Galaxy S I9000

Galaxy S & Tab to get Value Pack instead of Full ICS Update

Galaxy S ICS.4.0There were rumours that Galaxy S will not get Ice Cream Sandwich and we were sure of it as it has hardware limitations. For Ice Cream Sandwich to run smoothly on your device, your phone should have sufficient RAM and ROM which weren’t adequate enough on Galaxy S phone. Along with first generation of Galaxy S phone, the Galaxy Tab too lacks in hardware requirements for Ice Cream Sandwich update. The decision by Samsung to skip Galaxy S from Ice Cream Sandwich update disappointed many of the Galaxy S users and upon speculation around, Samsung came out with the news that instead of Ice Cream Sandwich update, the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab users will get the Value Pack instead of official Ice Cream Sandwich update.

So what does this Value Pack brings in for the Galaxy S users? The reports say that this value pack update will provide improvements in web browsing, multi tasking and new widgets overlays. However the device Android version will be Android 2.3 but not Android 4.0. Interesting point to observe is that the Galaxy Nexus S phone has similar specifications as that of Galaxy S and yet it will receive the ICS update but Galaxy S will not, appears like Samsung had problems with TouchWiz user interface.

As far as we know Ice Cream Sandwich update for Galaxy S will not arrive but looks like value pack will arrive soon.

Hang on, lets think for a mo.

As operating systems progress, they need more ram and better processors & GPU’s. Look at the requirements of Windows and Linux, they all follow this pattern. A machine purchased for use with Windows XP cannot be EXPECTED to run Windows 7 without some upgrade.

Now apply this to the SGS I9000.

It was originally supplied with Android 2.2 and hardware specced to this level, with some room for future OS upgrades, but no ability to update the hardware (a limitation of the smartphone design). We now have 2.3.5 (or thereabouts) with requires little extra resources, but to jump to ICS (v4) which is designed for multi-core processors and better GPU’s is a huge ask of older hardware.

Yes you can shoe-horn news OS’s into older hardware (to a point), but something has to give and you will not get the full experience the OS is capable of, so why bother?

I accept there is also a commercial decision (don’t offer the latest OS and people will upgrade the hardware to get it), but that is only part of the reasons. The I900 is obsolete hardware, so we can’t expect Samsung to support it indefinitely.

A week or so ago, you showed how to install ICS on Samsung Galaxy S (Captivate). So based on reports, ICS seems to run just fine on Galaxy S. As you say, maybe it is because the couldn’t get Touchwiz to work. Not a big loss as far as I am concerned.

I haven’t installed ICS on my Captivate yet but I will.

It seems contradictory. Before. Samsung denied to provide ICS 4,0,, It leaked info saying that rethinking on it. Now saying about the value pack. What should we believe? We 20 million users of SGS want ICS 4,0,, as the third party ICS alfa n beta vrsion is being tested in SGS.

I have to tell you, guys!
Samsung sucks, big time!! I going to use a cooked rom for my SG1, and I’ll never buy Samsung again! ever!
If it was perfect, I could understand, but because the original TW is damn slow, at least they could work to improve performance, using ICS.
I think the believe we are “cash cows”! so, go the hell SAMSUNG! I will enjoy seeing you asking for chapter 11!!

hi samsung u have disappointed me because i have bought i9003 lcd one week back. unaware of the fact that u havent provided the upgrade of ics. cost was not the factor for my buying. i could have afforded for galaxy s2 itself. just not knowing the fact simply gave me the punishment to bear the nonupgradable phone for long time. thanksssss for not providing ics.

and what about supporting languages in Android 4
all past android versions were not able to read\write a lot of languages which is really a drawback in them all!!
