How to update Galaxy S2 GT I9100 with Official XWKL1 Gingerbread 2.3.6 Firmware
Good news for Galaxy S2 users as an all new Official firmware has arrived and is dubbed as Gingerbread 2.3.6 firmware. This update will be very short lived as an all new Official version of Android 4.0 ICS will be rolling out very soon in 2012. Though this update is official you can update with the help of KIES too but for all those who are on the beta firmwares and KIES doesn’t recognize the device too can apply this update as we will see in the due course of the article on how to manually apply tis update. The update which we will be checking out is specially for Indian Galaxy S2 GT I9100 users, though it can be applied by any S2 I9100 users as it’s a Global update with Multi CSC. The version is dubbed as XWKL1 Gingerbread 2.3.6.
Note: This update is not for Galaxy S2 I9100G users and is strictly for the devices of whose the model number is GT I9100. If you are not sure of the Model number then you can find by dialing “*#1234#” in your phone after which you will get to see the model number of yours.
Disclaimer: Please note that this process of firmware update is not recommended for the basic users and is only recommended for the advanced users. Also, we should not be held responsible for any damage happened to your device in any manner after applying this update.
So, let’s proceed with the list of pre Requisites you need to follow after which we will see the procedure in the next page.
Pre Requisistes:
- So as to ensure that the data is kept safe, you need to backup the same using the below mentioned tips so that just in case if the data gets erased or gets corrupted, the same can be easily restored with the help of below mentioned tips.
Note: Don’t backup the below mentioned data with the help of KIES as it may or may not support KIES after the update.
SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Notes – Manually save the notes in your mail as these will be lost in the process of firmware update
Call Log - Call Log and Restore
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names”
- A minimum of 50% battery charge needs to be there left in the device so as to ensure that the phone doesn’t get turned Off in the middle of firmware update. The APN Settings are located in this path, Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names, you need to note all these manually on a piece of paper so that you can reconfigure the same. Disable tools like Security Suites, Firewall tools and also the KIES PC Suite as these tools generally tend to interrupt the process of firmware update.
So, once you are done with all the above instructions, it’s time to proceed to the next page where we will see on what are the instructions to update Galaxy S2 with Gingerbread 2.3.6 XWKL1.

Thanks for providing the latest official update, I am using the Beta update provided on your website, I am downloading the firmware now but when I go through the installation process I guess you missed the file name to be selected and it only shown as empty commas, so kindly provide the file names to update both the files in a proper order.

I think you need to edit the article a bit as the places where is says that we need to select a PDA file doesn’t says which file we need to select and instead only ” ” are placed over there.
So without knowing which file to select at a particular point, I suppose none would be able to install this update.

if you install the kernel file and update the KIES to the latest version. your device will be detected by KIES as official version!

Just to update, the battery usage has improved significantly and also the charge time. The Media Volume is quite loud now on the stock player and Audio has improved, Now I feel the Rumbling Bass as it should. Mentioning again about the Native 3G Video Call works.
I dont care about the IPhone Siri, I like to use my phone and its fun organizing and searching things on my own. and with this update, the Iphone 4S is beaten down again.

you need to update the kernel and also you need to update the KIeS!
After updating to this FW apps are not supported. eg.citibank, call track . was working with xwkk5. But issue with that fw was phone use to restart after few hours if connected to wifi. This fw is stable but i am not sure why apps are not supported.
I have done as you said but still its not recognized by kies. In download mode it shows SUMSUNG OFFICIAL but when I connect it for KIES it says ” your device cannot be update by Kies. Why its happen. I flash the kernal also as you said.

you need to update using the Manual method, since you are on non official firmware, you might not get this update via the KIES!

For the Android Lovers, who are having problems getting their phone recognized by Kies, Please follow the instructions provided By Neal every step by step and you should not have any problem with Kies from there on. I have already mentioned in the earlier posts about the improvements in this Update. Kindly read the instructions carefully and follow the same to update or else your result will be that its not recognized by Kies, you might brick your phone or worst case scenario…..you might end up with a very expensive paper weight. Instructions are very clear and precise by Neal.

