How To Update Samsung Captivate i897 with Gingerbread 2.3.5 Firmware

Procedure to update your Samsung Captivate I897 with the Gingerbread 2.3.5 UCKJ1 Release:

  • First up you will have to download the Gingerbread UCKJ1 2.3.5 Zip file which contains all the files which we will be requiring in the process of firmware update. So, as soon as you download the same in your computer or laptop you will need to proceed to unzip the same. Please note that in the process of unzipping, it will prompt you for the password. Enter the password as “androidadvices.com” without the inverted comas.

File Extraction

  • So, once you are done with the unzipping, you will now have see that there are two files which are present in the extracted files which are Odin as well as the tar file which is nothing but the firmware file. Additionally there will also be a .dll file which you need to just ignore it as it’s a supporting file and nothing else.

Extracted Files

  • Now, you need to open the Odin executable file in the Odin after which you will see a screen as shown in the below screen capture.

Odin for Captivate

  • Now, turn Off the phone so that you can then enter into the download mode. To enter into download mode, you will have to hold down the Volume down key and then press the Power ON button simultaneously to turn ON the device. Just in case if the device boots up in the normal mode then you will have to again try till it doesn’t enter the download mode. Please note that it’s highly not recommended to not to proceed further if you are unable to enter the download mode.

Galaxy Captivate Download Mode

  • Please note that there are many versions of Odin which are currently available and are provided by other forums but beware of using them as they are not recommended and the one which comes along with the above mentioned zip file is the recommended one.

Odin for Captivate

  • So, once you enter into the download mode, you will now need to proceed to connect the phone while in the download mode and Odin opened in your computer with the help of the USB cable which you got at the time of purchasing the phone. Once you connect the same, after 3 – 4 minutes you will see that the ID : COM block will turn yellow, generally it turns yellow within 5 minutes. Turning this into yellow means that all the required drivers have been updated successfully and you are ready to proceed with the firmware update.

Phone Connected in odin

  • So, now you will have to click on the “PDA” tab and then you will have to select the file named “” which is there in the extracted folder. Once you select the same, you will have to now click on the “Start” button in the Odin after which you will see that the firmware update process will be started.

Files selected in odin

  • Within a maximum time of 5 -10 minutes you will see that the firmware will be updated successfully. Now, upon successful firmware update, you will be prompted to enter the Google Account preferences followed by the Language selection preference.
  • So, there you go you have now successfully updated the Samsung Galaxy Captivate I897 with the latest version of firmware. Just in case if the firmware updation got stuck at any point of time then you need to turn Off the phone, re insert the battery and then again you need to follow the procedure to apply the update.
  • Next up, you will have to now restore the contents which you have created a backup of which includes the APN Settings mainly as without the APN Settings you will not be able to access the 3G / GPRS in your phone. Also, you need to restore the backup of all other data like SMS, Contacts etc.

So there you go, you have now successfully learnt on how you can easily upgrade the firmware of your Samsung Captivate I897 with the latest version of gingerbread 2.3.5 release. Do let us know just in case if there is anything you need help on in the comments section below as we will try our level best to get back with the solution in the least turnout time.

  8. I was able to root my captivate 2.3.5 with odin. My current version is UCKK4, kernel is 2.6.35.7- 1897uckk4-cl614489. My only problem is OCLF wont let me do the lagfix V2.2. It says I dont have system/bin/playlogos1//system/bin/playalogo file. Anyone know how to get this lagfix to work?

  9. Okay, it said it was checking md5, then it said Leave md5. It started the firmware update, but stopped at the “.bin” I had just got it out of semi-brick with one click unbrick where i had to install different drivers. Any ideas to get this to work? thanks.

  15. Hi.. per message from ATT, I upgraded my Captivate to Gingerbread 2.3.5 and my build number is UCKK4.
I am observing frequent Tethering/force close issues. Also phone hang many time when I use my client email or plug-in charger. Very very frustrating.. My froyo was much better !!.. Can anyone help whom should I contact or how to resolve this… thx

  16. I downloaded the \Gingerbread UCKJ1 2.3.5 Zip file\, followed all instructions and waited for 10 minutes + and the \ID : COM\ bar has not transferred to the yellow stage. Was I sopposed to click on the start button and/or check off the phone box ? I’m at a stand still at this point.

