How To Update Samsung Galaxy Gio S 5660 to Gingerbread XXKQ3 2.3.4 Firmware

Galaxy Gio LogoGalaxy Gio, one of the most affordable smart phones has now got one of the most latest firmware update in the form of Gingerbread 2.3.4. So, for all those who has recently purchased this phone and wished that their device was loaded with the Gingerbread 2.3.4 version then this version comes to your rescue. This version of the firmware is dubbed as XXKQ3 and is the better version of Gingerbread 2.3.4 than ever as last version of the Gingerbread firmware version was reported with few errors but most of the errors are solved in this version which is the best part of this firmware.

So, in the due course of this article we will watch out on how you can easily update the firmware of your Galaxy Gio with the help of one simple tutorial which will be discussed in the further part of this article. The only thing i would like to request you is that kindly follow the instructions which are mentioned in this article as it has been found that most of the users doesn’t follow the instructions and tend to skip some crucial instructions which again is a very bad thing as it leads to the improper flashing of the firmware and results in the bricking of the phone.

Please note that, if you have rooted your Samsung Galaxy Gio earlier then you will have to note that updating with this firmware will un root the device, so you will have to root the device again if you wish to after upgrading to the latest 2.3.4 Gingerbread XXKQ3 version. Many of the users also have the locked versions of Galaxy Gio but you will have to note that updating with this firmware may or may not work with your phone so we hold no responsibility if you update the device which is networked locked handset. Irrespective of the version on which you are currently On, you can easily proceed to update your device but it’s very important to follow all the instructions which are given below carefully as if you don’t follow even a single instruction then there is a high possibility that you may end up bricking up your device, so make sure that you follow the instructions below so as to facilitate the smoother firmware update process.

I mean, I had a Galaxy Mini, and upgrade it with ODIN from 2.1 to 2.2, but after that I couldnt upgrade to 2.3. It said \This firmware can’t be upgrade\ or something like that.

Now on my Gio I upgrade it from 2.2.3 to 2.3.3, But I have to know for sure if I will be able to upgrade in future to an another official version trough KIES..

And one more question. If something goes bad, is there a solution to backup this version (2.3.3 from KIES) somehow?

    Thanks. :)

    Dear Neal,

My Gio was bought in Singapore. Its version froyo 2.2.1 and base S5660DXKC3 and Kernal 2.6.32.9-perf.

Could you advise me to which firmware version should I upgrade? Since the handset is sold in Singapore, I guess it would belong to Asian version. Currently, the phone language is English. My concern is that after flashing, would the phone still support English language as some of your fans say after the update the language becomes Russian.

Would very much appreciate your reply.

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

We are working on your request and will soon come up with an article to update with the latest firmware!

    • Chan

XXKQ3 installs with english; I flashed from Asian (S’pore) firmware as well

Me2, i have a problem with screen delay, i want to go back to v2.2.1 froyo.

  • Robin Dollekamp

Just followed all steps as mentioned in your guide. Everything worked fine got it installed and everything, however my phone now just keeps rebooting. You see the shiny samsung letters in space, after that glowing Samsung letters. After that it just goes back to the shiny space letters and this keeps repeating

    what to do?

    • Robin Dollekamp

Sorry fixed it, apparently i forgot to wipe data memory! This is essential! Muchos gracias! Its great :D Now just figuring out how to connect to the internet again without using WIFI.. doesnt seem to work yet..

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

you can remove the battery and restart the device in the normal mode!

  • John

I’ve just updated to XXKQ3 2.3.4 Firmware and followed your steps. Now my phone can’t detect my SD card after i wiped the data/factory and cache in recovery mode. Help needed!!!!!

    • John

Also when i select “mound sd card” , it shows sd card damaged. But when i connect the sd card to my laptop it recognizes without problem.

  • Luke

May I ask if there’s any difference between Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660 and Samsung Galaxy Gio S5660?

Because mine says GT-5660 and if I go to settings – about phone – model number says GT-5660.

So I’m wondering if I can use your upgrade, because you emphasized a lot that the model name and the number must be the same.

    Thanks

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

      Both are the same phones!

  • Vazs

    Thanks!

