Galaxy S I9000

How to Update Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000 with ICS 4.0.3 RC 4.2 Firmware

Galaxy S ICS LogoJust few days back we saw on how to apply the firmware of Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000 with the latest version of RC 4.1 ICS along with a separate article for Wi Fi fix and now an all new update has been pushed by developer dubbed as RC 4.2 version which promises to solve the bugs related to Wi Fi and Camera. Please follow the instructions strictly as we have observed that many users wanted to migrate / apply this update from some other custom firmwares, but please stick to the instructions carefully as mentioned in the article so as to facilitate smoother and safer firmware update.

Please note that this update is not an Official update released by Samsung Electronics and there is no ETA on by when there will be a Value Pack or ICS update for Galaxy S. There have been many fixes which this update ropes in which we have summed up in the change log section mentioned at the end of this article. We really thank the developer Paul Forde who has made a huge contribution in rolling out this One Cosmic ICS Custom ROM.

Caution: This update is not recommended for network locked devices.

Disclaimer: At Android Advices, we have made sure in all respects that all the information regarding the firmware update is mentioned correctly in this article. We hold no responsibility in any manner just in case if any damage happens to your Galaxy S GT I9000 which is a very unlikely event if you follow the instructions carefully.

Change log of RC 4.2

  • New fixed framework = wifi fix included(without blur issues)
  • New script to specifically set EFS permissions(hopefully fix people losing IMEI’s)
  • Reverted back to the ICS quick search
  • News & Weather widget is back!
  • Updated modem to JVU

As we always tell, backup all the data present in your phone with the help of below tips and not with the KIES as it doesn’t support SGS on this ICS build as it’s not an Official update.

SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Notes – Manually save the notes in your mail as these will be lost in the process of firmware update
Call Log – Call Log and Restore
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names

Minimum battery charge left in the phone should be at least 70% so as to ensure that device doesn’t get turned Off in the middle of firmware update.

So assuming that you have followed all the above mentioned instructions, you can now proceed to the next page where we will be checking out on how to update with ICS Android 4.0.3 firmware RC 4.2 version.

No Sim Toolkit and radio, which afaik, are common issues, as well as Memo. I’d like to ask, though, is the Mobile Tracker feature really not included in ICS anymore? Or am I just missing it?

Too bad Samsung is not officially releasing this firmware to i9000. It’s definitely worth having! Kudos to the geniuses who constantly work hard on this site. 🙂

I’ve been using this ROM for a few weeks now. it generally works great! it is noticeably slower though, sometimes frustratingly so. I wonder if this is just the hardware being freaked out by the requirements of ICS? it would be nice if there was a way to dumb down the visuals to save on processor power/battery.

I am eagerly awaiting your next release!

Hi, i have samsung galaxy s gt i9000, i have followed the instructions from your website and have upgraded my phone to ICS 4.0.3 RC 4.2 Firmware which i think is the latest, i am not happy with it, is there any other latest version that i should upgrade to or how can i go back to my original 2.3.3. the camera freezes the whole phone, every now and then i have to power off my phone. i think there are many things missing. there is no dieary, memo radio etc on this version. please suggest what should i do. look forward to hearing from you soon.

    • Devesh

      February 24, 2012 at 11:27 am

      dear mushraf,
the radio in ics r4.2 android 4.0.3 is still under development, i don’t know why there isn’t memo (same on my 4.2 ) so i downloaded “wizard memo” . But I don’t know why the camera won’t work as it does on mine. and to get back to android 2.3.3 you have to flash the rom . BUT it will wipe your phone.

    Hi Neela

Thanks for the help you have been providing, yet here is another scream for help!

What is your suggestion to resolve the issue whereby the SD Card is no longer recognized in RC4.2?

Also according to Change log of RC 4.2

New fixed framework = wifi fix included(without blur issues)

I wonder if Is this to fix the issue whereby the Wi-fi connection keeps dropping?

I am experiencing the issue whereby wi-fi connection keeps dropping every so often for apparent reason

    Many thanks

  44. Jacques

    February 15, 2012 at 7:38 pm

Hi Guys, I installed RC4.2 without any problems. However, after installation, my internet is not working. If I connect to a WiFi hotspot, the internet is working without issues. I updated the APN to the correct settings for the local carrier, but still no joy. I reverted back to XXJVU and then to Gamerz Rom using the same APN settings. On Gamerz Rom, the internet is working fine – so there is nothing wrong with the APN settings. I suspect the modem version used may not be functioning properly.

Please let me know if there is a setting I need to change or if this is a bug that will be addressed in a next RC version.

    Cheers, Jacques

I am following the Steps to install on my Samsung S GT- I9000 but while in recovery mode the option to “install zip from sd card” > “choose zip from sd card” > is not listed! Which I imagine is due to the fact is not detecting the zip files copied to the phone.

Any suggestions how I can get the device to detect the zip files in order to install the zip?

So far I tried to have the zip files in the root of SD card, also in a newly created folder and even on a folder that is visible while in recovery mode. In all these different locations the files are not being detected
    – While in root of SD card they are not detected
    – While in new created folder, this folder is not being detected while recovery mode
    – Copying this new created folder to a folder that is listed while in recovery mode still doesn’t work because again this new folder is no being detected.

    Any suggestions?

    Many thanks

i have upgraded my galaxy s to ics 4.2 using the instructions and it all went very smoothly. a small issue with internet connectivity which was rectified when i specified ‘deafult’ instead of ‘internet’ for the APN name. the only problem i have is that it can’t seem to see my 16GB SDHC card. do you have any ideas why this might be or how i might fix it?

This was my first try on rooting and flashing with ICS. It was a little glitchy, but now it works – thank you the FW.

I’m missing Google Maps (can’t install it from the Market) and FM Radio; 3rd party FM Radio app also does not work since it does not detect the FM module.

The Maps issue was due to Market’s country restrictions (solved with Market Enabler).

    Hi Neela,

I am using ICS RC4.1 which i found is little laggy than its previous version. Has this issue been fixed in RC4.2 with other stability fixes.

And can i directly apply RC4.2 over currently working RC4.1 bu just doing wipe factory/rest and wipe cache and install from zip.