  17. Att Motherfuckers have removed “Deactivate Data” Button!!!!

  18. Hi,

I used this to upgrade to 2.3. Can someone please tell me how to downgrade to official 2.2 or 2.1. Thanks.

    • we will come out with the tutorial!

      • I’m hoping for this tutorial as well since Samsung has now released the official 2.3 upgrade. They’re uploader won’t work on my phone currently running this leaked version of 2.3 and they seem unwilling to help me force update it.

  19. Hello,

The 2.3.5 install went great. There were no hiccups. However the phone now has following issues:
1> Tethering manager forces close randomly.
2> The defacto camera software that came with the phone now does not have the multiple SCN modes

Also, in froyo I used to have the phone, email, browser in the bar on the bottom part of the screen. Now it has been replaced by Home button or App button. Is it possible to customize this bottom bar?

    Any inputs will be appreciated.

Will you be working on the next version of gingerbread (eg..2.3.7 etc) or is the above version your last for Gingerbread?

    Thanks much!

  20. I just sent my captivate back and recived a new/referbished phone with the new gingerbread on it, my phone had froyo and the camera on the new phone takes like 2 seconds to take a pic, my older phone took it immediatly, it is really frusterating me and no the delay option is not on, please help :(

  21. I loaded the 2.3.5 firmware and it works great except for one issue, I continue to have \Tethering Manager Force Close\ issues every time I either plug or unplug to charge and when I turn WiFi on and off. Tried reloading, same issue, tried emptying cache in recovery mode, issue still persists. Any ideas?

    • I’m having the same issue with mine. It often locks up and restarts itself when doing either action. Here’s hoping for an answer!

    • I just updated mine this weekend (2/18/12)…everything went according to plan, except the same problem with the Tethering issue…which I cannot believe Samsung and ATT did NOT catch…since it comes right up in your face whenever you plug in a USB cable (or unplug it). I am an IS professional, and this is a totally unacceptable flaw that should have been caught, and at the very least, acknowledged and a patch made for it. I only hope Samsung is reading these posts…

  25. Thanks Nate.

Followed your instruction and it worked great!

  26. Thanks Nate.
Followed your instruction and it worked perfectly!

  27. First: Install “kies” from Samsung. This will install the necessary drivers for your Captivate.

Second: After driver installation, take out your sim card and memory card and remove the battery.

Third: After installing the zip file containing the firmware, run odin (it’s in the zip) as administrator.

Fourth: With odin running, hold both volume up and down and plug the device into your usb cable. Install battery after plugging in the usb cable while still holding both volume up and down. This should bring it into download mode. (If not, try battery first then cable all while holding volume up and down.)

Fifth: Odin should display a yellow box with a com number. Select PDA button and navigate and select the included firmware.

Sixth: Click start button and let it do its thing. It will reboot when finished and complete the installation on the phone.

This is what I did and I had no problems. I used the included Odin and image file from the top of the page. I had zero data loss and didn’t have to reinstall any programs or settings. This is freakin AWESOME! Thank you!!!

  28. I had the same problem and thought I was screwed. Then I was trying to figure out how to reset to factory specs and another site had a link to do so. They said get back to download mode so I was trying the options. The third option was to remove the battery, the sim card, and the memory card; then put the battery back in, hold both volume buttons and plug the phone into the computer. Do not hit the power button. It went back to download mode. Since I was back there, I decided to try this again by unplugging phone and restarting this process. It started and locked up again. I closed odin, unplugged phone from computer and restarted odin. Then plugged phone back in and tried a third time. This time it worked perfectly. Don’t give up, it should work. Good luck.

Hi. I just successfully installed android 2.3.5 but before when i was running 2.2 and i held down the power button i had an option to enable or disable the data(the 3g service) but know it is gone. I was wondering if there is a way to fix this. Also does hitting settings>Wireless and Network>Mobile Networks>Use Packet data(checked on) mean that I will be able to use the data plan?

  30. The update works great and had made the phone very fast :-). And I fixed the tethering process problem to some extent by clearing the cache in recovery more. I still have to kill the tethering process once a day which is not a big deal.

The big problem I am facing is the phone crashing/rebooting when I am in the middle of a phone call. It happens once or twice a day. I am unable to debug why it’s happening. Any suggestions on how to fix this issue?

