How To Update Samsung Galaxy Gio S 5660 to Gingerbread XXKQ3 2.3.4 Firmware

Procedure to install Gingerbread 2.3.4 update in Galaxy Gio:

  • After downloading the Firmware Zip file for your Galaxy Gio S 5660, you will now have to save the same to your desktop. But after placing the same in your desktop, you will have to unzip the same so that all the tools in it can be unzipped. In the process of unzipping, you will be prompted to enter the password. At this point of time, enter the password as “androidadvices.com” without the inverted comas.

Galaxy Gio Enter Password

  • Once the files are unzipped, you will see the files which are mentioned in the below screen shot, please note that just in case any file is missing then you will have to re download the whole firmware again as the download wasn’t successful in this case.

Extracted Files Gio XXKQ3

  • Now, from the extracted files, open the Odin v 4.42 file as shown in the above extracted files and then a new window will be opening up as shown below,

Odin 4.42 Version

  • After this, keeping the Odin tool opened on the desktop, you will have to enter your phone in the download mode but before that you will have to completely switch Off your phone. The device can be put in the download mode by holding the Volume Down button + the Home key button (the middle button). While holding these both buttons, you need to switch ON your device. If you have successfully entered into the download mode then you will see a green screen which is shown below. Also, additionally note that if the device boots in the normal mode with the home screen then you will have to again switch off the device and retry the process and if despite retrying you are unable to get into download mode then you will have to fix the download mode error for your phone.

For all those of you who have been looking for a solution to change your firmeware, THIS IS IT! I used this to update my phone after giving up on changing the firmware language (therefore being able to access the real android market, not the Hi-Market) and to my surprise, all the Chinese unwanted apps were gone, and awesome ENGLISH ALTERNATIVES where there, including the REAL android Market!!!!!
    Couldnt be happier! thank-you!!!!!!!
**Note for the author, you should add this fact in your title, a lot of foreigners living in China are looking for a way to get rid of the Chinese firmware****

  21. Hi Neal,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply and await your advice.

    Cheers..

  22. Dear Neal,

My Gio was bought in Singapore. Its version froyo 2.2.1 and base S5660DXKC3 and Kernal 2.6.32.9-perf.

Could you advise me to which firmware version should I upgrade? Since the handset is sold in Singapore, I guess it would belong to Asian version. Currently, the phone language is English. My concern is that after flashing, would the phone still support English language as some of your fans say after the update the language becomes Russian.

Would very much appreciate your reply.

  30. I have tried everything with different versions of odin but odin does not find my phone?

  31. does this has anything to do with the model that I have, mine is Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660

  32. Neal Pradeep, I did not try that yet but I will try that and see what happens, anyother suggestions or help?

  33. guys i needhelp, i have download and extracted the files but after turning on the odin software.i turned on my mobile in downloading mode,1st i dont see the android logo just “downloading” writen, 2nd i waited for longbut odin is not doing anything.

  34. Me2, i have a problem with screen delay, i want to go back to v2.2.1 froyo.

  35. Just followed all steps as mentioned in your guide. Everything worked fine got it installed and everything, however my phone now just keeps rebooting. You see the shiny samsung letters in space, after that glowing Samsung letters. After that it just goes back to the shiny space letters and this keeps repeating

    what to do?

    • Sorry fixed it, apparently i forgot to wipe data memory! This is essential! Muchos gracias! Its great :D Now just figuring out how to connect to the internet again without using WIFI.. doesnt seem to work yet..

    • you can remove the battery and restart the device in the normal mode!

  36. I’ve just updated to XXKQ3 2.3.4 Firmware and followed your steps. Now my phone can’t detect my SD card after i wiped the data/factory and cache in recovery mode. Help needed!!!!!

    • Also when i select “mound sd card” , it shows sd card damaged. But when i connect the sd card to my laptop it recognizes without problem.

  37. May I ask if there’s any difference between Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660 and Samsung Galaxy Gio S5660?

