How To Update Samsung Galaxy Tab to stable Gingerbread 2.3.3 Firmware

Pre Upgrade Instructions:

1. So, first up before proceeding to update, you need to ensure that you have synced all your contacts with your Google Account, all sms, applications, videos and music files which are there in your phone should be taken a backup or else the data will be lost. Anything which is in SD card will not be lost, so you can alternatively move to SD Card.

2. Next up remove the SIM card as well as the external SD cards if any in your phone, just to make sure that in an unlikely event the data in it doesn’t get corrupted,

3. Ensure that you have kept original USB cable handy which you have got with your Galaxy Tab and also the Galaxy Tab device,

4. Additionally, ensure that your phone has at least more than 50% of battery power left, this is just an advisory which if followed then you will not experience any difficulties as while updation of the device the battery consumption is at a maximum,

5. Ensure that your computer / laptop which runs on a XP, Vista or Windows 7 OS the firewall and other antivirus programs are disabled and also you should have admin privileges to download and install the software including the drivers and also along with this you will be requiring the USB port on your computer which supports USB 2.0.

6. (Optional) Many of the Galaxy Tab users have reported the problem that they are unable to get into the download mode which is the top most necessity for updating your device, so for all those we came up with a tutorial here, just follow the given instructions and you can easily fix the download mode and also the recovery mode bug. This procedure is only for those whose devices unable to get into the download mode and the recovery mode.

7. Please note that flashing with the firmwares doesn’t mean that you are ROOTING your device. If you have flashed with Voodoo Lag fixes then too you can easily flash your device with this firmware.

8. Ensure that you have closed the KIES completely and also disable any firewalls, antivirus if any.

  2. guys pls help me..my galaxy tab is showing “firmware upgrade encountered an issue please select recovery mode in kies” and its not connecting to the pc…did any1 knows hoe to fix this pls help with it please… :(

  3. Not sure if the screen is a mcokup or not but having the on screen keyboard display when using the physical keyboard doesn’t strike me as a particularly neat solution, especially as Samsung’s hardware keyboard does away with it Hopefully the image is wrong, not the implementation

  4. I’m using galaxy tab p1000
    Firmware 2.2
    Bbv-P1000DDJM1
    Kernal version -2.6.32. 9 root@SE-S605 #2
    Build number -froyoddjm2
Can I upgrade to gingerbread 2.3? And how? Plzz help Mr. PRADEEP NEEELA. Thank you.

  5. Just to give a little more info. The Galaxy Tab if have GT-P1000R, 7″, is now SaskTel friendly, complete with phone and messaging which I did not have before the update.

I did previously use a utility from FastGSM to unlock the phone prior to the Gingerbread upgrade. IF that update is what allowed me to get the phone and messaging, then I was lucky to have run it.

Now I have a fully function 7″ tablet which I have carried with me the last three days. I like the larger screen, better for web viewing and reading but as a phone —- too big. Okay for home, okay for on the road but not to carry around.

Good thing is if I break my Samsung Galaxy S, I have a standby phone until I get it back from repairs.

Would most certainly love to try that Samsung Note … but it is not available from my cellular provider.

  6. Well I’ll be covered in butter and broiled to medium.

I downloaded ODIN 1.7 and reran the process. This time it worked.

    My GT-P1000R is now running 2.3.3, P1000XXJPZ, 2.6.35.7 kernel and GINGERBREAD.XXJQ1

Sometimes you get lucky when doing things. Just have to hit the right search words.

So there you have it, my solution – hope this helps anyone else.

  7. I think this is very bad news. I setup my GT-P1000R for download mode. I checked all the boxes but forgot to do the re-partiton one and ran the install. It failed after parm with a red square showing “FAIL”.

I then reread the instructions and clicked on the ‘re-partition’ box and ensured all others were right.

I then reran the setup and it again failed after parm with a red square showing “FAIL”.