I have APns Problem
I have tried the following. Reset my phone and get apn back. Switch of my phone and switch on again and no apn’s on my phone. I have used Different apn backup apps installed and when you restore it says ok but still no apn’s on the phone.

Earlier the Videos used to directly play in Landscape mode, even when auto-rotation mode is switched off… But now the its plays in Portrait mode. Please let me know if there are any settings to be changed, other than switching on the auto-rotation mode.

So this is the Indian version of the firmware? Because I wanted to root after this update and use the stock kernel for XWKL1 because I couldn’t find the kernel for XWKK5.

Hello Neela, the extraction of the file failed on several attempts. I copy and paste the password, and manually type the password, i ticked show password to make sure it is correct, however the extraction still failed with a message saying corrupt file or wrong password.
Do you have any advice on this problem?

its official update for INDIA, you can apply this along with kernel. the kies will detect your phone!

Thank you very much for this firmware update, Its Rocking I upgraded from 2.3.3 to 2.3.6 and lots of bugs have been fixed in my S2.
Including my battery issue which use to drain out in 8~9 hours, after the upgrade I am able to fetch my battery to 10~12 hours. Which is remarkably good.
However I found a issue after the upgrade, whenever I open any application, there is a slowness and able to see the pixel by pixel on the screen while opening the application.
Earlier this was very smooth and fast without any delay in opening the application.
Pls help if this is a know issue.

Hi Neel,
Successfully upgraded the phone. The phone is Indian make and is to be used in India. Followed the exact procedure as mentioned but still kies is not recognizing the phone. At the end of my current firmware listing it shows XEU in brackets. I think that is the issue…. Can you please guide me to change that and get my phone re-detected…Do I need to do anything else like factory reset or cache clearing..?

I have updated my galaxy s2 via odin with the instruction mentioned to update the samsung official version and it got updated. Later once i got connected to kies it gave a message \Your Device Does Not Support Software Upgrade Via Kies\.

Hi I updated my SGS2 to 2.3.6. The process was smooth and flawless. But after the update i am facing issues with WIFI connectivity. Once connected it works fine, but as soon as it goes in idle mode or the screen is locked if i stop using my phone, with WiFi switched ON the trouble begins. When I unlock the screen and again try to browse using WiFi the net doesn’t work. I need to restart the WiFi again so as to browse again. This issue happens again and again.
There was no problem prior to the update. Any solution to this problem?

helllo neal,ive got a serious question for which im not able to find the answer anywhere.im currently using xxki3 and its rooted,the thing is im not able to install custom roms n im not able to make a backup of my stock,it says e:signature verification failed,i even tried toggling the signature settings but still its the same reply i get from my phone.ive been trying so hard to install cyanogen 7.1 stable and im just not able to.will be very pleased if u can give me a solution and it will be great if u can post an article on installing custom roms.
my next question is after installing xwkl1 firmware on my phone im not able to use 3g,my apn is perfect i cleared cache,wiped my phone,installed kernel nothing helps,please help me sir.

I followed your 2.3.6 Upgrade instructions to the dot and the upgrade went without a hitch.
My GS2 is much nippier now and I find it connects to my Belkin and D-Link WiFi router much better, with increased range. I am also able to get full 4Mbps on my BSNL broadband connection, although I am not sure it is related to the OS upgrade. Earlier I could not get more than 1.5-3Mbps try as much as I did at various times of the day.
Do you have a comprehensive list of enhancements which 2.3.6 does over 2.3.4? Please reference if u do.
We nor eagerly await your upgrade on ICS for GS2 (Presently, 4.0.3 seems buggy, from the comments on your blog).
I will still follow your instructions, as Kies is much too unreliable. I wonder why Samsung messed up so badly on Kies.
Do you have any heads-up on the release date when official ICS will be released for GS2.?

A late bloomer I must say… Thank you for steps. It worked out perfectly and I am now on 2.3.6. Just to share my experience, my first upgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 did not work as expected, the firmware got corrupted and a visit to the service center helped me come back on track, the guys there put me on to a 2.3.3 and gave me some gyaan on the do’s and dont’s of upgrading. I went ahead now with the steps as mentioned here and lo.. behold… 2.3.6 is installed…. Thanks once again.