Because mine says GT-5660 and if I go to settings – about phone – model number says GT-5660.

So I’m wondering if I can use your upgrade, because you emphasized a lot that the model name and the number must be the same.

    Thanks

  38. 1. beware that you have to enable the serial port in your pc’s bios (for most pc’s this is the standard bios setting but i forgot that i had disabled it and the ODIN software uses a virtual serial port, which relies on the windows serial port driver to work)

    2. the latest step is to go into recovery mode. beware that you probably need the home/menu button + power button. (using the volume up button as well will NOT get you in recovery mode but in ARMS mode.)

i was already running 2.3.3 and my phone was configured and had several apps installed. after following the steps as mentions in the guide, everything was working just fine. no need to reconfigure or reinstall (so far).

  39. My Phone is at RAMDUMP MODE only not at Recovery Mode during power up .

  40. thx friend, what a good how-to article,
but i got one question, u used the S5660XXKQ3, and i’ve found the S5660XXKQ6,
    is XXKQ6 better than XXKQ3?

  41. Thanks man….got the update done on my new Galaxy Gio!…Havent started using the phone regularly…so cant say what are the differences!…anyways… for gio… to go to recover mode…its just the home key + power on button!…

  42. Hi,

Got it working but only by checking One Package as Esa Rijal M wrote.
Seems to be working fine but is there any way to get scandinavian keyboard layout? ä, ö and å are missing.

    Thanks!

  43. I don’t understand the APN and MMS settings thing. Do I have to change it ? And when you update to 2.3.3 you have BOOT Phone PDA and CSC file. How come you only need the Phone file in this update ? Sorry for al the questions but I dont want to brick my phone :s

  44. WHAT IF IT GOES WRONG DID IT GOES WRONG TO SOMEBODY CUSE IM SCARED IF IT GOES WRONG ON MY UPDATE ANYBODY DID WELL OF WRONG PLEASE TELL ME I SHOULD DO IT OR NOT

  45. Great upgrade. Ran perfectly on my Australian Optus network locked GIO. Battery life is already looking much better, and I’ve gotten rid of the Optus bloatware.

    Two questions:
    1) Default home page when I press Home button is going to Screen 1 (whereas it was Screen 4). How do I fix that?
    2) I’ve lost the ability to have messaging skins, or has it moved under Android 2.3.4?

    • cleaar the cache and re apply the update!

      • Hi i have EXACTLY the same problem as this person. Home button now goes to screen 1 (was screen4) and i have lost ability to change message skins. I care more about the problem with the home screen button. I have cleared the cache and user data several times and reflashed the phone several times….BUT IT DOESN”T HELP.

Please help…this is beyond annoying, i really don’t know what to do.

        Please help.
        THank you.

      • you can add the home screens by pinching on the home screen!

        • yes, i have added more screens, but no matter what i do, when i hit home button it always goes to screen 1. I move my home screen to position 3 or 4, but no matter what…i press home button, always goes to screen 1. …Any other suggestions? i have re-flashed several times, cleared cache before and after re-flashing…is there any way to customize this option?

          Thank you.

  46. My Galaxy Gio 2.3.4 freezes every now and then .i.e., sometimes once a day. How do I downgrade to android 2.3.3

  47. hi neal.. I have upgraded to 2.3.4 and I’m really happy with it.. but I can’t seem to have Adobe Flash 10.3 support in browser as per your changelog.. also I have read many times that Adobe Flash doesn’t support Armv6 processors (the one we have in our galaxy gio).. so, can you please elaborate on this or please demonstrate if galaxy gio can really have ‘Browser flash’.. thanks in advance.. and btw I’m a fan of your awesome work on this website.. keep up the good work..

  48. First of all thx a lot! But have u ever experienced that issue: when i want to turn my screen on (by right side button) it has a 1-2 second delay. Any chance to fix this? I am really dissapointed about that and consider to go back to original firmware. Any luck?

