Samsung Captivate i897 – Steps to Install Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0.3 Firmware

Procedure to update Samsung Captivate i897 with Android 4.0 ICS:

  • Download the ICS Android 4.0 Package for Samsung Captivate i897 in your computer and then connect your device to the computer using the USB cable which you got at the time of purchase.
  • After this, copy the downloaded ICS Android 4.0 Zip File package to your device’s SD Card. Once you finish copying, disconnect the phone from the computer and then turn Off the phone so as to enter into the recovery mode.
  • The recovery mode can be entered by pressing  Volume UP Key + OK button, and holding both simultaneously press the Power Button. Please note that just in case if the device boots up in the normal mode, you need to again try entering into the recovery mode.
  • After this, you need to select “install zip from sd card” > “choose zip from sd card” and then choose the ICS Zip file which you have placed in your phone.
  • As soon as you select the file, it will take around 10 minutes to apply the update. Once the update is applied successfully, you will again land up to the recovery mode. After this, select “++++ Go Back ++++” > “reboot system now” so that the device is re booted successfully.

Congratulations!, you are now on the latest firmware of ICS Android 4.0 version. Do let us know just in case if you face any issues in the comments as we will try to fix the same at the earliest.

I’ve flashed my captivate and it worked very mine once rooted of course.

Now I’ve just one bug but of huge concern: the cut and paste with the contextual menu doesn’t work!
The symbol does appear but no icons to cut, copy or past.

Just Download the Speedmod kernel and flash it via ODIN and reboot in recovery after it loads
and now u will be in a modded 3e recovery with signatures disabled

For those that are getting the signature verification failed message, make sure you toggle signature verification off. I had this problem with a previous ROM and my phone WAS rooted. Toggling it fixed it.

This ROM works perfectly on my Captivate. No problems to report yet.

      March 2, 2012 at 4:53 pm

flash to stock first. Then flash the new ROM on top via clockwork. If your a Rogers customer running the latest stock ROM you will have alot of trouble. There its something in that ROM that screws with clockwork. You may even need a jig to get into download mode before flashing back to stock 2.1 which is where you want to be before flashing any new roms until Rogers fixes it, which they will not do. It gets a little more complicated after that. You will likely have problems. You are rooted! The problem isn’t your root or super user. Its the ROM no matter what anybody else says you are rooted or you wouldn’t be running whatever custom ROM your running now. Root doesn’t just fall out of your damn phone. Its not an iPhone.

Before anyone does this they need to go to the official android developer page from where this guide was created. The people here do not know what they’re doing.

If you are going to provide the .zip file for this port, then please at least point everyone to the website where it is actually being developed. To everyone with questions, please go to the link below. This is the managed forum with actual developers that are working on this port. They also list all of the known bugs/issues/etc. They also don’t use all caps when answering questions. This page is just a regurgitation of the information from the original thread.

I don’t know why exactly – maybe something to do with installing multiple ROMs and recovering back to CM7 (with a flaw* now) and re-kernalling etc. then even trying to re-ROM CM7 – which it wouldn’t allow anymore – but now even the tethering works – with a little fuss – having to go back to the carrier page and re-checking enable data – then back to the wifi tether page and re-checking etc. – but it all works now. Funny though – I can’t get back to CM7 on recover without a google talk *unable to authorize flaw – and I can’t figure it out. I never signed on to google talk. Dang thing. But anyway – I got ICS now and it all works. Thanks for that.

I have a set of questions:
    – in case we installed Voodoo lagfix (ext4 file conversion) do we have to revert back to original file system before updating?
    – Does this ROM contains swype?
    – can you still switch from one language to another during message composition?
    – do you have a list of non functional subsystems? (eg. camera, music, email, wifi, 3g)..

Same thing always happens to me just go to clockwork mod rom manger, make sure it says you have the latest clockwork mod recovery at the top, choose “boot into recovery,” recovery 3e will be there, choose what I believe is the first option something like “install update packages” next thing you know you’ll be in clockwork mod recovery and you won’t see the 3e anymore after that.

My mobile data quit working and I had to contact AT&T and they just had to re-register my phone. No big deal. Phone is super amazingly fast, and there does not seem to be any of the afformentioned lag. Love the lock screen and Notification tones, and the H+ capabilities!
