How To Update Samsung Galaxy Tab to stable Gingerbread 2.3.3 Firmware

Things required before proceeding for update are listed below, so download and extract all of those in your computer. Please note that just in case if it prompts you to enter the password then enter the password as androidadvices.com:

Odin

Samsung Galaxy Tab USB Drivers 32-bit or 64-bit

Gingerbread 2.3.3 Firmware Bootloader Without Bootloader

Procedure to Update Gingerbread 2.3.3 on SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab:

  • Firs up you will have to download the bootloader or ROM without Boot loader after which you will have to extract the same on your computer. Please note that you will have to extract the Galaxy Tab root files.zip as well as other two files which will be named as gt-p1000_mr.pit as well as the dbdata.tar.
  • After extracting the contents preferably to the computer desktop, all you need to do now is to just run the Odin after which just click on the PDA button from the Odin and choose the ROM which you have downloaded and extracted the same.
  • Now, after selecting the file, you will have to be careful as the Re-Partition option should be checked or ticked.

Re Partition ticked

  • After doing this, you just need to select on the PIT and select the file named “GT-P1000_mr.pit”.
  • After this you just have to turn your SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab off and then enter into the download mode. The download mode can be entered by holding the volume down button you will have to switch ON the device as shown in the below pictured manner.
  • So, after entering in the download mode successfully you will have to connect your device to the computer with the data cable and need to make sure that the ID:COM box glows yellow which means that all the device drivers are loaded successfully and you are ready to proceed for the rest of the steps ahead.

Connected phone

  • Now, after this just click on the Start button from the Odin and then you will see that the update will be processed successfully after which you will have to disconnect the phone and close the Odin from your computer. The device may take around 10 – 12 minutes for completing the process of updation of the above inputs.
  • Now again enter the phone into the download mode which can be done by pushing the Volume down button followed by the Power ON button to enter the Tab in the download mode.

Enter into download Mode

Not sure if the screen is a mcokup or not but having the on screen keyboard display when using the physical keyboard doesn’t strike me as a particularly neat solution, especially as Samsung’s hardware keyboard does away with it Hopefully the image is wrong, not the implementation

Just to give a little more info. The Galaxy Tab if have GT-P1000R, 7″, is now SaskTel friendly, complete with phone and messaging which I did not have before the update.

I did previously use a utility from FastGSM to unlock the phone prior to the Gingerbread upgrade. IF that update is what allowed me to get the phone and messaging, then I was lucky to have run it.

Now I have a fully function 7″ tablet which I have carried with me the last three days. I like the larger screen, better for web viewing and reading but as a phone —- too big. Okay for home, okay for on the road but not to carry around.

Good thing is if I break my Samsung Galaxy S, I have a standby phone until I get it back from repairs.

Would most certainly love to try that Samsung Note … but it is not available from my cellular provider.

Well I’ll be covered in butter and broiled to medium.

I downloaded ODIN 1.7 and reran the process. This time it worked.

    My GT-P1000R is now running 2.3.3, P1000XXJPZ, 2.6.35.7 kernel and GINGERBREAD.XXJQ1

Sometimes you get lucky when doing things. Just have to hit the right search words.

So there you have it, my solution – hope this helps anyone else.

  11. Reply David Dunster February 24, 2012 at 6:31 am

I think this is very bad news. I setup my GT-P1000R for download mode. I checked all the boxes but forgot to do the re-partiton one and ran the install. It failed after parm with a red square showing “FAIL”.

I then reread the instructions and clicked on the ‘re-partition’ box and ensured all others were right.

I then reran the setup and it again failed after parm with a red square showing “FAIL”.

    Now I may have pooched/bricked my GT-P1000R. All I have now it a screen showing a cell phone – ! – Computer

I have powered down, done the power up with volume down pressed but it only shows the screen with a cell phone – ! – computer.

! is a yield sign with the ! in the middle.

Is there anyway of getting out of this or is it due for shipping back to samsung?

    Any help, greatly appreciated.

this update wasn’t meant for R Model! We will get the same at the earliest

    Hi guys,

I have read all the feedback here and I must say the procedure does work if you follow it strictly to the letter. I had a few probs as well with the initial guide as it did not contain or mention the dbdata.tar file, after getting that sorted the tab boots up beyond just the samsung logo. It will only hang at the logo if you have not flashed the dbdata file. And for those of you who say your phone doesn’t boot up after going into recovery mode and clearing the cache, my advice and I could be wrong here but this is what worked for me, is keep your phone on charge for a while and then try again, this process seems to put a drain on the battery and you will be faced with just a blank screen but if you keep the phone on charge for about half an hour and then press the power on button, you should go straight to the setup (language) options. Hope this helps, by the way thanks to the author Neal Pradeep, the new firmware looks great and I am thoroughly enjoying it.

hey lawrence, you need to strictly follow the instructions!

