How To Update Samsung Galaxy S I9000 to Gingerbread XXJVP 2.3.4 Firmware

Galaxy S LogoIt’s been a great journey for all the SAMSUNG Galaxy S owners, despite the roll out of SAMSUNG Galaxy S 2 this doesn’t seem to have stopped the excitement for all the Galaxy S owners. All the users of SAMSUNG Galaxy S owners, there is a great news that you can now update your Galaxy S GT I9000 with the latest version of Gingerbread 2.3.4 version. With a host of new features along with an all new file system you can now dose your phone with this latest version. Please note that this version is the leak version and not the official version, so you will have to note the same before updating with the same. This news version of Gingerbread 2.3.4 is dubbed as XXJVP 2.3.4 version.

Also, most importantly if you update your Galaxy S with the same that doesn’t mean that you have rooted the device. If you have rooted your Galaxy S before then please note that after updating the device with the Gingerbread 2.3.4 you will have to again follow the procedure to root the Galaxy S as the rooting access is revoked after doing this update.

What would happen if I check Re-partition? Is this recommended?

• Neal Pradeep says:

steffan, we haven’t tried the same!

• Imran Ithisham says:

I normally use the re-partition option for my updates but the risk of damaging the phone is high… you could lose your download mode option if the device fails halfway through the partition process…

• muki says:

can you help me please ,,because i check the re-partition ,,and i can not start up my galaxy s,,,its just on dowloading mode nonnstop,,on factory rs,please help me

• Imran Ithisham says:

Hi Muki,

If your device is getting into the download mode, you can proceed with the normal procedure for updating and you can get your phone up and running in no time. If your phone refuses to go to the download mode and all what you get is a small phone icon with a data cable, you have to remove the battery and insert it again. Then while holding the VOL down button + Home Button + Power, get into the download mode and proceed with the update. Make sure you do not have any dongles attached to your PC while you detect your phone in ODIN…

updated mine from official kies 2.3.3 and not happy about the battery drain so I tried this new update posted by Neal…

Now I’m happy with this 2.3.4 update cuz it solved the battery drain problem, so far it’s running smooth, but noticed just a slight bug i think regarding the time on my phone during screen lock hope you could give solution to this…

the actual time is the one on the upper right (8:05pm)
and the bug is that on the upper left (12:05pm)

sometimes it is quite confusing….

• Neal Pradeep says:

restart the computer as well as the phone (if its in download mode then pull off the battery) and retry the process from the start!

• Pradeep says:

Before reading your response I did the same thing. One advice to all the reader is to follow exactly all the steps mentioned above (include shutting down kies in the task manager). Its running fine now. The reason why I switched from 2.3.2 to 2.3.4 is the very reason that the phone was getting hanged quite often. Like when you open a text message and the BOOM the phone hangs or you open Gallery and same thing was happening. But then I thought of putting in official 2.3.3 using samsung kies, but with no luck as kies was not allowing to update the firmware at all. Then I saw your article on 2.3.4 and thought of following it up. And its working fine now. The only person who is angry with this update is my 8 yr old son. He completed many level on Angry Bird and now when he saw that he has to redo it again he was quite annoyed.
But anyway thanks Neal for this nice post. Keep doing this good work.

Regards,
Pradeep

Hi bro thanks a ton for the post. And no doubt this is the greatest of all android sites I have ever come across. It’s out of step by step instruction that you people provide to a beginner like me. I upgraded my galaxy s to official gingerbread even before it was available on kies and it was wonderful and today I have upgraded it to 2.3.4 thanks all to you people and the free e mail we get about new updates. It’s all just wonder full. But with the latest update I have not ben able to make much of a difference. Can you please explain me the advantages that I have got out of this update thanKs

Hi Neal, I have updated mine to 2.3.4 & I did a mistake by wiping my data while SIM card is still inside. Ended up all data in my SIM is gone & my phone couldn’t recognize it, hence I had to change my SIM card.
So far I have set the APN correctly. I COULD surf the internet.
The only problem is I couldn’t add a Google account at all, hence I couldn’t access Gmail, Gtalk, Market applications. There is always this error message “can’t establish a reliable data connection to the server”.
Is there any advise what I should do or check?
Thank you

• Neal Pradeep says:

check with your network services and your sim data can’t be erased with the firmware update process!

