HTC One M9 Hands-on – A Subtle Upgrade from One M8

HTC has officially unveiled the HTC One M9 Smartphone. It was one of most anticipated phone of the MWC 2015 along with the Samsung Galaxy s6.


The One M9 features a 5″ display with 1080p resolution. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, a 64 bit SOC, with an Octa core 2.0 GHz CPU and Adreno 430 GPU, 3GB of RAM. The phone comes with 2840 mAh battery.

On camera front, it feature a 20.7MP rear camera and 4MP UltraPixel rear camera with an f/2.0
ultra-wide lens and enhanced low-light performance. It runs on Android 5.0.2 lollipop with Sense 7 UI on top. Sense 7.0 comes with themes you can create with one click and a personalised app launcher widget as well as new lock screen widgets.

Hardware & Design

The One M9 has a metal unibody design. It measures 144.6 x 69.7 x 9.61 mm, compared to 146.4 x 70.6 x 9.4 mm on the One M8. It weighs 157g as compared to One M8’s 160g. While The shape of the M9 will look a bit identical to the M8, there are a few very notable changes. The M9 comes with sharper edges that make it easier to grip. The front frame is surrounded by an edge, tracing its entire outline. On front, you will get ultra pixel front camera, few sensors, capacitive touch keys, and boomSound speaker grill. At the bottom, you will get micro USB port.

At the right side is on/off switch, volume rocker and micro sd card slot. At the top is the IR blaster. On left side, you get sim card slot. On the back, we get 20.7 Camera, dual LED flash and HTC logo.

HTC moved from it UltraPixel rear camera to a 20 megapixel single lens.The rear camera setup has switched from a circular shape to a square shape, with sapphire glass protecting the lens.The camera lack the optical image stabilization (OIS) feature.

The HTC One M9 is not water resistant, but HTC is releasing an Active case with IP68 rating and drop-resistant protection.The HTC One M9 doesn’t have wireless charging due to the full metal casing.

The One M9 will be available in several colour options including Silver model with Rose Gold frame, a Gun Metal Gray one, a completely Gold version and a Pink model with Gold frame.


HTC One M9 runs on HTC Sense 7 UI based on lollipop. Sense 7 looks and feels a lot like its previous iteration Sense 6. It has the same overall color and font scheme. Icons look clearer and the drop-down quick settings has been improved.

Now you also get Personalize widget in which you will get home, out and work mode. On selecting a particular mode, you will only see those apps added in that particular mode on your home screen. HTC have removed HTC smart remote app and replaced it with peel smart remote. You will also get a suggestion folder, where you will get app suggestions from HTC depending on what you’re doing and where you are. With M9, you will also get 100 GB Google drive space. The One M9 also features a theme section.

There is also a themer app in the phone.The new app will use your own clicked pictures or a wallpaper you’ve downloaded and generate a theme based on that picture.

First Impressions

The M9 smartphone comes with great specs and features, but there are not any groundbreaking changes in the design. This was our quick hands-on, we will come with a detailed review shortly.

The HTC One M9 will launch in March in the U.S., and it will be available from Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and U.S. Cellular, as well as from popular retailers such as Best Buy and Amazon.