  14. Reply Bobby November 5, 2011 at 11:07 pm

DON’T DO IT ON THE GALAXY TAB P1010

I followed the instructions to the letter and it immediately bricked my tab. This does NOT work and will destroy the wireless only version of the tab.

This site clearly has not successfully tested these instructions on a standard version of the wireless only tablet.

I know it was attempted at my own risk, but thanks a lot for nothing….

I tried this for the Galaxy 7 tab GT-P1010, and it crashed completely in the recovery mode. Complete black screen, no way to reset it. Please do not try this for GT-P1010.

The file is also labeled GT-1000, not GT-P1010, that should give a clue.

Hard reset did not even work anymore……

Unless someone else was able to try this successfully on GT-P1010, pls advise users in the text above this only works for GT-P1000.

I am not very savy in these issues so wanted to be very sure before I commence upgrading firmware.

        I am using GT-P1000N,

    Hi there,

Being relatively new to flashing/upgrading on the tab, i tried to update my T Mobile Tab through Kies. However when finished it still showed up as 2.2 Froyo. I followed your steps using Odin (the first part anyway) and GREAT NEWS my Tab updated first attempt and now shows and has Gingerbread!!!!

HOWEVER………………i do have 1 question if you could help? It says after the update to go do the other stuff, i.e. dbdata.tar and doing all the recovery stuff, which i would be happy to do BUT my tab is working fine without doing all that stuff. Have 3G, wifi, calling, texting, etc etc etc, is there any need to continue with all the other update stuff or am i ok to leave it as it is? Obviously don’t want to find in a few days time phone isn’t working because of something i should have done, but at the same time i was thinking if it’s not broke don’t fix it. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

And thanks very much for the info, i’m a happy chappy now i got Gingerbread!

    • Reply David Bewick September 10, 2011 at 11:44 pm

As an update to my errrrrrrrrrr…..update, ;-) i answered my own question when trying to connect my Tab to my PC and got nothing. No Kies connection, no mass storage, nothing. After doing the other 2 parts, the dbdata.tar and the recovery part all is well again, and there’s a load more apps on there too!! So if anyone reads this and has the same idea as i previously did, think again and complete all 3 steps, the last 2 took less than 5 minutes total, and gives you back full access to your Tab.

Is it possible to downgrade my SGT7-P1000 from 2.3.3 back to 2.2.x ? I made the mistake of letting Kies upgrade me to Gingerbread and my Tab is now dying. It’s gone from being an athlete with Froyo to being a 108 year old man with Gingerbread. I’ve now totally given up on it, switched it off and put it away. The only way I’ll bother using it again is if I can get Gingerbread off it.

I found this link that says it’s possible with a Galaxy S-i9000, but I can’t find the corresponding SGT7-P1000 link: http://androidadvices.com/firmware-upgrade-downgrade-steps-for-galaxy-s-i9000-version/

  48. Reply Ronnie Ventura August 19, 2011 at 4:50 pm

I think I bricked my Galaxy Tab with this upgrade.

    It is a GT-P1000N.

Followed the instructions to a T, but it wasn’t clear at the part “The device may take around 10 – 12 minutes for completing the process of updation of the above inputs.” I unplugged the phone from the USB cable immediately after Odin reported “PASS” and immediately proceeded towards the next step, “Now again enter the phone into the download mode which can be done by pushing the Volume down button followed by the Power ON button to enter the Tab in the download mode.”

This did not happen – my phone will not enter download mode. It won’t turn on at all.

Do you mean I have to wait 10-12 minutes AFTER the first Odin process before trying to enter it into download mode again?

Hope someone can help here, cos … I want my Tab back. It is hardly a month old :(

as of now there is not any update and so is the reason you are unable to update but have you tried updating THE KIES version ?

    Hi,

The Odin program shows everything green, so it should work correctly.
But after the reboot the OS is still Froyo and the on/off button doesn’t work anymore. If i want to put it in standby it reboots.
I already tried factory reset but now this problem stays…

    Who knows what to do??

Can you please specify what version of the Tab this is for? Since there are so many (and you don’t include a source link for your information), it would probably help your readers to mention if there are any compatibility issues. The file “gt-p1000_mr.pit” suggests this is for the GSM Tab. I have the CDMA (VZW) SCH-I800. Will this work?

