Galaxy S I9000

How To Update Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000 with Extra Ordinary ROM v 3.2

Galaxy S ExtraOrdinary LogoFor all those who always wanted to go beyond the Stock ROMs then here comes the need for the Custom ROMs. So, we thought on let’s make flashing or upgrading with the same simpler with the simple to understand instructions which still most of the forums doesn’t come forward as there are enough number of people who wanted to taste their devices with these custom ROMs. So for all Samsung Galaxy users if you are facing issues like force close errors, laggyness of the device and the overall interface then here comes a custom ROM called the Extraordinary ROM for Galaxy S which is not only the best of the lot custom ROMs which are available but also is the ROM which makes device faster than any of the Stock ROMs which is available as of now.

Please note that you will have to strictly follow the instructions as mentioned in the due course of this article or else there will be a high probability that you may end up bricking up the phone. Also keeping in mind about your convenience and safety we will see a series of instructions which are broken into the different sections like pre upgrade instructions, enhancements which come up in this version and then followed by the actual procedure to update with the Extraordinary ROM 3.2 which is basically the Gingerbread 2.3.4 based ROM and is the most stable ROM as of now. The best part of this version of firmware is that

Please note that before we proceed we would like to tell you that you will have to root your phone and in the process of rooting the device you will be losing the warranty but not to worry as you can easily revoke the root access at any point of time as by doing so you can reclaim the lost warranty. The simple way to revert back to the stock one is just follow with any of the procedures to update your Galaxy S like the latest one XXJVR, XXJVP or even any other ROM so as to revoke the root access.

So let’s proceed for the instructions one by one and just in case if you face any issues then all you need to do is to just follow the instructions from the start so as to facilitate smoother firmware update and the installation of the custom ROM of Extraordinary 3.2 version. Though there is a new 3.3 version which has been launched but it has been found that it’s really a very unstable version.

Please note that this update is only meant for the phone with the model number Samsung Galaxy S GTI9000 and not for any other similar looking models or similar sounding models like Samsung Galaxy S I9000M or Captivate, Mesmerize or even other phones like Vibrant etc. If you still proceed to update the device then you may even end up bricking up your phone or some keys won’t be responding as per the functions which these keys are meant to do.

Note: You will have to reconfigure the APN settings after updating the firmware to access the data services and the services as all the Internet APN settings will be reset. You will have to contact your Service provider to get more info on the APN Settings. Not to forget also configure the MMS Settings. Also, we hold no responsibility if anything goes wrong which is an unlikely event if anything goes wrong. Most of the users forget this step and end up experiencing difficulties in accessing the internet after updating the phone.

    Hi,

This is the 1st time I am rooting my galaxy S GT I9000 though I had updated firmwares 5 times.

I flashed XXJVQ as per the procedure and rooted too. I copied the Extra ordinary v 3.2 packaage to my SD card. When I opened CWM manager, i couldnt see APPLY UPDATE.ZIP.
    I could see under APK’s –>Install APK–>Install an APK and under Updates–>Flash Update–>Flash an update.zip
I did Flash an update.zip but the ROM hasnt got installed.

Still my phone details says as below:

    Firmware version:2.3.4
    Baseband version: I9000XXJVQ
    Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9000XXJVQ-CL281085 se.infra@SEP-39 #2
    Build number: GINGERBREAD.XXJVQ

ALso I checked in SUPERUSER and for CWM, Root access was allowed in status.

    Pls guide.

I found 1 issue so far, LOCK SCREEN, when trying to use 4 way lock screen, and if you unlock it using it the MESSAGING unlock, it will freeze up. TRied multiple times, power cycled the phone, still no luck. only freezes up when using MESSAGING unlock section.

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 13, 2011 at 11:40 am

have you tried clearing the cache?

      • vicious

        August 13, 2011 at 1:22 pm

Yes, did all the steps above for the ROM but the lockscreen (4way lockscreen), the messaging section is acting up, ALSO, another problem I have found another problem, when I download a game on Market such as (GUERILLA BOB), i’ll get an error (ERROR DOWNLOADING “Guerilla BOB LITE”. There is insufficient space on the device, when I clearly have more than enough space. I got this error on multiple games, not sure, If I am doing anything wrong.

