The Xperia Z3 Compact is the sibling of the Xperia Z3 that is the flagship model of Sony. The Z3 Compact is part of Sony’s flagship Z3 mobile lineup and is pretty much similar like the bigger Xperia Z3. The device looks same as the Z3 but is smaller in size with the same design, runs the same software as the Z3 and has the same hardware. This device was unveiled along with the Xperia Z3 in the IFA event that held in Berlin along with Xperia Z3 Compact. The device has been priced around Rs 45000, which is pretty high considering it as a compact device.
The Xperia Z3 has a 4.6 inch touchscreen display with 720 x 1080 pixel resolutions that give a pixel density of 319ppi that is on the lower side when compared to Xperia Z3’s 424ppi. The device gets its power with the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, with a clocking speed of 2.5 GHz. The RAM memory on the compact device is reduced to 2 GB, and it will be accompanied with Adreno 330 GPU. There is the same 20.7 MP rear facing auto focus camera on the rear, accompanied with 2.2 MP camera on the front. The device runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat operating system out of the box and will be receiving the Android lollipop update in the future.
Z3 Compact packs a 2600 mAh (non-removable) battery on the back with a standby of 880h on 2G. We have seen that the Z series devices have good battery backup, as I have experienced with the Xperia Z2 as well as with the Xperia Z3. The on-board memory of the device is at 16 GB that can be further extended up to a maximum of 128 GB via microSD card slot. Apart from there are the usual connectivity options that we get, like Bluetooth v4.1, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi hotspot, GPS, GPRS and USB slots. These are the specifications of the Xperia Z3 Compact that are almost similar to its bigger sibling.
Coming to the design of Z3 Compact, the device has the same elegance as its flagship smartphone, and we can say that it’s better because of its translucent finish, giving more premium looks. The Z3 compact has a glass finish on both the sides making it prone to finger prints, but looks classy and more over the metal frame to its sides. There are almost negligible bezels to the side, and the top part of the bezel is occupied with the 2.2 MP camera and the Sony branding, above which is the ear piece. The bottom part of the bezel has a speaker, and the rest is wasted. The three capacitive touch buttons are placed onto the screen making it more complex for the users.
On the back, there is a 20.7 MP camera, beside which is the LED flash, and the center has been covered with the company’s branding. At the bottom it’s the Xperia branding and to the left of the device we can find the microSD card slot and the SIM slots that are covered with flaps. And even the USB port is also placed beside the microSD card slot. To the right of the device, starting from the top, we can find the power button and below which we can find the volume rockers and at the bottom we can find the dedicated camera button, so that the user need not open the camera from the application each and every time.
Another element that will get people talking is the fact it’s rolling in with PS4 compatibility. This feature will let you control your PlayStation 4 from within the same wireless network, making the Z3 Compact to function as a secondary screen. You can even use the dedicated PS4 controller with a dock.
At the top of the device, we can find the 3.5 mm audio jack and beside it is the reset pin that is used to reset the phone when you face any problem with the device. The device comes with a shatterproof glass protecting from scratches and also comes with Sony’s Triluminos display with X-Reality engine. Z3 compact is 8.6 mm thick and weights 129 grams. The device is IP68 rated for water resistance over 1 meter and 30 minutes.
The only problem I faced is the display that it has a 720p resolution, which was the same resolution that we can see on its predecessor the previous Z1 Compact. The Z3 compact is 0.3 inch bigger than the Z1 compact, so the pixels density reduces as the same number of pixels has to be spread out on a bigger screen. Apart from this everything is else in the device is excellent.
The Interface of the device is also very good, and it should not be anything new to the Sony lovers. We did not find any lag in the UI, and we can expect it as the device is a flag ship model. The Xperia Z3 Compact is priced high, even after being a compact device. We should see if Sony has any plans of reducing the price in the future. I would love to use this device for few days and will be coming will all the possible details of the device in the complete review.