    • Reply NeaL Pradeep August 13, 2011 at 11:55 am

no it will not work! as its not for the network locked tabs as mentioned int he article!

    Hi
I have Galaxy Tab unlocked version GT-P1000N, unlocked version…now my questions are:

    1) Are there any updates available for it like gingerbread 2.3.3 version?
    2) If i flash it with the new firmware will it remove the unlocking, i mean won’t i be able to use it with any carrier SIM after flashing?
    3) Why kies is not showimg me any update, it just says “Firmware is up to date”?

    My Tablet details are:
    PDA: P1000NVFJM2
    Phone: P1000NUBJM2
    CSC: P1000NTPAJM1

    Thanks

    • Reply NeaL Pradeep August 9, 2011 at 10:05 am

you can update with thid firmware, no it will not remove the unlocking! kies still hasn’t come with the newer version for your tab so thats the reason on why you are not getting the update notification.

    Hey guys

I tried yur update , and it worked. Except for the wipe data part. All I see is lines across the tab, and then it just hangs like that. When I do restart it, it goes into the tab, and everything works fine, but it I cant use the internal storage. Doesnt even give mount when connected to pc. What should I try next?

    • Reply NeaL Pradeep July 22, 2011 at 9:03 am

You will have to go to settings to mount the sd… By default its mounted only.

      • Reply Juadien July 22, 2011 at 7:25 pm

No option to mount the internal memory. So I decided to redo everything. Now its stuck with all that showing on the screen a cellphone with an orange triangle with an exclamation mark and a PC. Cant get it out of that state. Also doesnt wortk unless conected to charger. WHAT HAVE I DONE?

So which version of the Tab is this for? Since there are so many, perhaps you should mention specifically if there are any (or no) limitations based on model. The file named “gt-p1000_mr.pit” suggests it’s for the GSM version, but I have the CDMA (VZW) version, SCH-I800. Will it work?

    @Braden,

I had similar problem like yours along with videos not playing. I got around the problem by using the bootloader version of the ROM above, anyway that is the recommended version in this guide. Mine went into automatic recovery mode once i flashed it with the bootloader firmware, very happy with the update now and i cant stop grinning.

    @Mods,
In my previous post the youtube link which i had provided seems to be changed. Anyway the problem has been taken care of……….. hence it does not matter

    Hello,
I have followed all of the instructions above. After completion I have tried multiple times to load into recovery and I am not able to. When I try to restart my device it just sits on the Samsung Screen (First Screen, Black background with Samsung in center). I am not sure where to go from here? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Neal,
Thank you for such a great guide.
I have updated my galaxy tab using the above guide, however i have the following problems,
    Please see this video http://www.youtube.com/advicesmedia

The tab has started showing those funny lines since the update, also when i try to play any video it comes up with the same lines and i cant see the video. Eventhough my tab goes into the download mode, it is failing to go into the recovery mode. Hence i have not been able to clean the cache or reset the device as you said in the guide.

Is it common for the tablet to do that, go into one mode and not into another?
Please advise how do i get out of this mess

  78. Reply Dennis June 20, 2011 at 5:37 pm

Missing “dbdata.tar” but easy to find it at other web site.

The instructions is good, I installed it successfully. Thanks

After installed, it keeps most of the application I installed.

Gmail and Yahoo mail needs to set up again.

Most of the applications installed has to be uninstalled and reinstall again.

This isn’t working for me. I have a Sprint Galaxy Tab. I’ve gone through the process several dozen times.

When I go into the recovery options (Vol UP + Power), it tells me it can’t mount /efs. When I select “Wipe Cache”, I get the android icon with the symbol.

    Anyone else had these issues?

    • Reply Kirk July 6, 2011 at 8:15 am

I got the same. i was hitting the Menu button, not the Home button. The Home button is the Enter button for that screen. See if that helps. i have finished this process for the first time and it is NOT booting back up, though everything went exactly as written…just not working…

  84. Reply Ali Can June 15, 2011 at 7:50 pm

By googling for “Galaxy Tab root files.zip”, you can find the missing files.

  85. Reply Eric June 15, 2011 at 6:33 pm

When I do this and try to wipe the cache, it fails. Says it can’t mount /efs or something?

Has anyone flashed this successfully? I followed the steps several times and it appears Odin completes successfully. (It hasn’t always; sometimes, it does fail… Seems completely random.)

When I try to wipe the cache or reset the device in the boot loader screen, it goes to the Android icon with an explamation point/warning/error.

I have a Sprint Galaxy Tab, if that helps…