Have just updated to firmware above and it installed great without any problem.
only after a couple of days have noticed while phone still has full charge it has
turned off/frozen (looks turned off) however on/off button does nothing…have to remove
battery and starts again no proplem except noticed data/phone signal takes longer to open.

I am having a similar issue. I have updated both files through Odin (the first one and the kernel). The phone seems to be working ok, but when I connect to Kies it says \Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies.\. I have also updated to the latest version of kies on my pc.
Should I not be able to update via kies after I have followed your steps?

after updating 2.3.6 XWKL1 everything. i m not getting network. when i search and select airtel it says: unable to connect try later. i have updated very carefully 4-5 many times. my all drivers are installed with kies. everything is perfect. but suddenly language was changed and no network and rebooted so many times and cleared wiped , cache everything plz help. i purchased in guarantee .

there was not yeloow triangle after flash but when i rooted phone it came back.

And for all those people who faced battery drop issus initially…Even i suffered 50% drop in battery charge over the night time…
Following is the solution which worked for me and now my battery survives for complete 2 days with moderate usage…
Complete one battery recharge cycle.
Enable When Screen turn off option in Wifi Sleep Policy
Wifi and Network – Wifi setting – Advanced Option – Wifi Sleep Poliyc – select When screen turn off
Deselect Turn off Wifi option in Custom Power Saving Setting.
Hope this help you all…
also switch off Market Data, Data Sync, GPS, Wifi, Location when not required…It gives tremendous boost to the battery.

I was using 2.3.6 xxkl1, as it was not recognised by kies i followed ur guide. but i think i’m in serious problem, After the first PDA update my GS2 keeps on restarting. Its like its stuck in a vicious cycle- the animated “S” comes in then the SAmasung Galaxy SII below it again the animated “S” logo… This continues. I tried the kernel update after this and the problem is same. I never reach my home screen. My earlier 2.3.6 CSC was KOR.

I’m also facing same kind of issue “Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies”
Let me explain what happened exactly:
1. After 100% charged we get an notification on top stating that 100% Charged , when I unplug the charger after that battery percentage will go down to 95% or 96% immediately as on when unplug the charger
2. And my S2 was little bit hanging while operating
3. While charging mobile is getting heat
Because of all the above reasons I have approached Samsung Servicing Center (authorized) and I was to told that there is problem with Mother Board and needs to be replaced and need to update the OS also,
After 3 days I got my mobile back with replaced new mother board and software updated, after that also above mentioned (Point 1) issue not resolved and moreover I could see and new issue that, when I tried to connect my mobile to KIES it says that “Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies” and it’s showing only current firmware version and not showing that this is the latest firmware version,
Not sure what to do, today again I have approached Samsung Servicing Center to take look into that,

As I mentioned … I read all the comments and then made my PC equipped with latest version of Kies and USB drivers. But still this problem was reoccurring. Then I did the thing which is not mentioned in the article. I cleaned my S2 … cache, history, running apps. & then atlast …. yuppie …. it worked. Now my S2 shows its Android 2.3.6 and also get detected on Kies.

I had been following your procedure and after first step. I am not getting yellow box as mentioned below…. What to do??

Now after you see the home screen, remove the USB cable to enjoy your Galaxy S2 GTI9100 on the latest and official Gingerbread 2.3.6 update.”
I restarted the phone and allowed omputer to get all drivers, as i was getting USB drivers issue… now its working fine, thanks buddy!!!

I’m from India and have been watching all of your articles about GS2 and i updated my GS2 to 4.0.3 as and when it was released and later i reverted back to 2.3.6 xwlk1 through Odin following your guidance lines. My phone is working fine, but sometimes when the phone is in idle mode (i.e. screen off) suddenly it turns on and turns off. There won’t be any sms or miss call when i check. Is this a virus problem or any malfunctioning? I’ve got Antivirus installed in my phone too and that didn’t find any virus either.
One more question, when i connected to Kies it is detecting/recognizing but when i hit Firmware upgrade and initialization showing “GT I9100 does not support initializing.” Is this a problem when Samsung releases official ICS to update my phone through Kies?
Please suggest.