    Now I may have pooched/bricked my GT-P1000R. All I have now it a screen showing a cell phone – ! – Computer

I have powered down, done the power up with volume down pressed but it only shows the screen with a cell phone – ! – computer.

! is a yield sign with the ! in the middle.

Is there anyway of getting out of this or is it due for shipping back to samsung?

    Any help, greatly appreciated.

  8. Hi guys,

I have read all the feedback here and I must say the procedure does work if you follow it strictly to the letter. I had a few probs as well with the initial guide as it did not contain or mention the dbdata.tar file, after getting that sorted the tab boots up beyond just the samsung logo. It will only hang at the logo if you have not flashed the dbdata file. And for those of you who say your phone doesn’t boot up after going into recovery mode and clearing the cache, my advice and I could be wrong here but this is what worked for me, is keep your phone on charge for a while and then try again, this process seems to put a drain on the battery and you will be faced with just a blank screen but if you keep the phone on charge for about half an hour and then press the power on button, you should go straight to the setup (language) options. Hope this helps, by the way thanks to the author Neal Pradeep, the new firmware looks great and I am thoroughly enjoying it.

  9. hi, i have a galaxy tab p1000..when i downloaded the bootloader and extracted it, i got a .tar file named P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJPZ_HOME its 300+ mb.. i searched for the dbdata.tar its only 1.29mb..whats the use of the P1000xxpz_home?

  10. DON’T DO IT ON THE GALAXY TAB P1010

I followed the instructions to the letter and it immediately bricked my tab. This does NOT work and will destroy the wireless only version of the tab.

This site clearly has not successfully tested these instructions on a standard version of the wireless only tablet.

I know it was attempted at my own risk, but thanks a lot for nothing….

  11. I can’t find “dbdata.tar” on the downloaded file after extracting.. will this be created after doing the steps?

  12. can this be use to upgrade an SGT from vodafone australia?
    Model: GT-P1000
    Firmware version: 2.2
    Baseband Version:P1000XXJID
    Build No:FROYO.XWJJ4

  13. I tried this for the Galaxy 7 tab GT-P1010, and it crashed completely in the recovery mode. Complete black screen, no way to reset it. Please do not try this for GT-P1010.

The file is also labeled GT-1000, not GT-P1010, that should give a clue.

Hard reset did not even work anymore……

Unless someone else was able to try this successfully on GT-P1010, pls advise users in the text above this only works for GT-P1000.

  14. Excellent updated no probs had to source two files the .pit file and the dbdata file to complete it. Thankyou.

  15. Hi Neal

I upgraded my GT-1000 to FW ver- 2.3.3 and found everything works well EXCEPT E-mail feature (exchange/hotmail).
whenever I click to open e-mail account it shows me blank screen and then a error for a part a second only.
Can you please help me resolving this.

    Thanks
    Kapil Ahuja

  16. Hello,

I am stuck!! my one is GT-P1000N

First i have used Odin v1.3…then the screen became black and still remains black but when i press an hold those Vplume up+ power key i can see the device is connected!!

the thing is…then i found this tutorial but…come on! my scrren is still black…and it is giving the strat up sound but not showing any thing

    IMMEDEATE help needed PLS!!!

      1. Hi,
A little confused. I have been reading the thread to see if I could upate my galaxy tab. On 3 Sep, you mentioned that GT-P1000N update is fine but on 13 Sep, it was mentioned that update is not meant for P1000N but only P1000 model. Will appreciate if you can clarify please? I am not very savy in these issues so wanted to be very sure before I commence upgrading firmware.

        I am using GT-P1000N,
        Firmmware is 2.2,
        baseband version P1000NUBJM2,
        Kernal version 2.6.32.9 root@SEI-27 #1

Can I update using the procedure here?

        Thanks v much.

  17. Hi,

is the firmware update 2.3.3 gingerbread for the galaxy tab 7.0 available in the Netherlands??

    thks..Leo

  18. Hi there,

Being relatively new to flashing/upgrading on the tab, i tried to update my T Mobile Tab through Kies. However when finished it still showed up as 2.2 Froyo. I followed your steps using Odin (the first part anyway) and GREAT NEWS my Tab updated first attempt and now shows and has Gingerbread!!!!