    ~V

  31. Worked perfectly for me! Took only a little longer then 5 mins and I didn’t loose any data at all! I had all defaults to sd cards anyway. The phone is running extremely smooth and so far so good! Thank you so much!

  32. Hey, I would like to root my captivate which I updated to 2.3.5. When will the rooting procedure be posted? I realize this question has been posted before. But in October you said the rooting procedure would be posted soon. It is now December.

  33. hey, i dowloaded the file but i dont know how to unzip it…there is no option telling me to unzip it.. i just opened the file till it reached odin, then when i clicked it , it told me to extract all files… what do i do.. please help!!

  34. Can’t get this to work. I have to use the usb cable to get to the download screen, volume – and power doesn’t work no matter how I try it. Even after getting into the downloading screen that way odin won’t recognize my phone. Help? :(

  35. Thank you very much. I’ve been wanting to throw this phone into traffic for a while with all the bugs and issues I’ve had. I have been told 2.1 was known for the issues I was having, but there has yet to be an update to anything newer on the captivate. This was a fairly simple process and my phone seems to be working great now. I should mention, I was unable to get the phone to go into download mode as described above. Another method I found online which worked right away, pull the battery and reinstall it, then hold the volume buttons while plugging the phone into the usb of the computer.

  36. The update worked perfect for me but how come only when i call can i only hear through one earphone but when i listen to music i hear through both

  37. I updated my stock phone easily from Froyo. I do get a tether force closing when I connect my usb.

  38. Works great on my Captivate.

Any idea when you might come up with a rooting tool?

  39. Awesome! A little fudging to learn how to do this properly, had to use the Odin 1.81 but the phone took it like a champ and works much smoother and faster now. The onboard email client even works with my Yahoo account now so I can dump the crappy app I was using.

  40. My phone got semi-bricked as well. I got it back into download mode and Odin gets stuck at Initialization… drivers are installed as needed…cache was cleared before starting any of this…help!

  41. Hey there, android lovers, i’ve been doing flashing since the time i got my android from stock rom of 2.1 up to the latest i can acquire. one thing i’ve noticed though everytime i am flashing. that econe you got there and wont let you go to download status. what i did was leave the phone water dry(at least that was i could think of) i mean let it dry out of power for at least 10 mins(mine i left it about an hour after frustration of not able to successfully finishing it sooner). Then try again doing the steps of putting it to download mode, yes it did come back to that status after a while. But guess what, i found out that even if your flashing via odin stopped or crash eventually (just dont turn off your phone or better yet just leave it just like that in download mode) you just have to close your odin and just repeat the process(don’t worry as long as your phone is in download mode odin will detect it or correct me here if it does not apply to all phone but mine is that’s what happened). I’m not a very techie person but i do know alot about things and stuff. more on what i like most. hope this helps many. cheers! :D

  42. My computer does not detect my samsung captivate after upgrading to gingerbread. Any Solution for that, Please?

  43. Worked like a charm. Followed all the steps as mentioned in the post. Thanks a ton.

  44. Got it Neal. Flashed it five times now and nothing but the boot loop. Good thing is I was able to get it download mode after each flashin. Any other solution beyond flashing UKJ1?

  45. Is there a UCKJ1 boot loaders package available to flash I897? I am stuck with bootloop…

  46. I tried flashing my Samsung Captivate I897 with UCKF1 and it failed. Now I am stuck with the Phone->Triagle -> PC mode. Dspite several attempts not able to flash with KF1. Tried to flash I897 with UCKJ1 with Odin 1.0 and after sbl.bin it says Removed and Odin got disconnected from my phone. All options in Odin are grayed out. Used Odin v1.81, it seemed to apply the firmware but I am stuck in bootloop. After it said Removed!! in Odin log (RESET was the status in ID:COM) my phone went in to recovery mode and I had to select the reboot option to get it started again. After it rebooted, the last two steps appeared in Odin log and th status in ID:COM changed to PASS.

Not sure if I did something wrong, but appreciate your help to bring my phone back to working.

Here is the Odin log for your refence:

  47. I might want to go back to the official Froyo. Does anyone know how to do that? I know I can go all the way back to 2.1 and update back to 2.2, but I’d rather just roll back to 2.2.

