Galaxy S I9000

How To Update Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000 with Xtra Long Battery Amestris 2.3.4 ROM

Amestris ROM LogoTill now for all those who has seriously suffered from the low battery or fast draining trauma on all their Galaxy S GT I9000 handsets then here comes the revolution wherein you can now enjoy the King Size battery life as all thanks to the Amestris who came up with his own ROM which not only looks visually appealing but also is stable with the best battery backup ever along with the highest Quadrant ranks ever as this ROM is very lite in size but big in the list of capabilities. So, let’s first check out on how you can update with this ROM.

Special Instructions for all those who are on Custom ROM including the ones who are on the “Extra ordinary ROM 3.2”

If you are on the Extra Ordinary ROM then you will have to first up get into the recovery mode and then you will have to clear the cache, wipe the data and also you need to go to the advanced options so as to clear the Dalvik Cache too. Once you do so you will see that many of the options like Clock Work Mod and other tools will be wiped off from your phone.

Special Instructions for all those who are on Firmware Versions apart from Gingerbread 2.3.4 XXJVR version

If you are on any other version apart from the XXJVR then you will have to ensure that you need to first up update your phone to this version of XXJVR 2.3.4 version which is a must before proceeding to the update. You can go to the below mentioned link to update the phone’s firmware update to the XXJVR 2.3.4 irrespective of your current firmware version. Please note that you need to follow the below mentioned two procedures before proceeding to the update.

Procedure to Update Galaxy S GT I9000 with XXJVR 2.3.4 version

Procedure to Root Galaxy S GT I9000 on XXJVR 2.3.4 version

Please note that If you are not sure of whether the version you are On is XXKG6 or not then you need to head to the path from your phone which is Settings > About Phone > Firmware Version where you will find the version of Android OS where it will show XXJVR 2.3.4. If it shows any other version apart from this, then you will have to follow the above procedure. If you have the rooted XXJVR 2.3.4 version installed in your phone then you will find a Super User application too. If you are unable to find the same then that means that the device is not rooted and needs to be rooted which you can do by following the procedure in the above link.

So, now once you are done with the above instructions carefully you are now all set to proceed for the pre upgrade instructions which is very important when we upgrade the firmware or install the new firmware on the Phone. Also, most importantly note that proceed or apply the following steps only on the Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000 Phone and to no other similar looking phones like even on GT I9000T or I9000M as that will brick the phone completely or partially.

The biggest advantages of this ROM is that its fast and also it provides an amplified music experience as just in case if you wanted to have louder music output from this phone then this is the right firmware for you as it gives the best of the lot output sound and also the another biggest advantage is that it comes along with the extra long battery backup which you have always dreamt of.

Note: You will have to reconfigure the APN settings after updating the firmware to access the data services and the services as all the Internet APN settings will be reset. You will have to contact your Service provider to get more info on the APN Settings. Not to forget also configure the MMS Settings. Also, we hold no responsibility if anything goes wrong which is an unlikely event if anything goes wrong. Most of the users forget this step and end up experiencing difficulties in accessing the internet after updating the phone.

    ok,
I’m a bit new to this and had this query about the naming conventions of the firmwares like XXJVP / XXJVQ / XXJVR etc. Could someone explain me what exactly is this naming convention and who are producing these firmwares. And how many firmwares are there for galaxy S GT I 9000. I mean besides the samsung’s own current 2.2. 2.3.2 versions.

    Hi neal,

    i have 2 questions …

1 : can we install this ROM having a custom KERNEL ? base firmware is XXJVR but my kernel is speedmod ? so can i just proceed ahead to have the ROM ?

2 : can we install this ROM on ext4 filesystem ? i have XXJVR base speedmod kernel lagfixed with filesystem and SYSTEM converted to ext4 ?

can i install this ROM ?>

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 21, 2011 at 10:57 pm

yes you can but for this you need to flash with the ROM first and then with the kernel!

    August 18, 2011 at 7:11 pm

I cannot apply the ext4 manager…it says cf-root kernel was not detected.it’s also state in won’t work properly.why is it so?would it be a problem?

Go to settings, manage apps n clear the data as well as cache of the market.

      • Tim

        August 17, 2011 at 12:57 pm

Still having the same problem. I’ve read from XDA-Developer site that Market does not recognize 3rd-party ROMs.
        Is this accurate?

    August 16, 2011 at 11:45 am

1.Thanks for all the wonderful options you present on this website. However, I have a continuing problem with Amestris 2.3.4 ROM and the loss of all my calendar data. Clearly Amestris is not compatible with Kies and you have kindly suggested an alternative backup prior to the upgrade. Restoring from this backup returns the phone to its previous state, with all my data back BUT now, of course, Amestris is gone! How do I restore just the data without the whole system? (and Titanium is not available in 2.3.4 XXJVR)

    2. Since updating (via Kies) from 2.2 to 2.3.3, my phone has lost half its signal sensitivity (so phone is useless in poor reception areas), and none of the later upgrades have fixed this. Any ideas?

    Thanks

      August 16, 2011 at 9:59 am

have you converted to ext 4 format from CWM!

      • Sach

        August 16, 2011 at 10:49 am

I can’t see that option in the CWM Manager V2.0. Please excuse my ignorance 🙂
        Thanks

        • NeaL Pradeep

          August 16, 2011 at 10:58 am

you will have to download ROM Manager from market to get the CWM back!

