The tool which we will be using is the Superboot for Huawei U8800 (Huawei Ideos X5). Basically what this whole process of rooting will do is it not only will open up the device for faster performance but also it will boost the overall speed which can be measured in terms of the Quadrant Ranks as well. In the process of rooting the device, it will also convert the overall file system of the Android smart phone Ideos X5 from the laggy EXT 3 to the speedy EXT 4which is a big respite for the performance hungers as this will increase the speed of the device than before.

Keeping in mind about the convenience as well as the safety of your device, we have listed down the step by step instructions which include the Pre requisites of rooting and then followed by the instructions to root Huawei U8800 or the Huawei Ideos X5 Phone successfully.

Note: Please note that you will have to reconfigure the APN settings after updating the firmware to access the data services and the Internet services as all the Internet APN settings will be reset. You will have to contact your Service provider to get more info on the APN Settings or alternatively you too can make a note of it. Not to forget also configure the MMS Settings or take down the MMS Settings as this too will need to be re configured after the rooting process. Also, we take no responsibility if you download the files and apply the below procedure to root your phone.

Pre Root Instructions:

  • Warranty will get void once you root Huawei Device, though warranty can be claimed once you un root your device.
  • In an unlikely event you may lose all the data which is present in your Huawei Ideos X5, so it’s recommended to create a backup of all the data like call log, messages, applications, music, videos and other data which is present in the phone, so that you can restore the same once the rooting process is completed.
  • It’s very important to maintain a minimum battery power of 50% so as to facilitate the smoother rooting process or else there is a high possibility that your device may end up turning completely off in the process of rooting.
  • Since the process of rooting will be taking place, all the APN settings with which you access the Internet will be wiped off completely, so ensure that you have noted all the required settings for accessing the internet so that you can configure them again back once the device gets rooted.
  • Last but not the least follow the below mentioned instructions carefully so as to save your phone from being turned into an expensive paper weight.

Unboxed X5 with 2.2.1 on it; was able to root with z4root and made a backup of the system.
Then (perhaps foolishly) I followed Huawei’s instructions for installing THEIR 2.3.5 image (copied large file to /dload/UPDATE.APP in the SD card, then reboot to recovery mode.
Now I have a happily working 2.3.5 but when on the pink recovery-mode screen it no longer shares its recovery files over USB so rooting isn’t working.

Does anybody know of a way to re-root after installing the manufacturer’s gingerbread update?

  • lovetide

this .img does NOT work for 2.3.5 for me too… and yes, it keep rebooting

    • NeaL Pradeep

      please follow the instructions!

      • Ps3udo

It definitively doesnt work with 2.3.5!

  • Muhannad

Would this root the new version of firmware for u8800 android 2.3.5?
I tried to do so , but it reboots multiple times and still booting ,what should I have to do?

    • NeaL Pradeep

YES IT WILL WORK FOR 2.3.5 VERSION! is it a locked phone?

  • JT

I tried twice and ended up to the blue screen. Then i renamed the \boot.u8800-modaco-superboot-r1.img\ file to \boot.img\ and no more bluescreen. Think it will work, now waiting for the phone to boot up.

    • NeaL Pradeep

try removing the battery and then try to boot the phone normally!

  • Cr

I rooted my phone as you said but……….same prob came with cam. upside down and with res of cam too. then I rooted my phone and now OC @ 1 GHZ plus using CM 7.1 (2.3.7) installed 200 softs .. working like butter :)

  • lbjdutch

my phone screen turned into blue after i turned it on after replacing boot.img. any problem?

  • Daniel

    Hi there,

I have attempted to root as instructed above but when i reboot the phone it shows the ideos startup screen then goes straight to a blue screen and does not change from there. There is a recovery disc image file in the image folder as well, could this be causing any problems?

    Thank you for your time.

    • style

  • Popipo

How much time should the rooting process take after i turn the phone on again?

So I did everything like you wrote and the phone works just fine, exept for the camera wich is upside down, as you said above, I should try resseting my phone, however i’m just to noob to find out how to reset it. If you could tell me how to i’d appreciate it (:
And, do I lose my apps and data if I restart it?

    • NeaL Pradeep

  • Johnny

Uhhh… my phone is in DOWNLOAD mode (with the purple screen) and my computer can’t install drivers which means I can’t get into the phone. What have I done wrong?

  • mark cezar dulay

this is really helpful ‘coz i’m new with “rooting” the device.however, i have some questions: 1.)do we have to replace the origina boot image with the downloaded image; 2.) do we have to put the phone to “debugging” mode before we proceed with the rooting?. i have found a similar procedure in another site(your instructions are more specific though) and after following the procedure, after re-starting my device,it just turned into blue screen.luckily i change it back to the previous boot image and was able to re-start it again.however, it was not rooted.please tell me what am i doing wrong.thanks.

    • NeaL Pradeep

yes you need to replace the original boot.image file!@\

  • papas

After rooting the device doing all the steps in this tutorial, I have 2 issues.

The first one, that is not exactly an issue, is that the APNs were not reset, so I am not sure whether the upgraid succeeded.

the other one is that now the device drains the battery twice as fast as the previous version, and the handset is getting a bit warm!

Please also tell me if I can unroot the phone (back to previous stage) just by replacing the image I kept (I made a backup of the boot.img before rooting)

    Thank you in advance!

  • Gugi

Hi, I’ve rooted my X5 by doing steps found in this article. The problem is that my camera is now turned up side down. How do I fix this.