    • yes you can go back to the older version but to whichv ersion you wish to go to ?

      • i would like to go original firmware. i guess its 2.2.1 froyo. but I’m really happy with the performance issue and other cool stuffs but screen delay is killing me. Whenever i turn my screen on 1 or 2 sec delay is really drive me crazy. i guess there is no luck to fix it but thx anyway. u rock!

  49. Woo! Thx dude u helped me alot! Thx!

  50. It works, not much difference with 2.3.3 but some bugs fixed

  51. I used this method to upgrade from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 and I wasn’t required to enter any language settings and all of my settings/files are still there (re-entering APN settings wasn’t necessary). My phone does say 2.3.4 though… o_O

How can I be positive I’ve REALLY upgraded?

  52. for all having the RAMDUMP problem, this is the solution:
first, disconnect the usb-cable, after that, use the directions of RAVI.
(If the usb cable is still connected, the gio will boot into RAMDUMP mode,
if the usb cable is not connected, the gio will boot into RECOVERY mode)

  53. Hi Neal,

Thanks for your advise on updating to GB, I followed yr instructions and it worked a treat however… now I cannot get any data networks? Wifi and Blue Toot work but I can’t rcv emails or browse the web. I saw on a previous post someone had a similar prob that was solved by adding the APN which I tried to no avail.. I am at wits end with this bl**dy phone and am seriously considering throwing it in the bin and buying another brand!!!! Can you pls help? Thks.

  54. The description on how to get in the recovery mode is not correct! With Galaxy Gio you should not press the Volume Up key! To get in the recovery mode, you must only press the Home and the Power button at the same time.

    • its mentioned in the article!

      • In the article it is mentioned that to get in recovery mode you should press Volume Up + Home + Power On. That may be true for Galaxy S, but it is _not_ true for Galaxy Gio. With galaxy Gio, you should only press Home + Power On.

  55. Kamran Dodhy, Lahore, Pakistan

Thanks for such a detailed step by step tutorial. Everything worked fine for me. Infact it only took about 3 minutes to load and reboot. One thing I should mention, all my mail accounts, WiFi settings and installed programs were preserved. So I just checked the OS version, which confirmed to be 2.3.4 and I started using my phone right away. Thanks again.

  56. Thanks a lot!
    It works nice!

  57. I read this tutorial, and I updated 2.3.4 firmware , but last step / the recovery mode / doesn’t work for me too. I got the screen error message. I shut down with out of the battery. Now that’s all right.

    THX !!

    • You can enter the recovery mode by holding down the home and power buttons simultaneously (no need to hold down the volume up key).. then navigate using the volume key and select a menu using the home key..

  58. This doesn’t work for me
To get in to the recovery mode and to clear the cache first up you will have to turn off the phone and then long press the volume up key, press Menu as holding both the buttons press the power button to star
But i got 2.3.4 on my GIO, now hoping that the shut downs are gone

  59. Hmm, i’ve done with this, but i have any different in using ODIN, i was not put the tar file in Phone option, but i check the One Package and then select that tar file there. and voila it is really work …

But it was happened before i read this tutorial. as far as i use it (4hrs), it is perfect but still the compass orientation is suck. Anyway i just wanna share..

    Thanks a lot guys

  60. Hi.
Thank you for this. but why there is no middle east version of gingerbread for this phone and samsung doesnt relrease it? what do you think?

  61. Just a question before flashing: (as i have seen from many other videos) does odin automatically put the phone in recovery to erase cache and data? or do I still have to enter recovery and manually wipe data and cache partitions? Thanks.

  62. thanks dude, you rock!

    • hey buddy, we are here to guide you, do let us know if you need further help as we will be more than happy to if we see you happy! :)

      • i found a problem with system music player, it couldn’t read tag from m4a/aac+ and couldn’t play it smoothly.
but that’s not a big problem for me :D

      • HEY, CAN I USE THIS UPDATE, EVEN IF HAVE A NETWORK LOCKED PHONE?
