process ( I mean activating USB mass storage on a Epic 4G touch model with -d710 as its model suffix) is next to IMPOSSIBLE. All this chatter is making my head spin. Mr. Neela, as I have been to a number of sites saying this, you should focus on a workaround for all of us who have this issue. That means software that can help us and not leave us running (or typing)around in circles. My version of the S2, based on the information provided, does NOT have UMS capability. It was suggested by a random topic I found online to ‘root’ my device to install an app that will allow the UMS to function. Issue #1-For one program, no.
#2-Rooting a device disables support for all stock services (Google Play, Updates, and a lot of apps derived from that source) Sure there are other markets that cater to ‘superusers’, but believe me, it’s not worth it.
#3-I give this advice based on what I am told by live people who have done and regretted doing this. It’s not for everyone.
I know this is a mouthful, but this thread is giving me eyestrain.
Any reply I will look at eagerly.

Go to “Settings” –> “Applications” –> “Wireless and Network” –> “USB Utilities” –> Click on “Connect Storage to PC”

That’s it. Now connect USB cable and you will be connected in USB Mass Storage mode,

    Ok, update.

My cable was the problem — my home cable works fine at my work computer. It automatically connects and pulls up the green robot, and the Verizon stuff auto-installs (after confirmation popup) just like it should.

So…either this cable is busted or was designed only to be a USB power cable. I don’t recall it being described as such when I bought it, so be careful when you order such.

  25. Reply Josephine May 4, 2012 at 3:19 am

Ya know what, I am using a different USB cable, one that came with a wall plug for charging. I wonder if it is a stripped USB cable that only passes through the power.

I will test that theory. Maybe there are such cables, or maybe this is a broken one, or maybe it’s a broken one where the USB power works so they sold it to the wall socket company. However, that was through Amazon and were two separate products, so it should function as a normal USB cable. Still, it might be broken.

Or maybe I did the equivalent on the phone of “Nah, don’t connect, and never ask me again” and don’t remember it.

  26. Reply Josephine May 4, 2012 at 2:50 am

Droid Charge, 2.3.4, it used to mount 2 drives to my PC when I plugged it in via USB. This let me get at pictures and video I took from my PC.

Now I plug it in, it starts charging, but does not mount them anymore. The SD cards are still usable on the phone (so this is double confirmation they aren’t being diverted as USB drives over the USB.)

The PC used to fire up some Verizon software that somehow auto-installed earlier (this worked for months.) Now nothing happens.

I open the Device Manager under Windows XP, and it doesn’t flash or change when I plug the phone in or unplug it, so it’s like the OS isn’t recognizing anything.

So is there a setting on the Phone somewhere? I have “unmounted” the SD card (but I think that is just for removal from the phone itself) and remounted it, both before and after plugging the phone USB to the PC. Nothing.

I have tried setting the SD card mode from Music to Files to Ask and back, nothing.

The green robot doesn’t pop up either to ask. I wonder if I disabled “ask” somehow, if so, how to re-enable? It isn’t that choice of “music” “files” or “ask” since I’ve run that option into the ground now.

New Galaxy ace user here, also not seeing USB utilities in the settings as described.. I have tried to connect my device with my Macbook via both USB and Bluetooth.

It seems there is “something” missing in the smartphone programming because via Bluetooth (which paired fine with my computer, and I can use the Galaxy to Bluetooth pictures to other phones etc) I get the error message “this device does not have the necessary services” and using the USB it says that Kies does not recognise the device.

It is obviously a problem with some of these Galaxy devices, seems crazy I can get music on an ancient Nokia but not on my smartphone which supposedly has the abilities to transfer and store music – just frustrated I can’t get it on my device any way I try.

    Hi,

I am using a Galaxy S2, purchased some 2 months back, i used to connect my phone through USB by – Apps>settings>wireless>usb utilities>connect to PC storage> then connecting the USB. then the green robot… & so om, it used to get connected but now i dont know why the green robot doesnt appear.
After clicking on Connect to PC storage, it asks to connect the cable, i connect the USB, there is the USB connection sound & that is it….it doesnt do anything!! the same screen with ‘connect to PC storage’ button stays..
i even tried connecting USB without this setting, i.e. directly connecting the USB – it says ‘MTP connected’ in the status bar, charging starts but no mass storage.

    Please help!!

Now while disconnecting your phone from pc…>first click on Disconnect storage from pc on your phone >Then safely remove usb device on your pc….if you disconnect the other way,the same problem will occur again and you will have to restart your phone to connect to pc.

  35. Reply damon March 21, 2012 at 2:17 am

i’ve followed the instructions in this forum and several others including my carrier’s website.

i get to the point where i’m told to plug the usb line in. but when i do that, it just starts charging my phone. it doesn’t recognize recognize it as a USB line so it keeps the message up instructing me to plug the USB in.

no other solutions have worked either – enabling USB debugging, plugging in the cable while its off and then turning it on… i’ve tried everything from every forum.

    sux.

I followed these steps and finally it worked, but here’s the thing. I recently had to replace my galaxy s2. The first one automatically popped up the android guy and prompted me to connect when I simply plugged in my phone to my computer. Now that I’ve switched to another galaxy s2, I don’t get that prompt. Instead, I have to go through all the menus first, click the button to tell it I want to connect to my PC and then it prompts me to actually insert my usb cable. Then it will show me another screen, the one I’m used to seeing with the android guy and the button to connect for storage.

How can I make it pop up automatically whenever I plugin my usb cable? Any help is most appreciated. Thanks!

Hey, thanks for the advice. Because this column is advice for beginners could you please explain what ‘mount’ actually means? I mean, why this term was used by the designers. Because getting the message \please mount SD card\ puts me in mind of the old joke:

An elderly woman walks into a taxidermist with two dead cats.
    \They are much-loved family pets,\ she says.
\Would you like them mounted?\ asks the taxidermist.
\No thanks, I will have them side by side.\

I cannot do this with my SD card.

To everyone who didn’t find any “USB Utilities” option :
    1) Connect USB cable to your computer…
    2) Try to Locate “Notifications” (for my 2.3.1 tablet it is in Home – press “Menu” and it is there)…
    3) check out for Notification item with text “USB connected” (in mine tablet it is “There is a problem using SD card for USB mass storage”, “USB connected”) – press it, and you should see a button “Turn on USB storage”.
    Cheers !

    Hai Neal

Thanks for this tutorial. I have a question though I am not sure whether this is the suitable article to ask on.

How to install or move my apps from system storage to internal storage in Galaxy S2? The system storage has only limited space and I would like to fully utilize my internal storage.

Have you ever covered this topic? if you have, please give me the link. Thanks!

    • Reply Oktavian Putra August 19, 2011 at 9:30 pm

What I mean by “internal storage” is “internal usb storage”

what issue you are facing exactly!

  69. Reply David August 8, 2011 at 10:31 pm

The option “USB Utilities” is not shown on my Galaxy Ace. Also I keep getting the message “getting Low on Phone storage remove programs” but I don’t have much on my phone. I have a utility App2SD and 1Tap cleaner that I use but I only have 7 apps on the Phone and none are movable to the 16gb Sd card. I am told that I have 180.9MB total on the SD and 19.14mb available on the phone. Ant help would be appreciated. I also have a problem of the phone turning its self off frequently.

    • Reply NeaL Pradeep August 18, 2011 at 11:00 am

in some apps developer hasnt given option to move the same to sd. for which we cant do anything!

In Galaxy Ace GT S 5380 when you connect the cable it automatically activates the green Robot. USB Mass storage is in built I think. If I am wrong please correct me. Thank you. Bye
