Samsung Galaxy Captivate I896 – Steps to Update with ICS Android 4.0.3 Firmware

Samsung Captivate LogoSamsung might just get Complex with this article as just recently we got hear that its now starting to push the Official Gingerbread 2.3 update for all its users but all thanks to the third party developers who take efforts in making the custom ROMs inspired by Ice Cream Sandwich. Just recently we said that an all new Official version of Gingerbread is pushed by Samsung to all the devices of Galaxy I896. Please note that this firmware of ICS is still under the beta version and not an official version yet. Unfortunately Samsung won’t be coming up with an official version of Android 4.0 firmware due to hardware limitations and Touch Wiz. Please note that this firmware which we will be looking is dubbed as Android 4.0.3 Firmware and is 2.1RC

Disclaimer: Please note that this process of firmware update is not recommended for the basic users and is only recommended for the advanced users. Also, we should not be held responsible for any damage happened to your device in any manner after applying this update. This firmware can be applied on both the devices that is on i897/i896 models.

So before proceeding to the procedure with which you can update the device, you first need to go through the list of pre requisites which you need to follow and then we will check out the procedure in the next page.

Essential Pre Requisites:

  • All the data in your Galaxy Captivate I896 device needs to be backed up by following the below mentioned tips so as to ensure that  just in case if any data gets lost or corrupted then the same can be restored.

Text messages – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Phone Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log – Call Log and Restore
Pictures, Music, Videos, Files etc.– Copy to internal / External SD Card,
Internet & MMS Settings – Backup all the settings from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names

Notes – Manually you need to note down or need to transfer to Evernote.

  • Now, ensure that the device is left with the minimum of 60% battery charge so as to ensure that the phone doesn’t get turned Off in the middle of firmware update. Disable all the Antivirus / firewall suites in your computer as these tools tend to interrupt the process of firmware update. Also, close the KIES completely in your computer.

Special Instructions to users on Custom ROM:

  • Just in case if you are any of the custom ROMs then you need to enter into the recovery mode first and need to select “Wipe data/factory reset”, “Wipe Cache partition” and after this you need to also select “reboot system” so as to restart the phone. Additionally, you also need to clear the Dalvik cache from the recovery mode from the “advanced” option.
  • Assuming that you have followed all the above mentioned instructions, it’s now time to proceed to next page where we have mentioned the procedure.
