It has been found that many Android Phone users tend to ask this question,

Do i need to Root my Phone before i update with this firmware?

The answer is “NO” as rooting is different from the firmware update. Rooting basically opens up the device with which you can even access the system level files which cannot be done in a non-rooted phone. This firmware update doesn’t require you to root your phone before you proceed for the firmware update. Another thing is that if you have already rooted your phone before then after applying this firmware the root access will be revoked and then again you will have to root your device to get the root access.

Many of the users have misconceptions that rooting and updating with the beta ROMs is both at the same, but actually it’s not the case.

I’m having a problem, I cannot pass the step where you launch the program, then start the phone in download mode and then plug the phone via usb to computer.

my phone is not connecting successfully, I’m getting “Devise Drive software was not successfully installed”

I have the yellow triangle on the phone and I have the software running on the computer. I turned off the firewall and the anti virus. What else I can do? I never connected the phone to this computer before. This is a home laptop windows 7

Thanks goes out to Rahul Dixit. I tried to upgrade using the SPH-D700-EG22-8Gb-REL-DebugKernel.tar file and thought I bricked my phone. Luckily I had the original firmware files on hand and was able to use ODIN3 for epic to get my phone working again. Once I use the SPH-D700-EG22-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 file to do the upgrade, it worked perfectly. Thanks to everyone involved in this project.

      Hi Jim,

Can I ask what phone/service you use? I have epic 4 with Sprint and I couldn’t even connect my phone to my laptop windows 7. How did you go about recognizing your phone to apply the update and get it hooked with the software?

I’m getting “Devise Drive software was not successfully installed”

Ok. Worked well for me as I followed Rahul Dixit’s steps.

And for those who want to know, the PRL didnt get wiped. Its still on MTS.

Please double check your sources before giving wrong answers to newbies like me. Its really frustrating.

Thanks for the guide though. And its working wine in USB mode as well.

Will it work if i’m on EC05 Froyo 2.2.1 right now? I also have a few other queries if you or Rahul can help me out.

Does flashing a new modem wipe your prl? I’ve programmed my Epic on MTS. I hope Flashing this ROM or any other modems wont put it back on Sprint PRL.

And is it that only a particular ROM works on a particular modem?

The other problem I am facing is that my SD card doesnt get detected on my computer when I turn USB mass storage mode on. I have checked that the Debugging mode is off. It is the same for a PC as well as Mac Pro. The SD card doesnt get detected in both. Can u guide me to a solution please.

I am planning to root my phone. Was researching a lot. But the more I read the more I’m getting confused. Things used to be much simpler 2 years back, when I had a G1. Please link me to what is the best and safest way to root my Epic? A link to the latest CWM recovery would be very helpful.

    I keep getting this message:

    Enter CS for MD5..
Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
    Please wait..
    MD5 hash value is invalid
    SPH-D700-EG22-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 is invalid.

Also should anything be in the Bootloader field?

  13. Anthony

    August 3, 2011 at 7:43 am

so I found the file previously mentioned by Rahul, but the file type is different. It shows as a .7z file, “SPH-D700-EG22-8Gb-REL.tar.md5.7z” I attempted to change the file by deleting the “.7z” and the altered file. Upon running this configuration this is the response I received,

    MD5 hash value is invalid
    SPH-D700-EG22-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 is invalid.

What do I need to do to resolve this issue?

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 3, 2011 at 11:09 am

you can make use of another file!

    • Rahul Dixit

      August 3, 2011 at 1:45 pm

Hi Anthony, first you have to unzip SPH-D700-EG22-8Gb-REL.tar.md5.7z then only you will get SPH-D700-EG22-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 (without zip symbol), then ODIN will show this option. Don’t just change the name of Zip folder and don’t try to alter, just unzip you will get the required file.

You can check for details. If you are onrooted device, then there are deoxed flash version available which you can just copy on your SD card and install through CWM..

When I complete the process up to the PIT/PDA stage I do not have the option of selecting the file SPH-D700-EG22-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 instead I am given the options of 1)modem.smd 2)VICTORY8Gb_LOKE3_SMD.smd or 3) SPH-D700-EG22-8Gb-REL-DebugKernel.tar

How do I go about selecting/obtaining the correct file for the PDA? thanks for the help.

you can seelct from the zip file which you have extracted!

  15. Rahul Dixit

    August 2, 2011 at 4:12 pm

I think writer has to be careful because the the whole process depends on the file MD5 which he has not mentioned anywhere. Some time having wrong file at PDA section can brick the device.

Secondly, the writer has generalized the CDMA with GSM. For CDMA EVDO is 3G and settings are pre configured by service provider (Sprint). We can change the data setting only by using software like CDMA workshop, which we do in India for foreign handsets. We change PRL (Preferred Roaming List) for latching Indian Network of Reliance or Tata and then changing data settings either through CDMA workshop or other software of Qualcomm.

      Hi Rahul
I am using EPIC 4g on reliance network. If I update form Froyo (2.2.1) to Gingerbread (2.3) will it affect the PRL and other setting, ie will it give any problem for using in the Reliance network for data and mobile use. I am very new to this and look forward to your guidance.

Rahul was 100% right. I unzipped the SPH-D700-EG22-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 and used it under PDA and it worked. The filed noted in the article to use under PDA is incorrect. Seems its just the kernel.

  17. Rahul Dixit

    July 27, 2011 at 2:11 pm

You have mentioned that “APN Settings will be cleared”, this is CDMA device and APN is for GSM. There is no setting on CDMA as seetings are operator configured….I have flahsed two to three ROM but for none of them I needed to re configure data settings..

          August 1, 2011 at 3:49 pm

Actually the problem is in the file mentioned in the article, I lost my device for nearly two days, then tried the MD5 file which is not zipped. The file mentioned under PDA – SPH-D700-EG22-8Gb-REL-DebugKernel.tar is not correct.

I request writer to please check this and correct it..this is the cause of failure.

Under PDA- the file should be SPH-D700-EG22-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 . This has caused severe problem to new comers like me. By Accident I tried this MD5 extension file and it took around 3 minutes and my phone got life.

Although the article is good but the file mentioned in special boxes is totally deviate the process. I hope those who are facing problem of not booting the phone and get stuck at http://www.samsung.com screen will follow this and problem will get resolved.
