Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100 – Steps to Update with Official Indian ICS 4.0.3 Firmware

Galaxy S2 LogoYour wait comes to an End as very soon Indian users of SAMSUNG Galaxy S2 GT I9100 smartphone users will be witnessing the official Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 firmware via KIES. But we managed to get hold of this firmware which will be pushed via KIES. So just in case if you are on any of the beta firmwares or say on the custom ROM firmwares, then you will not be getting the update via KIES as it doesn’t recognize the device on the beta or custom ROM firmwares. The only way with which you can apply the update is manually which we will be discussing in the due course of this article. Please note that this article should not be applied by the users of I9100G Galaxy S2 smartphones. We will keep I9100G users posted once update arrives on AndroidAdvices.

Disclaimer: Neither we, nor developer should be held responsible for any damage happened to your device in the process of following the instructions mentioned in this article. It’s very unlikely that there will be any issues but just in case if at all there are any issues then we are committed to help you in solving the same.

Rooting Information:

  • Just in case if your device is rooted, after applying this firmware the rooting access will be revoked.
  • Applying this firmware doesn’t require your Galaxy S2 to be pre rooted, even the non-rooted phones can be applied with this firmware.
  • Very soon, immediately after this article we will be coming up with an article which will help you to root your Galaxy S2 on XXLPQ firmware.

Pre Requisites:

  • We recommend you to back up all the data present in your device with the help of below mentioned steps. Don’t use KIES to back up the data as it will not support the phone after this update since it’s a custom ROM firmware.

SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log - Call Log and Restore
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names

  • Minimum charge left in the phone should be 80% so as to ensure that the phone doesn’t get turned Off in the middle of firmware update. (If you don’t follow this step then the chances are more that your phone may get DEAD for which we should not be responsible).
  • Disable all the security suites installed in your computer and uninstall all antivirus tools in your computer so as to ensure that the firmware update is not interrupted in the middle of the process.
  • Enable the USB debugging in your phone from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”. The USB Debugging option should be ticked. USB Debugging Mode can only be enabled once you disconnect the phone from computer. USB Debugging should be ticked.

USB Debugging

So assuming that you are done with all the above mentioned instructions, you can now proceed to the next page where we have summed up detailed instructions on how to apply this official leaked firmware of ICS 4.0.3 in your Galaxy S2 GT I9100.

    Hi

Is there a newer update? I have installed this and also the KIES version. Have done clean install by formatting USB and internal storage. Also wiped Cache and reset to factory setting before updating to iCS.

    Pros:
    1. Slick interface. Nice features such as widgets/ icons for system settings on home screen.
    2. Support of Chrome Browser.
    3. Managing phone with ICS is more intuitive. E.g. better notification system, task manager, etc.

    Cons:

    1. Reduces Battery life
    2. Opening contacts or phone has small delay / lag of few seconds.
    3. Phone heats up periodically and hangs. Only option is to remove battery and reboot.
    4. Pink Spot with camera has been reintroduced. Seems Software team forgot about this camera bug which was fixed in gingerbread.

Does any one know when Samsung plans to release newer ICS firmware.

    I recommend ics 4.0.3

Updated my Samsung galaxy s2 i9100g version yesterday.

    1. Memory size reduced from 1 GB to around 750mb
    2. The mobile is responding sluggish especially when trying to unlock. Home page takes few second to appear
    3. Face unlock not worth using it, crappy

User interface is slick but if Samsung does not correct the performance soon and the missing memory problem, it would really make users want to go back to previous ginger bread version of Android.

if you have updated manually via Odin , it wont give you update to official update .
you have to downgrade 1st to 2.3.6 and then update it to 4.0.3 through kies .
i followed same step it worked .