HOWEVER………………i do have 1 question if you could help? It says after the update to go do the other stuff, i.e. dbdata.tar and doing all the recovery stuff, which i would be happy to do BUT my tab is working fine without doing all that stuff. Have 3G, wifi, calling, texting, etc etc etc, is there any need to continue with all the other update stuff or am i ok to leave it as it is? Obviously don’t want to find in a few days time phone isn’t working because of something i should have done, but at the same time i was thinking if it’s not broke don’t fix it. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

And thanks very much for the info, i’m a happy chappy now i got Gingerbread!

    1. As an update to my errrrrrrrrrr…..update, ;-) i answered my own question when trying to connect my Tab to my PC and got nothing. No Kies connection, no mass storage, nothing. After doing the other 2 parts, the dbdata.tar and the recovery part all is well again, and there’s a load more apps on there too!! So if anyone reads this and has the same idea as i previously did, think again and complete all 3 steps, the last 2 took less than 5 minutes total, and gives you back full access to your Tab.

    1. Honeycomb not available for GT P1000 tabs as far as i am aware. Maybe in the pipeline, maybe not? But to the best of my knowledge it’s not available on older devices to date.

  19. and version:P1000DXJJ2
    kernel version: 2.6.32.9
    root@SE-S604#1
    build nuber:FROYO.DXJK2
would the update work? i have read the comments and i do not want to rush into things, thanks a lot for any feedback.

      1. i solved that and got through with the update. now when i try to enter factory reset it just stays sayng galaxy tab samsung on the screen

  20. my samsung galaxy showing black screen after flashing to 2.3.3 gingerbread firmware wen i try to on iits showing me only camera flash light plz any body who can help me plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  21. Works perfect . Just upgraded my GT-P1000 samsung tab to Gingerbread, without any problems & data loss.
Guess it required some patience to work with KIES.

  22. I’m getting my model fixed….
    it’s a Wi-Fi version (GT-P1010)

can this update be applied to my model?

I already bricked my Tab once…

  23. I finally has succeeded in upgrading galaxy tab to Firmware version: 2.3.3, baseband version: P1000XJPZ, kernel: 2.6.35.7, Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XXJQ1. I am truly thankful.
    phase I went through:
    1. connect the tabs to the PC (win7)
    2. turn off the tab, and switch on to download mode
    3. odin run 1.7 and activate repartition, select the file “gt-p1000_mr.pit” successed …..
    4. turn on again to Dw mode, restar odin, select “P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJPZ_HOME.tar” on the PDA field successed ………….
    5. turn on again for 3rd time, restart odin, select “dbdata.tar” (1.290kb, not 1.282kb )…………………. successed
    6. turn off the tab, then turn on the tab to recovery mode.
    7. select options Wipe data/factory reset (use vol button to navigate and hold the home button to execute)
    8. Select the options Wipe Cache Partition.
    9. last action, just select reboot the system now.
    10. The final … set the language and NEXT NEXT ….. FINISH.

    thanks Pradeep…. :)

  24. hello.
just an addition to my earlier query.

althou, i have successfully downloaded the drivers & odin, BUT i can dont download “Gingerbread 2.3.3 Firmware Bootloader Without Bootloader”. when i click the link it goes to “multiupload” website where the file “P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJPZ.zip (226.59 MB)” can not be downloaded as it has no inter-link.

    alternatively i downloaded “P1000XXJMQ ##, GT-P1000_M.PIT, Version 2.3.3 ”

what sud i do, upgrade my GT-P1000N (build number is Froyo.UBJM2, baseband version is P1000NUBJM2).

will be very grateful i someone give me a good advice.

    regards

  25. Need help.

My tab is giving hell lot of problem: suddenly it goes to black screen (with vibration) and then restarts. my model is:
GT-P1000N, present frirmware is 2.2, baseband version is P1000NUBJM2.

