Talk of the 10.1-inch large screen Android tablets, you won’t be seeing anything cheap and good at the same time in the market, but we got to see an exception here with the Stellar Pad from Spice which comes with the 10.1 inch capacitive touchscreen, a Dual core processor and a whooping 7600 mAh battery, all this priced at Rs. 13000 in the Indian market. The tablet device is quite large but isn’t that heavy at the same time, and having a thickness of 10mm it looks sleek with the curved edges.
The Stellar Pad has got an IPS LCD display, with the screen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, and this one looks pretty bright but doesn’t reflect the same in very sunny conditions. The company has kept the design neat on the sides too, with all the connectivity ports on one side, the physical keys on the top and the other sides are plain. There’s the 3.5mm headset jack, the MicroUSB slot, Mini-HDMI slot, the DC-in Charger point, a Mic and the MicroSD card slot all on one side. The physical keys on the top left side include the volume rocker and the power/lock key.
There is a central rear camera with the 3-megapixel quality which doesn’t have a neat quality for the large screen to display, but Spice has included two cameras in the tablet – with a VGA front facing camera for the video calling. The rear camera has the digital zooming, and does record videos but that is not much impressive. We tried playing 1080p videos using Youtube and the output was neat, not lagging at all and the sound quality through the speaker grills on the back side was good but there’s a disadvantage with the speaker placement, as the position in the side panels would have been better as we would usually place the Pad on the table and the sound would get blocked there.
The best thing about the interface, is the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, so one wouldn’t have the hassles any soon about the software update as Jelly Bean is the latest OS version of Android. There’s a load of pre-installed applications in the Stellar Pad, and the multiple home screens can handle many app shortcuts, widgets and folders. The pre-installed apps include all the Google-based applications like the Google Talk, Gmail, Google Maps, Search, Latitude, Youtube and the document viewing is possible through the Documents To Go app, although that’s not our end suggestion, as the Play Store has got several better apps too.
The connectivity options included in the Stellar Pad is the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, MicroUSB, HDMI and even the 3G connectivity using the USB dongle, and this can be done using the MicroUSB to USB connector wire, and the 3G connection is active. We would usually not suggest this always as the USB connectivity does eat up a lot of battery, but here the Stellar Pad has got a whooping 7600 mAh battery, and we tested the battery and found it real strong, active for a couple hours with the USB dongle having the connection active. This for sure is a perfect answer for the absence of a SIM card slot in the tablet device.
The 3-megapixel camera on the rear side has all the capturing options and a lot of settings to play around with, but we aren’t satisfied with the actual quality of capturing – both Pictures and Video. The front camera is worse, but with the light in front of the object, it is quite clear for the video chatting.
The internal storage in the Stellar Pad is 16GB, of which around 12.5GB is available to the end-user and that should be good enough, but Spice has given the option to expand the storage to 64GB using the MicroSD card. Talking about the graphics output, the Stellar Pad has a great graphics output thanks to the Quad Core GPU for the graphics.
The Stellar Pad from Spice, modeled Mi-1010 is a perfect replacement in budget to those high-end and high-priced tablet devices like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 version, which also has got the 10.1-inch touchscreen with the same resolution, but is priced more than double, but the Stellar Pad misses the SIM Card slot, and the different inbuilt storage versions, as its limited to just a single 16GB version.
But for the price of Rs. 13000 in the Indian market, getting a decent 10.1-inch tablet device was not that easy unless you go with some unknown brand just to have a satisfaction of holding the big screen in hands, with no actual productivity. We finally got impressed with something from Spice, as the Stellar Pad has a good processor, a neat screen and the design, only if the Camera could do a better job than it does with the 3-megapixel quality. And, the most positive point to mention – the powerful 7600 mAh battery that does provide a long battery life.