        • Sach

          August 16, 2011 at 11:03 am

ok so i d/l’d ROM Manager but still don’t know how to convert to ext4

          • NeaL Pradeep

            August 16, 2011 at 3:18 pm

it will be there in the cwm one!

        • Sach

          August 16, 2011 at 11:15 am

CVM was already there after I installed the ROM, I didn’t need to get it back.

      • Jimmy

        August 16, 2011 at 8:20 pm

Yeah, CWM does not have it but if if you go to applications EXT4. Click on it and ignore some warning about not there being CF-Root Kernel, scroll down and will see Convert to ext4 and the rest is automated

        • Sach

          August 17, 2011 at 3:31 pm

I’m still confused, is there like a tutorial for it. Is EXT4 an application in itself, found in the application drawer?

          • NeaL Pradeep

            August 17, 2011 at 3:36 pm

yes you can convert to ext4

    Hi Neal
As usual good job in directing us how to go about it. Flashing this ROM was a breeze for me. However Kernal showed XXJVQ instead of XXJVR at Settings-> about phone. I flashed the Modem file of XXJVR on it’s own via Odin and now Kernal version correctly reads 2.6.35.7-I9000XXJVR-……. Also, having run this ROM for over fifteen hours now, I honestly don’t see much change in my battery life. Maybe my usage is already at optimum battery life because when I went to sleep at midnight yesterday my battery was at 98%, and this morning at 6.30am the battery had 93% more or less what I normally get with XXJVR. Please note, I sleep with WiFi OFF, GPS OFF, SYNC OFF but 3G ON. I wish others would tell of their experiences here

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 15, 2011 at 7:54 pm

sure jimmy the feedback has been passed to the ROM Developer and the same will be rectified in the next version!

    Hello,

Very good article. I just rooted my phone for the first time and flashed it with this ROM – works great.

One question though, If i wanted to unroot my phone and return to stock firmware, how is this done?

    Thank you.

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 16, 2011 at 10:46 am

you need to clear everything from the recovery mode and then you can apply any other updates like XXJVR, XXJVP etc.

      • Luke

        August 18, 2011 at 4:26 pm

By clear everything, what do you mean? Cache etc then use odin to install xxjvr again?

    August 14, 2011 at 5:45 pm

Hi Neal, first of all thank you for the variety of ROMs you are delivering to us. I have updated with this custom ROM but I find it the most laggy ROM I have used so far. Sometimes when I select a contact I wait 4-5 seconds until the contact is opened. Another thing is that in the Quadrat Ranks I get a score of 1500, not even close to the score you got in the screenshots. Even though I see people very happy with the UI and the battery life no one said anything about the performance. Is it normal to be so laggy or are there any performance tweaks inside this ROM because I looked in EDT Tweaks and found nothig.

    Hi Neal,

Updated to Amestris Rom today after going back to XXJVR from extraordinaty rom…….Find it a bit sluggish at times. Also my quadrant score shows only 1518 unlike the 2749 u hv shown. I followed ur instructions to the T. Also wiped the cache after updating the ROM. Should i also do a clear data and factory reset for better performance…..??

    Thanks
    Abhijeet

hi could you please tell me if this would work with an MIUI 1.8.12 ROM, if not then what would be the best process to install this without loosing all my data etc

    thanks

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 17, 2011 at 9:58 am

no, you need to strictly follow the instructions to update with this ROM,.its not recommended to update directly from MIUI!

  23. FallenZion

    August 14, 2011 at 2:54 pm

How long does the battery last comparing to XXJVR 2.3.4? I like the idea of a better battery but when I updated with the Extra Ordinary ROM I had various conflicts from applications like Viber, Tango and so on because the ROM kept closing the applications and they couldn’t sync in the background and I could’t see any contact online. Do you have any idea if this ROM has the same problems?

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 17, 2011 at 9:59 am

COMPARED TO XXJVR, it lasts around 30-40% more! there are some minor bugs but are not major! you can proceed to update the same!

  24. craig

    August 14, 2011 at 1:06 pm

Can you tell me if this will work using the latest miui 1.8.12 rom, or what is the procedure to replace?

  25. Prabhaher

    August 14, 2011 at 12:50 pm

A much better Rom.. Nice UI, more customizable and very fast too,
Android Market is working fine as usual.

    thank you neal… good work…

    Hi Neal,

    Hey Neal,

Once again thanks for the good work. Just a small query , I am currently on Extra Ordinary ROM and what i understand from this article is that 1st one has to move to XXJVR but one of the screenshots for this ROM is showing version XXJVQ…..??

    Can u kindly correct me.

    Thanks

            August 20, 2011 at 10:43 am

which rom you wish to change to now?

      • Vibushan

        August 20, 2011 at 3:00 pm

Just curious. I installed the ROM that you have provided. Found an updated version of Amestris, thought i’d try that out. And is it just me or am I finding that there is a lot of memory used by this ROM? When I tried playing angry birds, within 2 minutes, a popup appeared saying “very low memory left. This application may close without warning” (not exactly the same words though. This hasnt appeared before. Should I do something about the Dalvik cache? If so, can you give me the procedure. Thank you very much!
