How to Root Galaxy S on Android 2.3.4 XXJVP Firmware

Future Beyond LogoLast time we saw on how you can install the latest firmware of Gingerbread 2.3.4 on your Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000. After many of the users expressed their wish to root the phone, we have decided to come out with an article on how you can root the device that’s Galaxy S GT I9000. Rooting basically unlocks the phone to a whole new possibilities as you not only get additional tools but also get the famous functionalities like the Superuser and also the other tools like Titanium Backup Pro which is nothing but a simple backup tool which used to backup contacts, messages etc with just a click of a button.

Please note that the procedure which is mentioned below is only applicable for the Galaxy S GT I9000 phones which are currently on the version of XXJVP 2.3.4. To check that on which version you are currently ON, you will just need to check the same. For checking on which firmware you are currently on, you will have to go to the Settings > About Phone > Firmware Version where you will find the version of Android OS where it will show 2.3.4 as shown in the below screen shot.

Note : You will have to reconfigure the APN settings after updating the firmware to access the data services and the Internet services as all the Internet APN settings will be reset. You will have to contact your Service provider to get more info on the APN Settings or alternatively you too can make a note of it. Not to forget also configure the MMS Settings or take down the MMS Settings as this too will need to be re configured after the rooting process.

    Hi,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S 4G SGH-T959V. I was able to install Gingerbread 2.3.4 from your instructions. I wanted to root my phone so I could restore my personal settings. I realized that I was in the wrong page and used the root instructions of I9000 to my phone. I am unable to get into the download mode. I see both the Galaxy S 4g screen followed by Galaxy S I9000 and goes into the looping cycle. I see I was able to start into ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.5. I would appreciate your help and guide me to restore 2.3.4 on my phone. Thank you in advance.

    Hay Neal,

I have a samsung galaxy S GT i9000 and I have upgraded the firmware from 2.1 to Gingerbread XXJVQ 2.3.4. Now I am trying to root my device as i want to install/read “Hindi” texton my device and as per all available post, I need to root the device to achieve the same,
So, I’m following exactly the same procedure as mentioned in all the post viz. – downloading rooting package XXJVQ_2.3.4 / unzipping the same/ launching Odin 3V 1.7/ connecting my device to the laptop in download mode ( by pressing vol down+Home+start Kies) and than adding rooting package CF-Root-XX_UNK_JVQ-v3.7-CWM3RFS.tar in PDA and then hitting on start…

After doing all this I’m waiting for the process to finish since half an hour and m seeing no progress at Odin ( it is still showing Added!!
    Odin v.3 engine (ID:12)..
    File analysis..
    SetupConnection..)

All in all… m stuck and don’t know what to do ..
    Plz Help…

the last time i tried doing the same everything happened within 5 mins. but the titanium backup was getting failed all the time so i tried repeating the rooting process… but i think it has gone even worse…

plz suggest the way out… :(

I checked one user reporting this will work on XXJVQ firmware and as I just installed gingerbdread 2.3.4 it on my Samsung i9000 I proceed to apply this procedure.
I did as instructions but Odin never passed from setup message. Didn’t I say I’m a newbie?, I closed that Odin program and tried to shutdown the phone, tried to reboot with up volumen + home + shutdown button to no avail.
None of this worked so Itried again restarting Odin and redoing procedure but again it didn’t pass setup message.
I didn’t know I shouldn’t disconnect phone so I didt it and appear the dreaded icon of the phone exclamation mark and computer all in yellow icon. I couldn’t pass this icon. Turining ot down after holdong the shutdown button worked but when turning it up again that yellow icon.
I checked the forums and found that would be a bricked phone sign. I was considering the resistance method but anyway tried again, I reconnect phone, I run a higher version of Odin 1.83, I hold the buttons for the reload mode and the phone went into download mode. I flash again gingerbread as I have done this morining and recover back my phone, what a relief.
I’m posting this so it culd help anyone having the same trouble than me. My phone is a mexican Telcel i9000T, well, not anymore as the gingerbread thing I did previously let it at just 9000, I still haven’t installe the 850 band fix to bring it back to T (I guess that’s for that, I dunno, I’m a newbie). Anyway, I still don’t have data service so not big deal.
This gingerbread sw it’s not rooted but I better look for installing the superone click method or a cocked rom which is rooted. I’m not clear as I’m still learning
    cheers

Dear Neal Pradeep. You may remember me from 2.3.3’s discussion. Well I updated my cell to 2.3.4 and rooted the same. I am very happy with tha CWM application. I have a question though. I took a backup (images) now if somehow I manage to brick or re-lock or distroy my OS (ie installing custom roms etc) will I be able to completely restore my OS from those images?

By the way I am very very thankful to you for your guidance and tutorials which are very easy to follow and are very accurate. Thanks again :)

It is VERY frustrating as I have a lot that I want to download using your material. Please come up with a solution.

    Hi There!

Nice Guide, worked fine for me. Except one thing, even though i think it has nothing to do with ur root package; the first time i tried to flash the root, odin stocked (i used the version in your package) at ” Setup Connection”. After 10 minutes i unplugged the device, shut it down, restarted in dl mode an tried again and everything went fine within a few seconds. Had the same issue wehen in flashed darkys rom, but with a different odin version (1.82 i guess…). Dont know why :S

So if it stocks at the mentioned part, just do as i did, guess you can hardly brick ur sgs doing this…

    Cheers

just follow the above instructions and dont try to mix and match the files as that may cause serious damage

@francis since the CWM ROMs are not stable as of now we would not recommend the same for our readers as of now. But as soon as we find it bit useful then we will surely cover the same!1