  48. I upgraded to gingerbread in my att samsung captivate. everything went well. nothing deleted including contacts, call history. But after upgrade my battery finishes very quickly and my camers’s scan function is not active. Is there any solution for that.
    thanks,
    Basu

  49. Unzip what file?

  50. I opened odin, plugged in my phone, and clicked the PDA tab and could not find the ( \ ) file.
    So no update

    Whats up with that?

  51. Everything went fine with the download. My only problem is my sound is reversed. If I plug in my earphones I will hear it on my speaker. Same with answering the phone. I have to use the speaker mode to hear the caller. Should I reflash? and do I need to keep my sd card out when doing so?

  52. FWIW, I reflashed and now wifi works. Weird.

  53. Anyone else finding wifi no longer works?

  54. I applied the upgrade last night, worked like a charm. It runs faster than 2.2 and does not experience the annoying hangs I experienced with 2.2. Best part… I finally have voice dialing back. I lost that feature when I changed out my Motorola 1200 for the Captivate.

  55. UPDATE: I just tried with Odin v1.81 version and it worked!
You can download it from here:
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=627528&d=1308266216

    • I HAD to use 1.81. The version of odin in the guide semi-bricked my phone. Using the guide here I was able to get back into download mode, then i was able to use odin 1.81 to load the os.

  56. Not sure if it really took. Never asked for a password when I downloaded the file. Says my phone is at 2.3.5 but didn’t loose anything from my phone. IE call logs, texts, APN settings, mail settings. Previous upgrade to 2.3.3 required all this info to be re entered. Not too sure about this one.

  57. Same problem than others. It gets stuck while updating. I waited for 20 minutes and it doesn’t seem to complete.
    This is what I get:

    Added!!
    Odin v.3 engine (ID:3)..
    File analysis..
    Enter CS for MD5..
    Leave CS..
    Get PIT for mapping..
    Firmware update start..

  58. hey android freaks lol
pls i need your help : so i tried today to update my samsung captivate to 2.2 froyo evrything was rolling perfect untie the moment i tried to get up and by mistake i unpluged the phone with the pc. i tried the emergency recovery several times but when i turn on the phone it shows me an econe of a phone connected to a pc and btw a yellow tiangel with a question mark in the middle. i tried again the emergency recovery by remove and
replace the battery and holding down both the volume up & down keys while inserting the data cable but no luck. pls pls pls help me
    thanks in advance!!!!!

  59. I have no trouble at all for any reason; everything went perfectly smooth, and it only took about 5 minutes. i didn’t even have to put in a password. my phone is running much, much smoother now. i also have “Unknown Sources” available to me now.

There were some few things I kinda had to figure out on my own, though… and couple of minor features that should not have been there

Other than, it’s been awesome. No problem at all so far!

    • Update: The only main thing I’ve lost is the ability to capture a screenshot. Other than that, Gingerbread is what Captivate needed. Its performance is smooth. I’m now looking forward for a stable Ice Cream Sandwich, IF it will ever be released.

  60. Hi, I am having the same issue as JLA. The las message it says is leave CS and it is taking over 10 minutes and not going anywhere. I also downloaded the drivers. I’ll try a computer restart if it doesn’t work this time. Also the zip file didn’t ask for a password.

  61. Hi I am having some issues updating my captivate. Odin recognizes my phone and i start the update … but it doesn’t finish, the last message in Odin says leave CS… over 10 minutes it takes… whats going on?

  62. oddly enough the Odin recognized my captivate when I unplugged it to another usb port!
    WTF?!

  63. Odin dosen;t recognize the phone, i have all the drivers installed.
can you give me a hand?
    Thanks

    • have you installed the kies in your pc!?

    • Hi, My Captivate didn’t recognize the update either. I spent some time on the phone with my Carrier trying to figure out why Kies wouldn’t let me upgrade… then they made me call Samsung, and they did the same trouble shooting with me. Again, no update. I actually had to send my phone into Samsung to have them flash it then Update it to 2.3 for me.

I don’t know why, and they wouldn’t tell me why either. I had no problem updating to 2.2 but 2.3 wouldn’t work.

  64. Hi, What tool/procedure can i use to root this Gingerbread?

    Thanks!!!

  65. With Gingerbread 2.3.5, will the i897 fianally do voice dial via Bluetooth?