  • willem

    1. beware that you have to enable the serial port in your pc’s bios (for most pc’s this is the standard bios setting but i forgot that i had disabled it and the ODIN software uses a virtual serial port, which relies on the windows serial port driver to work)

    2. the latest step is to go into recovery mode. beware that you probably need the home/menu button + power button. (using the volume up button as well will NOT get you in recovery mode but in ARMS mode.)

i was already running 2.3.3 and my phone was configured and had several apps installed. after following the steps as mentions in the guide, everything was working just fine. no need to reconfigure or reinstall (so far).

  • lnokwg

My Phone is at RAMDUMP MODE only not at Recovery Mode during power up .

  • Deestr

thx friend, what a good how-to article,
but i got one question, u used the S5660XXKQ3, and i’ve found the S5660XXKQ6,
    is XXKQ6 better than XXKQ3?

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

      Yes, KQ6 is better!!

  • Blaise

Thanks man….got the update done on my new Galaxy Gio!…Havent started using the phone regularly…so cant say what are the differences!…anyways… for gio… to go to recover mode…its just the home key + power on button!…

  • Larsson

    Hi,

Got it working but only by checking One Package as Esa Rijal M wrote.
Seems to be working fine but is there any way to get scandinavian keyboard layout? ä, ö and å are missing.

    Thanks!

  • The_Viper

I don’t understand the APN and MMS settings thing. Do I have to change it ? And when you update to 2.3.3 you have BOOT Phone PDA and CSC file. How come you only need the Phone file in this update ? Sorry for al the questions but I dont want to brick my phone :s

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

no, you just need to note them up so as to configure the same again just in case if you lose these settings!!!

  • Andrew M

Great upgrade. Ran perfectly on my Australian Optus network locked GIO. Battery life is already looking much better, and I’ve gotten rid of the Optus bloatware.

    Two questions:
    1) Default home page when I press Home button is going to Screen 1 (whereas it was Screen 4). How do I fix that?
    2) I’ve lost the ability to have messaging skins, or has it moved under Android 2.3.4?

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

cleaar the cache and re apply the update!

      • Gabe

Hi i have EXACTLY the same problem as this person. Home button now goes to screen 1 (was screen4) and i have lost ability to change message skins. I care more about the problem with the home screen button. I have cleared the cache and user data several times and reflashed the phone several times….BUT IT DOESN”T HELP.

Please help…this is beyond annoying, i really don’t know what to do.

        Please help.
        THank you.

        • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

try updating the firmware once again!

you can add the home screens by pinching on the home screen!

        • Gabe

yes, i have added more screens, but no matter what i do, when i hit home button it always goes to screen 1. I move my home screen to position 3 or 4, but no matter what…i press home button, always goes to screen 1. …Any other suggestions? i have re-flashed several times, cleared cache before and after re-flashing…is there any way to customize this option?

          Thank you.

My Galaxy Gio 2.3.4 freezes every now and then .i.e., sometimes once a day. How do I downgrade to android 2.3.3

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

      Clear cache from recovery mode.

      • Kamran Dodhy

what are the steps to clear cache from recovery mode.
Two major issues for Galaxy Gio. Battery life has become extremely poor. I have to charge my phone TWICE A DAY. and occasional hangs and freezes requiring battery to be taken out and replaced followed by booting. How to get around these bugs?

        • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

ITS MENTIONED IN THE VIDEO! we will update with the same v soon!!

to which version of 2.3.3 you want to go?

  • Cordless

hi neal.. I have upgraded to 2.3.4 and I’m really happy with it.. but I can’t seem to have Adobe Flash 10.3 support in browser as per your changelog.. also I have read many times that Adobe Flash doesn’t support Armv6 processors (the one we have in our galaxy gio).. so, can you please elaborate on this or please demonstrate if galaxy gio can really have ‘Browser flash’.. thanks in advance.. and btw I’m a fan of your awesome work on this website.. keep up the good work..

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

yes as of now there is no support for the flash! but as soon as it arrives, we will surely come up with the same!

  • nctunc

First of all thx a lot! But have u ever experienced that issue: when i want to turn my screen on (by right side button) it has a 1-2 second delay. Any chance to fix this? I am really dissapointed about that and consider to go back to original firmware. Any luck?

