How to Update Nexus S with Jellybean 4.2 Firmware – Tutorial

Nexus S LogoAndroid 4.2 makes way for Nexus S smartphone unofficially as unfortunately Google Inc. ruled out any further OS upgrades for Nexus S smartphone/. Please note that this is not an Official firmware and is a custom ROM firmware which gives the same experience as that of the one which official version gives out. The best part or the highlight of the Jellybean 4.2 is that it comes with all the apps of latest / stock Jellybean 4.2 firmware which was earlier made available to Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and to Nexus 4 range of smart devices.

So, before we proceed, since this is a custom ROM firmware, you will have to make sure that your phone is rooted and installed with the custom recovery image. To check on whether your device is rooted or not, download the “Root Checker” app from the Google PLAY Store and check the same. If the device is rooted, then you will have to download the ROM Manager app from the Google PLAY Store. Express Pre Requisites:

  • With the help of below mentioned steps, you need to back up all the data present in your Nexus S so that just in case if the data gets corrupted or deleted, the same can be restored manually. Once backup is taken, move all the target back up files to your computer so as to safeguard the same.

Note: Don’t create a backup of the data with the help of ROM Manager as it may brick the device.

SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log – Call Log and Restore
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names

  • Make sure that the minimum charge left in your device is at least 30% so as to make sure that device doesn’t get turned Off in the middle of firmware update. From the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”, enable the USB Debugging, ensure that the USB debugging option is ticked. Also, make sure that your computer has active USB ports with Full Read / Write Access.

Procedure to Update Jellybean 4.2 in Nexus S smartphone:

  • Download the Jellybean 4.2 Firmware Package from here to your computer. Once downloaded, connect your Nexus S smartphone to the computer with the help of original USB cable and once you have copied the same, you will need to disconnect the device.
  • Assuming that you have downloaded the ROM Manager app from PLAY Store, open the same to select “FLASH Clock Work Mod Recovery Image” for flashing the CWM image in the device. It will download the image from Wi Fi / Mobile Internet, so ensure that you have active internet connection.
  • Now, once it’s finished, you will be notified about the same and then select “reboot into recovery mode”.
  • In recovery mode, select “Wipe data/factory reset” & “Wipe Cache partition”. If the device starts normally, then you will need to re try the process of entering the device in the recovery mode.
  • Now, select “install zip from sd card” to choose the placed Jellybean 4.2 Firmware package in your deivce. Once selected, it will take around 2 -3 minutes for applying rhe update. Now, once the firmware is updated, select “go back” and select “reboot system now”. To check on whether the firmware is updated or not, head over to the path “Settings > About Phone” for checking the same.

Note: Just in a rare case if the device doesn’t boot up or show the home screen then remove the battery and reinsert the same to boot the device again in the normal mode.