I am observing a strange issue. I updated to 4.0.3 and post that everytime I SMS someone, there are 2 messages that are sent when I use the default message application.
    1. I used Chomp SMS app and the issue vanishes.
    2. I want to use the Default Messaging App only :(

Is there a way to roll back to 2.3.6. I never had that issue with 2.3.6

Please give me the link for rollback ASAP. Thanks

updated to ICS yesterday. So far so good. Fone is now faster and smoother and working like a charm :-D
    Thanx for the tutorial.
Just 1 advice for new users.
    1. kindly follow the steps as above.
    2. if u get stuck/freeze at any point, don’t get panic. ( you will not brick your phone.) Just re insert the battery and connect the USB cable to good / less used USB port. If problem continues change the USB CABLE.
(in my case i got stucked like Ajay said on april 24. it hung At factoryfs.img. i just re inserted the battery changed the USB port to the 1 at the back side of my CPU. Switched on the fone and restarted the whole process. and I was done in about 4-5 minites :-D)

    Hi Pradeep,
I think i got back to 2.3.6 from your page itself. I don’t quite remember it now. But i downloaded the official 2.3.6 version of yours. And Kies now says, the latest firmware is xx xx xx and my firmware is xx xx xx. This means, Kies is recognizing my device, isn’t it?
I believe, so far, there is no update of ICS here.

The md5 filename does not match the file that I’ve obtained on extraction of the zip file that you have asked us to download. I have followed all the steps that you have given and I continue to have 2.3.3 … Could this md5 file discrepancy be a reason?

I have installed this firmware. First the positives :
    1. It is generally fast.
2.Bluetooth pairing with my Nokia Stereo headset is stable and does not hang as much as before in 2.3.4.
    3. ICS improvements are good overall.

    Some negatives :
    1. Takes longer to charge fully. Also battery drains faster.
    2. Contacts and Phone Logs seem to freeze momentarily when launched firs time. If immediately relaunched it is fast. Seems to be offloaded from memory periodically.
    3. Phone crashes / hangs once in a while. Need to remove battery to get it working agan. Seems to overheat due to whcih it shuts done. Not sure why this is happening.

    1. The twlauncher is continuously crashing. I rooted my phone too after installing the ICS, worked fine for a few hours, and then suddenly the home screen started hanging and saying twlauncher stopped working.

    2. The app clubbing option on the homescreen. Considered to be inherent in ICS is not present in this build.

Any help would be appreciated. Good work though. Also I would like to tell u that my phone was on 30% charge and it completed properly and I did not have to backup or restore.

More importantly while downloading via Odin on the top right corner of the screen of the mobile u can see that this is an official f/w and not a custom f/w. It says custom f/w=no and official f/w=yes

    Hi,

About 12 hours ago, i made a post in one of the threads on this webpage and it still is awaiting moderation. I posted that thread before flashing my ROM, which i did after 1 hour of such posting.

I have these stats shown under “About Phone”

    Android Version – 4.0.3
    Baseband Version – I9100DDLP8
    Kernel Version – 3.0.15-I9100XXLPQ-CL223505se.infra@SEP-94#3
    Build number – IML74K.XXLPQ

Now, ICS 4.0.3 appears somewhat slow for me and I ended up with a big question. Been browsing since then to get back to STOCK FIRMWARE. I have few questions and a help would be highly appreciated.
(Note: All the features in ICS working fine, but i noticed delay and also the flashing was successful).

1st – Were the above stats under “About Phone” perfect for the official ICS Indian firmware?

2nd – How to get back to my old Gingerbread 2.3.3 or 2.3.6?

3rd – Haven’t come across any active links for download of either of the versions mentioned above for the sim free Indian galaxy s2? Any help would be commendable

4th – Once i found any link for the official 2.3.3 or 2.3.6 Indian version of gingerbread, do I have to flash it in the same manner like i did when flashing with 4.0.3 ROM using ODIN?

    Regards

      Hello Kamesh!
Now if you want to get back to GB 2.3.6 from ICS 4.0.3.

Do this is your own responsibility

      I have already done that.

You just need to do the following setps:-

Getting upgraded to ICS is ok, but can you come out with some article or you can post here itself with the major differences between gingerbread and ICS. Also the advantages of ICS over gingerbread.

I guess most of the people upgrading the firmware without actually knowing the benefits and then struggle.

    Thanks for your time.

    i have a samsung galaxy s2 gt i9100, which i bought from delhi/ncr in june 2011.
i really wait for the ics update, but i am a bit skeptical of applying leaked firmwares.
this one, for instance, is a leaked official firmware, as far as i know.
i have some questions and doubts regarding this firmware-
is this an official one, i mean, will it void my warranty or not recognized by samsung keis?
are there any bugs or problems, as most leaked firmwares have some kind of bugs in one form or the other, like sometimes the video camera or any other feature is not working properly.
will all my current apps be compatible with this?
how is the battery life? i am a bit of a power user, and i bought a swisscharger gpower to provide extra battery life for my cellphone.