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

yes you can go back to the older version but to whichv ersion you wish to go to ?

      • nctunc

i would like to go original firmware. i guess its 2.2.1 froyo. but I’m really happy with the performance issue and other cool stuffs but screen delay is killing me. Whenever i turn my screen on 1 or 2 sec delay is really drive me crazy. i guess there is no luck to fix it but thx anyway. u rock!

        • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

Thanks buddy but u need to follow the respective inst. of 2.2.1 to go to the same.

  • CCS

Woo! Thx dude u helped me alot! Thx!

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

      thanks for your appreciation buddy!

  • Stijn

It works, not much difference with 2.3.3 but some bugs fixed

  • Nolan

I used this method to upgrade from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 and I wasn’t required to enter any language settings and all of my settings/files are still there (re-entering APN settings wasn’t necessary). My phone does say 2.3.4 though… o_O

How can I be positive I’ve REALLY upgraded?

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

have you checked in the Settings about the version?

  • Leo

for all having the RAMDUMP problem, this is the solution:
first, disconnect the usb-cable, after that, use the directions of RAVI.
(If the usb cable is still connected, the gio will boot into RAMDUMP mode,
if the usb cable is not connected, the gio will boot into RECOVERY mode)

  • Bevinb

    Hi Neal,

Thanks for your advise on updating to GB, I followed yr instructions and it worked a treat however… now I cannot get any data networks? Wifi and Blue Toot work but I can’t rcv emails or browse the web. I saw on a previous post someone had a similar prob that was solved by adding the APN which I tried to no avail.. I am at wits end with this bl**dy phone and am seriously considering throwing it in the bin and buying another brand!!!! Can you pls help? Thks.

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

you will have to configure the apn settings for configuring the data network!!

  • CornelisJoh

The description on how to get in the recovery mode is not correct! With Galaxy Gio you should not press the Volume Up key! To get in the recovery mode, you must only press the Home and the Power button at the same time.

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

      its mentioned in the article!

      • CornelisJoh

In the article it is mentioned that to get in recovery mode you should press Volume Up + Home + Power On. That may be true for Galaxy S, but it is _not_ true for Galaxy Gio. With galaxy Gio, you should only press Home + Power On.

  • Kamran Dodhy, Lahore, Pakistan

Thanks for such a detailed step by step tutorial. Everything worked fine for me. Infact it only took about 3 minutes to load and reboot. One thing I should mention, all my mail accounts, WiFi settings and installed programs were preserved. So I just checked the OS version, which confirmed to be 2.3.4 and I started using my phone right away. Thanks again.

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

yes you can proceed for the update!

      • wica33

great job dude, I love ur work, U guide me with the process tu update my Gyo, and it have been a hit from the first atempt, thanxx a lot!

        • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

          thanks for your appreciation buddy!

  • Vlad

    Thanks a lot!
    It works nice!

  • ttharpad

I read this tutorial, and I updated 2.3.4 firmware , but last step / the recovery mode / doesn’t work for me too. I got the screen error message. I shut down with out of the battery. Now that’s all right.

    THX !!

    • Cordless

You can enter the recovery mode by holding down the home and power buttons simultaneously (no need to hold down the volume up key).. then navigate using the volume key and select a menu using the home key..

  • Willie

    This doesn’t work for me
To get in to the recovery mode and to clear the cache first up you will have to turn off the phone and then long press the volume up key, press Menu as holding both the buttons press the power button to star
But i got 2.3.4 on my GIO, now hoping that the shut downs are gone

  • http://duniakuadalah-it.blogspot.com Esa Rijal M

Hmm, i’ve done with this, but i have any different in using ODIN, i was not put the tar file in Phone option, but i check the One Package and then select that tar file there. and voila it is really work …

    Thanks a lot guys

  • vahid

    Hi.
Thank you for this. but why there is no middle east version of gingerbread for this phone and samsung doesnt relrease it? what do you think?

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

no there is no specific update as of now!

  • chan

Just a question before flashing: (as i have seen from many other videos) does odin automatically put the phone in recovery to erase cache and data? or do I still have to enter recovery and manually wipe data and cache partitions? Thanks.

    • http://twitter.com/pradeepneela NeaL Pradeep

yes its good thing to do!
