JioMusic Vs Gaana Vs Wynk Vs Apple Music Vs Google Play Music – Which is the best Music App?

Over the past few years, Music streaming in India has become one of the hottest digital categories. All thanks to the shutdown of most popular torrent websites and also thanks to shifting in consumer mindset to opt for listening music via legal sources like JioMusic, Gaana, Wynk, Saavn and Apple Music.

With almost over a Billion people already connected with the mobile services in India with an average internet usage of 6.5GB/1.28GB/1.29GB/1.32GB on Jio/Airtel/Vodafone/Idea operators per month. There is a huge surge seen in digital services consumption and from which music streaming has a considerable share.

With the introduction of Free services by Reliance Jio, many 1st time Internet users have joined the club of internet and majority of this audience has chosen to go with online music streaming services. Gaana comes with the decent interface with great animation but lacks in content packaging and numerous ads further deteriorate the experience. Apart from Hindi and English, content packaging is not that great as it lacks most of the widely used categories. Key Features:
Apart from simple to use interface, JioMusic also comes with brilliant content curation among all other music apps and that too in over 15 Languages. Apart from just providing free music streaming and offline downloads, this app also comes with JioTune feature. With JioTune, Jio customer can set/ change caller tune unlimited times without any charges. This app also has the least app size among all music apps. Wynk Music claims to have just over 3 Million songs from over 12 Languages. Wynk has announced its services from Sep. 2014 and has over 10 Million app downloads and ranks as No.2 Music app just after JioMusic app in Free Music apps category.

Key Features:
Wynk Music comes with a clean look just like JioMusic which also allows local music playback from this player and is one of the USP of this app. This app comes with free limited streaming and also offers the feature of Caller Tune where it allows Airtel users to set their favorite song as Hello Tune. This app lacks content from some labels and that’s for sure as most of the popular songs are not available on this platform. Other key features are;

Cons:
++ Large App Size and Highest Battery Consumption
++ Complex Pricing Structure
++ User experience in Web is lousy

Apple Music:
Apple Music which claims to be the leader in the world of music streaming post-Spotify seems like the worst of the lot especially in India. Just yesterday, Apple Music has rolled out an update which comes with the improved design, improved performance and Lyrics feature for limited songs. Apple Music offers best of the recommendation services and design experience but that’s where the good things end and it doesn’t solve the purpose of being a music app. Apple Music claims to have over 40 Million songs, but most of the Indian relevant content can’t be found in the app.

This app lacks content curation for regional and Bollywood content and fails to provide enough options for on-demand music listening. The reason of Rdio being shut in India is due to lack of on-demand music options. Except for the brand which comes from, Apple Music app in India is a complete fail and that’s why it’s not even there in Top 500 Android apps.

Key Features:
In Apple Music, Beats 1 radio is the best among all music apps in India but only offers this for International Content. This app comes with the neat UI but lacks the placement of most popular and trending content upfront as most of them can only be found post using the search feature. The only star feature is the Lyrics feature in this app and apart from this other features are;
++ Offline Downloads in 5 devices,
++ High Quality HD Music with 320Kbps

Availability, Subscription & App Rating:
Apple Music is a paid app which offers free 3 months trial and is available in Android, IOS and on the web via iTunes.
When it comes to rating, Apple Music is worst of the lot as it just earns 3.4/5 Stars and nowhere ranks in the Top 500 Android apps.

Cons:
++ Highest App Size
++ Lacks popular songs and music from many labels

Google Play Music:
Google Play Music has finally launched its Streaming service in India. With an initial trial period of 14 days, subscription can be then renewed for Rs. 89/ month. With over 40 Million songs, offering looks promising as of now. While app has agreements with almost all the labels except few like Aditya Music which is one of the biggest labels in South India. App has the biggest problem of content discoverability as Indian consumers look out for New Releases and Trending section the most which is missing from this app.
This app lacks content curation for regional and Bollywood content and fails to provide enough options for on-demand music listening. When it comes to Google Play Music, its mostly popular of being playing side loaded music and not the streaming service.

Key Features:
In Google Play Music, International curation is very good and also overall app design is simple. This app comes with the neat UI but lacks the placement of most popular and trending content upfront as most of them can only be found post using the search feature. Some of the main features of this new offering from Google Play Music are;
++ Offline Downloads in 5 devices,
++ High Quality HD Music with 320Kbps
++ Allows users to upload upto 50K songs
++ Ad-Free radio with unlimited skips

Availability, Subscription & App Rating:
Google Play Music is a paid app which offers free 14 days trial and is available in Android and iOS platforms.