PS- also i have a problem – i updated my sgs2 to official gingerbread 2.3.6 XWKL1 through keis in december 2011, and rooted it back in febrouary. i was very satisfied with the battery life as it gave me 8-12 hours of normal usage (including 3G browsing, music and heavy email) with power-savings turned off WITHOUT the external battery i mentioned before.
but now, since about 2-3 weeks, my phone’s battery life has deteriorated and it sucks battery like water. i have to use power saving to save every drop of battery, and by the end of the day, only around 35% remains, without any heavy usage like browsing, and just by listening to music via earphones (i plug my phone out of the charger at around 7 AM every day at 100%, and get back from school at around 5 PM).
please tell me how can i solve this problem.

Note – I have rooted my phone, and i used the battery calibiration app available on the play store, after using which my battery life increased significantly

Followed the instructions. After flashing with Odin, teh phone rebooted and waited on the boot screen for around 4-5 minutes, after which it went to “Updating Android” screen. After this it smoothly booted and then Updated the applications on the phone and till now running absolutely fine.

Only one point, I did not have to Wipe data/Reset to factory defaults or Wipe cache. I guess, thats my the phone retained all apps and data impeccably.

    Thanks a ton.

    • Reply Amit Bhawani April 3, 2012 at 8:51 am

But thats suggested to be done because it would make your phone perform faster.

      • Reply Sabyasachi April 3, 2012 at 2:13 pm

        So which one’s mandatory then?
Will a wipe cache help the phone to perform better?

I don’t want to do a wipe data, as that calls for a entire restoration of data.

If I only do a wipe cache, will that help anyhow? After a wipe cache will I lose anything?

Hi, Neela! Proud to comment on one of the few Indian ICS Forums as of now. Now, If I install this update, would KIES let me know whenever ICS gets pushed by it. I mean this is the latest version, 4.0.3. So, I think, KIES would always say like, ‘No updates found’, even if ICS is pushed by it because I already have the latest version. I’ll be thankful to you if you try clearing my doubt!

Its just LP7 firmware. Nepal/Srilanka/Bangladesh. Just CSC changed by yourself of someone, Samsung gonna makes changes for India and will be released middle of April. so please say its Beta or CSC changed version. why Simply saying users. its Official. Official.. if you are honest!.?

3.) Can I apply the European ICS update on my Indian GS2 I9100? If so, are there any advantages/disadvantages?

4.) I prefer to update the European ICS build as I guess that future Samsung updates will also be pushed first to European countries; and the European ICS build will be able to receive those updates earlier than Indian ICS build. Is this logic/assumption right?

    However i had few doubts:
    1. In music application, the 5.1 channel is not working properly(Lot of disturbance).

    Hi Pradeep,
Thanks for the update. I downloaded and installed ICS from this site. It is working smooth.
Moreover i am facing few problems:
    1. The contact picture is not displayed sometimes
    2. In the Music, 5.1 channel option is not working properly (Lot of disturbance). Could you please check on this.
    3. And the initial RAM memory itself is around 350Mb. Is it natural or abnormal.

Other than this. I love the udpate. its superb. Thanks for that.

I’m sad. Like Gingerbread 2.3.6, this ICS upgrade for India still lacks full and proper support for Devanagari. For example the Hrasva Ikaars and Jodaakshars are not being rendered correctly. I hope the Samsung team gets this feedback and acts quickly on it.

    1. I am from Portugal can i get this firmware or is it just for India?

    2. Can I just follow this tut and get an official ICS running on my sgs2? Is there a problem since I have a custom ROM installed?

Everything went OK, except after PASS, the phone rebooted itself and upgraded apps, then media database, so I did not go to Recovery mode. Moreover, I did not backup my media files. While upgrading media database, just one error cropped up:”Unfortunately Java has stopped”. Do I still need recovery mode? Backing up my media files would take a very very long time, so if recovery mode not required, then can I skip it?