  27. hi …i do appreciate your site for this topic. i recently bought a samsung galaxy tab p1000 and being wanting to update it to gingerbread os….anytime i try to do it via kies, it comes up with a “current version:PDA:JJ1/PHONE:JI4 / CSC:JK3″….the version cannot be updated….i really need some advice on how to proceed

  28. hey,
i have updated my galaxy tab gt-p1000 to gingerbread. The problem is i cannot connect to the computer. When i connect it says device not recognized. What can i do.
    Thanks.

  29. Is it possible to downgrade my SGT7-P1000 from 2.3.3 back to 2.2.x ? I made the mistake of letting Kies upgrade me to Gingerbread and my Tab is now dying. It’s gone from being an athlete with Froyo to being a 108 year old man with Gingerbread. I’ve now totally given up on it, switched it off and put it away. The only way I’ll bother using it again is if I can get Gingerbread off it.

I found this link that says it’s possible with a Galaxy S-i9000, but I can’t find the corresponding SGT7-P1000 link: http://androidadvices.com/firmware-upgrade-downgrade-steps-for-galaxy-s-i9000-version/

  30. I think I bricked my Galaxy Tab with this upgrade.

    It is a GT-P1000N.

Followed the instructions to a T, but it wasn’t clear at the part “The device may take around 10 – 12 minutes for completing the process of updation of the above inputs.” I unplugged the phone from the USB cable immediately after Odin reported “PASS” and immediately proceeded towards the next step, “Now again enter the phone into the download mode which can be done by pushing the Volume down button followed by the Power ON button to enter the Tab in the download mode.”

This did not happen – my phone will not enter download mode. It won’t turn on at all.

Do you mean I have to wait 10-12 minutes AFTER the first Odin process before trying to enter it into download mode again?

Hope someone can help here, cos … I want my Tab back. It is hardly a month old :(

    1. Same problem here…i made a bad REALLY bad mistake…Somebody help us..

my tb is showing only the 4 buttons in white…and screen is still black…nothing shows up :(

  33. Hi,

The Odin program shows everything green, so it should work correctly.
But after the reboot the OS is still Froyo and the on/off button doesn’t work anymore. If i want to put it in standby it reboots.
I already tried factory reset but now this problem stays…

    Who knows what to do??

    Inge

Can you please specify what version of the Tab this is for? Since there are so many (and you don’t include a source link for your information), it would probably help your readers to mention if there are any compatibility issues. The file “gt-p1000_mr.pit” suggests this is for the GSM Tab. I have the CDMA (VZW) SCH-I800. Will this work?

  36. Hi I have a Galaxy tab 7″ 2.2 would like to update it the details are as follows please advice:

  38. Hi
I have Galaxy Tab unlocked version GT-P1000N, unlocked version…now my questions are:

    1) Are there any updates available for it like gingerbread 2.3.3 version?
    2) If i flash it with the new firmware will it remove the unlocking, i mean won’t i be able to use it with any carrier SIM after flashing?
    3) Why kies is not showimg me any update, it just says “Firmware is up to date”?

    My Tablet details are:
    PDA: P1000NVFJM2
    Phone: P1000NUBJM2
    CSC: P1000NTPAJM1

    Thanks
    Abhishek

    1. you can update with thid firmware, no it will not remove the unlocking! kies still hasn’t come with the newer version for your tab so thats the reason on why you are not getting the update notification.

  39. Hi,

and can you confirm me if i can successfully upgrade my tab or not??

  45. Hey guys

I tried yur update , and it worked. Except for the wipe data part. All I see is lines across the tab, and then it just hangs like that. When I do restart it, it goes into the tab, and everything works fine, but it I cant use the internal storage. Doesnt even give mount when connected to pc. What should I try next?

      1. No option to mount the internal memory. So I decided to redo everything. Now its stuck with all that showing on the screen a cellphone with an orange triangle with an exclamation mark and a PC. Cant get it out of that state. Also doesnt wortk unless conected to charger. WHAT HAVE I DONE?