Hi Neal,
Eversince I upgraded to gingerbread (2.3.3 & 2.3.4) I had several fast drain issue with my battery. Now I’m using XXJVP with Voodoo lagfix and still I faced several battery fast drain issue. While it was still ~75% & I used whatsapp or other application, suddenly my phone switched off. When I switched it on again, there’s a warning that the battery is low (30%. This has happened several times. I wanted to attach the screenshot of the battery use but there is no attach file feature here.
Is this a common glitch to gingerbread?
Is there any way to rectify this issue?
I do appreciate your kind help.
Thank you in advance.

@Manoj and everyone else asking/thinking the same thing… Honeycomb (Android v3) will NOT be coming to ANY phones.. Honeycomb is a tablet-centric OS. The next version of Android for smartphones will be Android 4, dubbed IceCream Sandwich.

Back to my initial question ;-) How is the JVP on battery life? I know it was said on AndroidAdvices that JVK was best battery life. Also, how is the cellular radio (not FM, but cell signal, etc) with JVP?

76. Hightower says:

Hi Neal,

Ive just upgraded to XJVP 2.3.4 as 2.3.3 had bad battery drain issues. Now the same is happening.
Yes the cache was cleared. I did everything to the letter. Factory reset and all.
It barely charges.
on previous 2.2 there was no issue at all.

Now perhaps i missed something cause i saw a post on here that someone has a vibrant and this is not for the vibrant? Odd because the beginning of post says its for samsung galaxy S unlocked I9000 which is what my phone is but it is a vibrant phone. Is it screwed up because of this?
What is the fix for battery drain and do i have to go back to a previous version. If so, how.

77. omik says:

Hey …Hi Pradeep… Upgraded to 2.3.4.. noticed some “bugs” (maybe) after rooting the bootup animation is not having any sound… multiple downloads from market when seen in notification area are a total mess…!!! Baseband = Modem = Phone = I9000XXJVP
Lagfix = on
Tweaks = Juwe’s RAM optimization script
CPU locked at 1 GHz
Quadrant = 2109
Theme = LockeOn’s ock theme MOD

i’m a little confuse with those, what is it? need i flash it to my phone?

Is there someone who found some bugs with this firmware or its only me????

• pyrophreak says:

I found some bugs… not major. The battery life seemed to be much better than the 2.3.3 I had on (XWJVH), but many many apps does not want to install on this 2.3.4. Also 2.3.3 seemed to run a bit smoother, scrolling and so on. I went back to 2.3.3.

85. Krishna says:

Hi Neal, thanks for the instructions. I followed it exactly and managed to flash my phone to gingerbread 2.3.4. The only problem I notice is battery drain. Its only been 5hr since I charged it to 100%, now its down to 60%. I have not used it that much either.

It works ! .. after downloading and rebooting twice. GReat work.

How about this question — why on earth does one have to run Windows to be able to do this? Why aren’t you open source people making things like this for linux/ubuntu?

Not sure if this happened to others but in my case when I tried to update to 2.3.4 without my SD card inside my mobile I had troubles, couldn’t update the phone. Later I put the card back and worked perfect! Just to let you know.

You should download the latest version of Odin. I has the same problem, then I downloaded Odin V1.7 and it worked first time.

Hope it helps :)

P.S just make sure you disable the check box ‘Re partition’ as it seems to be checked per default on Odin 1.7.

• Satish Nayak says:

@pyrophreak..Thanks for info. I will wait for next upgrade and now i am happy with XXJVO and not planning to upgrade to this new ROM.

101. lee jeffery says:

well its been over a week since I upgraded my Galaxy S 9000 to the latest firmware. The previous gingerbread version was pretty good, quite fast (and I dont use voodoo lag) and pretty relaible. This latest version is poor in comparison. For starters it is slower and also uses more battery power. I use my phone for business pretty much the same every day. I was getting nearly 2 days out of it with the bluetooth on all day. Now i get a day and a bit.

