Pricing Comparison

First off, this is one of the main factors one takes into consideration. HTC has always tried to have a good hold on the mid-range smartphone sales, and has kept the pricing better than the other brands, but here, both the phones are exactly same in price. If you spend £379 for SIM free handset, then you have to look below for the specs and features of both the devices before deciding to purchase one based on that.

Design and Build

As you know screen size of both the smartphones are extremely same. The Samsung Galaxy S4 mini is smaller than HTC One mini in size and lighter in weight. The difference is quite small. As per the name, the HTC One mini is only 7% narrower and 4% shorter than the HTC One and is nearly 15% lighter than the HTC One.

HTC One mini has got the Aluminum unibody and a polycarbonate band around the edges. But the difference is Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini has the plastic casing as per the full size of S4. This is the key difference between them, and when talking about the actual design, the HTC One Mini is way better than the S4 Mini, which does look like the countless number of similar Galaxy devices already available from Samsung.

Significantly HTC One mini is higher than the Galaxy S4 mini’s pixel density of 256ppi, because of the resolution which is the qHD one with 540p display in Samsung’s case.

The actual display looks not much different when comparing both, because the Super AMOLED display of the S4 Mini does a good job although Samsung didn’t care much about the resolution.

Finally a factor where the Samsung beats HTC, and this is one has to be well considered, because the HTC One mini has less power than the Galaxy S4 mini. Although both the HTC One mini and Samsung Galaxy S4 mini have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 dual-core processor, the clocking speed is different, and the RAM provided in the S4 Mini is 1.5GB, compared to the 1GB in HTC One Mini, which takes a step ahead when we talk about multitasking.

Camera Comparison

For both the HTC models, the rear camera is of 4MP with the new “Ultrapixel” camera. HTC has also included “Zoes”, i.e. short 3 sec clips. The Samsung’s camera is of 8-megapixel quality and can record videos at 1080p videos similarly, but talking technically, the front camera of the S4 Mini is better, offering 1080p video recording with the 1.9MP lens, compared to the 1.6MP camera which is able to capture 720p videos at max. Though, we won’t Samsung a winner here because the quality is still compromised although the cameras bring out the 1080p and 720p videos with just less than the 2MP lens.

 Software Comparison

More than the OS, we would like to compare the interface here. HTC pushes its HTC Sense 5 platform on the Android Jelly Bean OS, while Samsung does the job of retaining the Samsung TouchWiz user interface to keep things simple, and the device too has got the Android JB.

Battery Comparison

The HTC One mini has a smaller battery capacity in compared to Samsung Galaxy S4 mini. Samsung’s figures don’t make as good reading with lower talk time and standby time. You can’t remove the battery of HTC One mini, because of the unibody.

Final Verdict – Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini vs HTC One Mini

All in all, there are some areas where the S4 Mini is better, but the HTC One Mini has got a few things quite better than the counterpart. If you are looking for something that looks good in hands, the One Mini should be the choice, but going with the specs for the heavy usage in comparison, the S4 Mini should be the one you should go for. This is one of those comparisons where the pricing is not a factor to consider at all, because both the devices are priced the same.

Well considering the prices I’d rather go with last year flagmen. Nexus 4 (one of which I happen to own) or Galaxy S3.