  46. Dude! It worked pretty well..Thanks a tonn! I struggled lot with Kies before takng this risk ;-)

  47. after the last bit of the upgrade my tab reboots and i see these Errors,E:mbr checksum error.Internal mmc checksum verify failed.i do aWipe data/factory reset and Wipe Cache partition and my tab reboots to the samsung screen only.how do i fix this ? many thanks gazza

  48. cant enter into the recovery mode after upgrade everything went ok in the upgrade other than that.please help !!!

  50. So which version of the Tab is this for? Since there are so many, perhaps you should mention specifically if there are any (or no) limitations based on model. The file named “gt-p1000_mr.pit” suggests it’s for the GSM version, but I have the CDMA (VZW) version, SCH-I800. Will it work?

  51. @Braden,

I had similar problem like yours along with videos not playing. I got around the problem by using the bootloader version of the ROM above, anyway that is the recommended version in this guide. Mine went into automatic recovery mode once i flashed it with the bootloader firmware, very happy with the update now and i cant stop grinning.
    HTH
    @Mods,
In my previous post the youtube link which i had provided seems to be changed. Anyway the problem has been taken care of……….. hence it does not matter

  52. Hello,
I have followed all of the instructions above. After completion I have tried multiple times to load into recovery and I am not able to. When I try to restart my device it just sits on the Samsung Screen (First Screen, Black background with Samsung in center). I am not sure where to go from here? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  53. I’m mac user. Use Wine to open odin but I am unable to connect the device via the data cable. Any solution? thx

  54. Hi Neal,
Thank you for such a great guide.
I have updated my galaxy tab using the above guide, however i have the following problems,
    Please see this video http://www.youtube.com/advicesmedia

The tab has started showing those funny lines since the update, also when i try to play any video it comes up with the same lines and i cant see the video. Eventhough my tab goes into the download mode, it is failing to go into the recovery mode. Hence i have not been able to clean the cache or reset the device as you said in the guide.

Is it common for the tablet to do that, go into one mode and not into another?
Please advise how do i get out of this mess

  55. Missing “dbdata.tar” but easy to find it at other web site.

The instructions is good, I installed it successfully. Thanks

After installed, it keeps most of the application I installed.

Gmail and Yahoo mail needs to set up again.

Most of the applications installed has to be uninstalled and reinstall again.

  56. This isn’t working for me. I have a Sprint Galaxy Tab. I’ve gone through the process several dozen times.

When I go into the recovery options (Vol UP + Power), it tells me it can’t mount /efs. When I select “Wipe Cache”, I get the android icon with the symbol.

    Anyone else had these issues?

    1. I got the same. i was hitting the Menu button, not the Home button. The Home button is the Enter button for that screen. See if that helps. i have finished this process for the first time and it is NOT booting back up, though everything went exactly as written…just not working…

  57. When I do this and try to wipe the cache, it fails. Says it can’t mount /efs or something?

Has anyone flashed this successfully? I followed the steps several times and it appears Odin completes successfully. (It hasn’t always; sometimes, it does fail… Seems completely random.)

When I try to wipe the cache or reset the device in the boot loader screen, it goes to the Android icon with an explamation point/warning/error.

I have a Sprint Galaxy Tab, if that helps…

  58. There are still some references to the Galaxy “S”, which I think should be replaced by “Tab”.

  59. i have done this update before…it works superb improves the tab a lot and less hangs than 2.2 … and also improves the performance of the tab… by the way thnx for the guide…. it will help others…

  60. I would like to know if this upgrade will NOT WORK ON A Samsung Galaxy Tab GT – P1010?

If this works with a Galaxy GT – P1000, why would it not work on a Galaxy GT – P1010????

    Thanks

        1. Im about to upgrade my SGT from Froyo to Gingerbread. I have followed the first basic steps but im stuck caz i cant seem to find the dbdata.tar file. Instead i got dbdata.rfs file.