It also comes up with “com.android.phone was forced to close due to an error” after I make a call. I found it still allows me to make calls but after the first call after I have started the phone, it messes with my Bluetooth and so I cant make calls using it at all. I didnt have this before. My bluetooth and voice dialling worked beautifully before this version. So I am going back to the previous version.

Good luck.

102. Raees says:

Up-gradation done successfully as per procedure explained.. thanks for big androidadvices. Looks like phone operation is smoother than before.

103. Ovidiu says:

Thank you guys for this wonderful tutorial.
All the process went like described.
One question that i have….is it normal after the upgrade to 2.3.4 to have the same same lockscreen like before. I mean the TouchWiz? If this is normal can you please provide a tutorial on how could we have the original android lockscreen (the one with unock and silent mode sliders)? Is this even posible?
Thanks in advance!

104. Jimmy says:

hi Neal, just a few questions, when i updated my firmware from 2.2.1 to 2.3.3 last time, i wasn’t able to get back my whatsapp messages, will this happen if i update my firmware from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 now? and also i have seen the comments from above, will this really improve the battery life for the phone? thanks!

105. Mario says:

HI Neal, thanks for your replies above…
well after i upgraded from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 i cleared the cache and hard reset the phone, after several days of usage i found the following:
amazing batterie life, smoother page flipping, fast phone…

But really terrible camera (pictures and video), it takes time to take the picture and horrible quality. and the gallery is soo lagging and slow.. other than these everything is fine..

Now Neal you asked me to clear the cache, but i already did it directly after the upgrade.. do you mean another time?
Thanks a lot..

106. lee jeffery says:

well I reloaded xxjvp and i still had the same problems. I have gone back to XXJVO which only had one slight hicciup and which to me seemed to be faster and had better battery life than all the versions so far. I await the next update to see if anything changes. I also have a 16GB S9000 coming, so cant wait to trial that and im also going to look for a 9100 whilst im in Hong Kong for the next 3 weeks. Im eager to see whats on offer there.

107. Jimmy says:

108. Mukib says:

Have upgraded successfully but the internet connection is too slow and the market stops working (May be because of the slow internet connection). It was working fine in 2.3.3 and also the internet speed was better. Thinking of going back to 2.3.3.

113. AFZAL says:

Hello Neal, I m AFZAL from Dhaka, Bangladesh. This is my 1st comment regarding ur nice and effective tutorial. I bought a Galaxy S phone with have ECLAIR 2.1 preinstalled. When I come to know about GINGERBREAD 2.3.4 then I decide to upgrade my Galaxy to Gingerbred directly from Eclair 2.1. Then I start reading many many many article or procedure from many web pages. And finally I decided to follow ur procedure. And lastly I have done it successfully.

Many many many thanx dear brother for this nice procedure. My GALAXY is now too fast with this XXJVP [Gingerbread 2.3.4] firmware. I just directly download the zip file provided by u and then un zip it with the mentioned password and make my mind strong enough to walk in ur way. Coz I have came to know from many web pages / youtube that a single problem may brick my phone. I was too nervous bcoz I never did this flash before. But as bcoz I follow ur procedure nothing happen to my phone. Phone is running now with the latest firmware from 21st June.

I flashed my phone with Odin 1.00 ver with 512 pit file. And now everything is fine. Battery life is same as before but I thing as bcoz this Firmware is latest and little bit big it consume more RAM then before.

Thanx for everything brother. Many many thanx

114. AFZAL says:

Brother I have another 2 simple Question, If u have no problem then plz ans me?

1. In Odin Soft I found “Re Partition”…. what is the function of Re Partition? If I choose Re Partition during Flash procedure then what will happen … [but as bcoz u never mention to click re partition in this XXJVP procedure so thats why I never click on Re Partition]

2. What is the Benefit of Rooting a Phone?

Plz plz plz brother if u have a little time to ans my this two simple question then plz clear me ….

Thanx once again brother

I have my GS updated with XXJVP 2.3.4 with voodoo lag fixes, can you tell me what is this app Superuser for?