        SD card:
Total space 7.46 GB / Available Space 7.26GB

        USB Storage:
        Total space 5.64 / Available Space 1.87

        System storage:
        Available space 1.72GB

Anyone else having the same issue.?

        • vicious

          August 13, 2011 at 1:47 pm

OK thx Neal, I was able to fix (ERROR DOWNLOADING “Guerilla BOB LITE”. There is insufficient space on the device) by clearing out the cache on my third try. But the 4 WAY TAB LOCK SCREEN is still freezing up when I tried to unlock it using the MESSAGING unlock tab. Anyway, it is not a big deal for me, just wanted to give some feedback to help the community out.

Thanks for all GREAT TUTORIALS…this new EXtra ordinary ROM 3.2 is very smooth by the way, loving it.

    Hello Neal,
I have a galaxy S GT-I900T (the version with “T” is the one distributed in Mexico and I think Australia also); so is this suitable for this ROM?
A friend of mine is telling me that could there be hardware differences between I9000 and I9000T, eventhough after the first FLASH I did, the Model number says: GT-I9000 only without the “T” at the end.
Right now I have Ginger 2.3.4 XXJVP with UGJK3 modem.
BTW, according with I have found the “T” at the end is because the 3G band used in Mexico (850MHz).

Thanks in advance for your advice!

    August 12, 2011 at 4:41 pm

Oh yeah: it’s kind of funny thing: iGO finds my location (after 10-15 sec), while “nativ” google maps says: Your location is temporary unavailable… (!?)

(worked in 2.3.3 as I said – worked very fast)…. It’s like I’m doing circles :)) – just want good battery time and working gps, wifi,… be it in 2.2 or 2.3.3, 2.3.4, Extra 3.2…. I don’t know….. if gps wont work as expected I’ll go for Cyanogen or Darky… (had Cyanogen on G1 – worked like a charm: gps: few seconds, even inside buildings)

    Never-the-less: respect to your team!

    • Zorzi

      August 12, 2011 at 6:23 pm

      Hmm…

      3.2 ROM:

GPS… well… :/ – I’m inside of building and G1 (1st google phone) can find my position in no time, Galaxy sux at that… sorry to say.

Battery: drain, again – It is idle and going down by 1% every 20min or so… with everything off (flight mode) and sleeping… 2 running services, when I check: GB keyboard and (of course) Settings. So: nothing… What the heck is eating battery. It says: Display 50%, but the system has been on for such a short period , so it’s hard to say.

I think I’ll return to Froyo 🙂 – it worked (for me) great: no battery problem fast (everyone else were complaining :)) – maybe gps starts working again… or maybe some stable Darkys 7.5 or CM…. sorry to say: but i’ll try.

BTW: Your instructions are by far the best I have seen about Android – exact, almost impossible to fail. Keep up the good work!

        August 13, 2011 at 7:05 pm

        Zorzi

try battery calibrator, im facing the same problem, hope it will solve your problem
cause mine now is great after running battery calibrator

i noticed this when after fully charge once i pull out the plug, it goes down to 80 % in which when i update to
Extra 3.2 my battery is only in 80% where in my part i made a mistake.

        i overlook at this:
“This phone gives a solid battery life of over a day but for this you will have to ensure that you charge your battery to 100% before you proceed for updating with this firmware as if you proceed with the lesser battery life then you might get lower battery life and after which you will have to calibrate the battery so as to get better battery life for your device.”

        more power to androidadvices…

      • Zorzi

        August 13, 2011 at 5:27 pm

No problem – you convinced me! Really nice nice job your’re doing. Appreciated!

Now for Extra ROM 3.2: Things got more stabile.

1.) GPS “started” working – quite accurate now.

2.) BATTERY – went from 80% to 78% from last day ( cca. 15-20h) – well only phone signal was left on – all radio off, wirth occasional GPS testing through GoogleMaps and iGO. I guess there is no drainage like I had in 2.3.3.

I guess I might keep this one for a while: did not test it enough though (did not have time), but it seems stable: and gps works :)i

Very nice team you are: and extremly polite: that counts! – not many on the net like that attitude.