118. Raees says:

Dear Neal,

You are doing a great job. i installed 2.3.4 in my i9000 and everything went fine and working also. But i feel like battery draining faster than 2.3.3. and when i tap on some menu, its taking time to open. I feel less speed. What i am thinking is to go back to 2.3.3 arabic firmware since my phone is middle east version. Please let me know whether i need to take any extra care while dowgrading 2.3.4 to 2.3.3 (arabic) version or i can simply follow procedure in 2.3.3(arabic) firmware update and do it.

119. salam says:

Thank you Neal process are all ok, unlikly this ver. 2.3.4 dos not support arabic.

• AFZAL says:

Brother this version is leaked version which released in Europe. So may be here is no Arabic support.

Hi

I have SG 2.2.1 with Voodoo lagfix. If I upgrade to 2.3.4 with these instructions, do I need to disable the lagfix first? Second question, do I have to re-install all market apps after the install? If so, what happens to already paid apps? Hopefully don’t have to re-buy them…

• Chaitanya says:

You need not purchased the app’s which you have already purchased from your account. But you will have to install the app’s again.

Hello Neal
I have GT-I9000M, does it vary from GT-I9000, I followed your instruction meticulously, but it did not work.
Now phone does not start and I get the little mobile and pc with triangle in between sign. I still can get to download mode. tried many time same results. it halts after it starts to load bin file.
thanks

• Neal Pradeep says:

yes Mo, I900M differs from I9000. don’t update on your I9000M phone as phone won’t work! just visit the service centre fro the same to get that fixed!

• Mo says:

thanks neal, but someone suggested to leave pit empty, and I did and the update went through fine all the way and the phone restarted nicely showing GT-I9000 not GT-I9000m then animated instruction to remove cover, battery, and place sim. which I did then started the phone to get a screen asking to enter network lock control key with option to dismiss. when I do dismiss I get phone setup option screen. any advice on how to proceed. I just bought this phone to days ago and I have no time to go any where I have to travel very soon

132. Mo says:

Ya neal, do you think it would be a good idea to solve the problem and improve the phone to continue and follow your instruction to clear cache and root phone with XXJVQ ?

133. Mo says:

I did it but still as it is !!!!!!

134. Mikey says:

Hi Neal!

I’ve bought a Galaxy 4 days ago and my first thing was to upgrade to 2.3.4. and root it. Everything is working allright, but when i plug in the ac charger i cant use the phone, it doesn’t respond to touch, ‘freezes’ for ~10 seconds if it responds to touch so completily useless. Charging through computer is allright with no problem. My charger is stock samsung charger not 3rd party. Since i havent tried charging the phone while on 2.1 my question is could it be that the problem is with the 2.3.4 for me? (I’ve cleared the cache and did factory reset after installation)

Thanks in advance

Please advice me on this before i flash.. thanks

During calls I cant hear anybody talking unless I turn the speaker on. Annnd now I just noticed that my phone will completely freeze sometimes when it goes idel and not let me turn the screen on or even turn the device off, I have to manually take the battery out and put it back in for me to reboot. Overall its a pretty friggen annoying pile up of problems.

Although my first try I was stuck at boot.bin as faced by same of the readers above. But don’t worry just follow the instructions as mentioned by Neal to restart the PC and then removing the battery if the phone is in download mode.

Mostly this is caused by some variant of kies running in memory.

180. Storme says:

Hey Neal

I have downloaded the new firmware but now I can’t get rid of the lock screen that I didn’t have before.

It asks me to enter a number which I have done, but I want to get rid of it. When I go to Screen Unlock Settings the “None” bar is not lite up sp I can’t disable the lock screen.

What can I do?

On whiCh firmware you are on and have you tried XXJVS 2.3.5?

• Storme says:

I have updated to 2.3.5 and this has happened. I believe it may be because I get business e-mails coming to my phone.

The phone is telling me to update my security settings if I want to receive e-mails and when I do I can’t shut off the lock screen.

This has only happened since I updated with XXJVS 2.3.5

2. I am using Plantronics bluethooth handsfree. Whenever i connects this with my phone after using it for one time it stopped working like it shows connected and paired but no sound.