        Best Regards!

  22. Zorzi

    August 12, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Just installed ExtraOrdinary 3.2… Nice job!

I did it because of battery drain problems with 2.3.3 – which I installed on Froyo 2.2 which (for me) was fast, battery lasted 1-2 days (really!) – only thing that made me “move”: gps suddenly stopped working.

Now…. In 2.3.3 gps worked great (very fast locking satellites) – but battery life was poor (5 hours maybe?)… So I’m here with ROM 3.2 – based on 2.3.4 JVQ – I hope it does not drain battery faster as I write this 🙂

But gps is poor…. which was the point of moving from Froyo.

    August 12, 2011 at 1:46 pm

    Hi Neal,

There is one more option in “recovery mode”……i.e…”install zip from sdcard”. Should i be using this option. Also why does it give a msg saying cannot find update.zip when the ROM you have provide is named EXTRAordinary_3.2_(WIPE).zip?

    Thanks
    Abhijeet

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 13, 2011 at 4:24 pm

you can open cwm from applications and from there too u can choose the zip file to install directly.

  28. Abhijeet

    August 12, 2011 at 1:32 pm

    Hi Neal,

I tried flashing after going into the recovery mode. But its says “can’t update sdcard/update.zip”

I ve copied the extraordinary rom zip file to the root of my sdcard. What am i doing wrong here?

    Thanks

  30. prabhaher

    August 12, 2011 at 8:24 am

does this rom using the ext4 file system or the same rfs file system? one guy commented he has updated from XXJVR without any problem, do you recommend this? or is it always better to follow the instructions given above?

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 12, 2011 at 10:49 am

yes but for that you need to tweak a bit which we will come up with the same

      • prabhaher

        August 12, 2011 at 1:30 pm

i’m sorry neal, i’m not clear here,

do mean it uses ext4 file system and we can install from XXJVR too? where do we have to tweak it?

        • NeaL Pradeep

          August 13, 2011 at 4:23 pm

xxjvr and extraordinary rom are two different things. which one you wish to install with?

after googled a while, can solve the bluetooth problem, need to inactivated wifi and BT, then reboot, enable <bluetooth first, then wifi, and WORKS!

it is a XXJV(P)(Q)(R) firmwares bug

    cheers

    August 11, 2011 at 12:58 pm

    Hi Neal,

Updated to Extraordinary ROM yesterday. You have mentioned in your article that we get Titanium backup application along with this ROM. But i don’t seem to have it. Also the Clock Work Mod app has disappeared from my phone. Is that normal or have i done some mistake while updating? Also let me know that if i have to flash the ROM again do i have to go back to XXJVQ 2.3.4 Firmware.?

Otherwise the ROM is great. Good speed and extremely smooth.

    Regards
    Abhijeet

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 11, 2011 at 1:05 pm

      • Abhijeet

        August 11, 2011 at 2:43 pm

You mean i have to “apply update from sdcard” from recovery mode?

Last time after updating the ROM i had used these 2 options “wipe data/factory reset” and “wipe cache partition”
Do i do those steps again after updating??

        Thanks
        Abhijeet

        • NeaL Pradeep

          August 11, 2011 at 3:17 pm

1 – Battery holds an incredibly long time, even 3 days, run so smutly
2 – rom is very fast
        3 – GPS is gooooooood
4 – has a very bad disadvantage of angry birds, junga ,pottery, apshalt and a couple of games work for a minute and freeze it, so I returned to the xxjvq version.
        that s my rewiev

    • NeaL Pradeep

  61. Jimmy

    August 9, 2011 at 11:57 am

    Hi Neal
As evidenced by most queries in this post, for one already in XXJVR+Root, it seems tedious to reflash back to XXJVQ, Root it and then flash with this ROM. Question, will this ROM be available for XXJVR+ROOT soon? I don’t want to go through all the trouble and before I finish it you are already issuing us your splendid instructions on how to flash the ROM with XXVR, if you get my drift.

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 11, 2011 at 1:06 pm

no, as its a XXJVQ based ROM you will have to go via XXJVQ ROM only!!!
