How To Update Samsung Galaxy S II I9100 to KIES Gingerbread XXKG5 Release

Galaxy S2 LogoWith frequent beta updates if you are still wondering on with what version you need to update your phone then we will help you in picking the right version for your phone which is none other than XXKG5 Gingerbread 2.3.4 version which is the KIES release for the Galaxy S2 users in Poland and comes with the native Poland CSC. It’s interesting to see that still the Video talk integration hasn’t been included in this update as well. We can only hope that in the coming versions or say in the Android’s Gingerbread 2.3.5 version will surely come with the Gtalk’s video capability.

If you have not got the update or are not from the Poland or just in case if you wish to update with this KIES release then we will help you to update the firmware manually and not from the Odin as with the help of Odin sometimes users face issues like firmware not getting downloaded and host of other issues but with the help of Odin there are not much of issues which have been reported and also its very simple to update your phone by using the Odin flash tool which we will see in the due course of this article on how we can use it.

Last time we saw other Gingerbread versions like XXKG6 and other versions but this version of the XXKG5 is the KIES release and is an official release from the Samsung. The best part of this update is that it’s a Global update and not a Poland specific update. So, be it an Australia, US or India, each and every user of Galaxy S2 GT I9100 can proceed to update their device with this. Please make sure that you follow each and every instruction which is mentioned in this article or else there is a high probability that you may even brick the phone for which we should not be held responsible for.

Please note that this update is only meant for the phone with the model number Samsung Galaxy S2 GTI9100 and not for any other similar looking models or similar sounding models like Samsung Galaxy S I9000M or Captivate, Mesmerize or even other phones like Vibrant etc. If you still proceed to update the device then you may even end up bricking up your phone or some keys won’t be responding as per the functions which these keys are meant to do.

Note : You will have to reconfigure the APN settings after updating the firmware to access the data services and the services as all the Internet APN settings will be reset. You will have to contact your Service provider to get more info on the APN Settings. Not to forget also configure the MMS Settings. Also, we hold no responsibility if anything goes wrong which is an unlikely event if anything goes wrong.

what was your default firmware version?

        November 16, 2011 at 10:50 am

        It was 2.3.3.

The version that comes with Samsung S2 in India. I purchased the same in Sep 2011 and have no idea about other details.

I updated the same to 2.3.4 and was able to do it with the help of your post in this website. Have ODIN3 but need other files to restore the version.

After i updated my SG S2 with this firmware my camera now has a 1 second delay to take pictures ( 1 second delay after the shutter button is pressed). As soon i press the shutter it seems to take the picture with the shutter sound but it does not. it flashes with shutter sound then about 1 second, then that’s the only time it takes the picture ( two panels closes down in the middle, and then takes the picture and it on storage)

    Anyone notice this?

before, i can take quick pics without waiting for a second. Now i miss taking good pictures.

    please advise.
I’m from canada and with Bell Mobility.

Hey, first of all thanks for great posts. I’ve just updated to xxkh3 (with your guide) but I want to go back to xxkg5 as it is official and I want to try some stuff on it.

Is it ok to do downgrade like that? as I loaded the pit file for xxkh3 I am not sure.

    Thanks a lot

      September 15, 2011 at 2:42 am

      PIT = u1_02_20110310_emmc_EXT4.pit
      PDA = CODE_I9100XXKH3_CL479037_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5
      PHONE = MODEM_I9100XXKH3_REV_02_CL1050544.tar.md5
      CSC = GT-I9100-CSC-MULTI-OXAKH3.tar.md5

When you select the pit file the re-partition should be checked mark automatically.
Also check mark Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time. Along with this check mark Phone Bootloader.

Note : Before flashing the ROM take the backup of the internal SD card . After backups done format the internal SD or use the Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset > and then select Format USB storage option and then do a complete format of the internal SD card. After rebooting back to normal mode switch back to reovery option ( Press and hold Vol Key (+) and Home Button and Power button. Coming to the recovery console . Do a wipe use data and wipe cache partition. Then try to update with new ROM .
You will never get issue with boot loop or bricking the SGS II.

      • NeaL Pradeep

        September 16, 2011 at 12:14 pm

Nothing will be selected automatically first of all and if at all it gets selected then you need to unselect the re partition!

Hi, Will this firmware KG5 fix the ‘yellow tint screen on the left hand side’ issue?

  28. Sahitya Sahay

    August 23, 2011 at 4:45 pm

if one has to use ODIN to update to KG5 then whats the difference in getting this update or any of the newer unofficial updates. cant this be done through KIES (india)
i am from mumbai. i have KF3 version. is it too outdated? i am having a slight issue with this software -when i unlock my screen there appears to be certain distrubance and grey lines before the image of screen lock shows. its only for few seconds but annoying enough.
if i update the software will this issue be resolved?

Hi.mate ive a dumb as question but its gotta be asked.I wanted to update my 2 sgs and downgrade my sgs2 from xxkg6 to this cos its the official. All of a sudden the sgs link disappeared so i used the sgs2 link instead thinking they cant be that different.Ive flashed and flashed so its nothing new to me but never used conflicting firmwares against phone models like i91000 kg5 in an sgs and next thing i knew i had 2 (not just 1)hard bricked sgs i9000 phones and now im to scared to try it with my sgs2.Are they really that different that ive bricked them both by using an sgs2 firmware?!. or has there been some other hidden problem?.Please feel free to call me an idiot as i think ive earned it.Im keen to have kg5 but cant afford a new sgs2 if the same thing happens.cheers.

Bit hard now that there are bricked.Dont turn on.No download mode or recovery.Nothing.Hard bricked. When i plug them in the computor says it cant recognise the hardware so cant install anything and obviously odin is a no go.I cant beleive this has happened 2 times thats why im worried about my s2.I thinkin maybe xxkg5 insnt that compatable with sgs1 as the las 2.3.4 i saw for the sgs1 was jvq.

    1. I have updated to 2.3.5 using your instructions and verified that update was successful
( type in the code as “*#1234#”).

    2. However, I have not reset my phone as you said we should do
(Since there is a cache memory of the previous firmware gets stored in the device, you will have to clear the same and which can be done by performing the full reset by dialing the short code *2767*3855# and then you will see that all the cache is cleared successfully.)

    3. I didn’t wipe it as as i saw my apps and data intact so why take pain of re-installing.

    4. Is my SGS2 in danger because i haven’t wiped my phone?

    Please let me know….

Thanks a ton for your support.

    Hai Neal

    Thanks for this article.

I would like to ask you some questions.
1st of all I just bought the phone yesterday in Singapore. I connected it to PC with Skies on. When I try to update the software, It said something like “your firmware is the latest one for Singapore”. The android version that I have is 2.3.3 with baseband version I9100DXKF1. THe build number is GINGERBREAD.XWKF1. At first I did not believe that this is the latest version so I proceeded the upgrade stated in this article. However when I tried to open Odin, it didn work. Instead the screen appeared and disappeared straight away.

Could you give me an advice please?

    Thanks again!

    Hi !
I have upgraded to XXKG5 and it went nicely without any problem. But when I ran Quandrant Standard Benchmark, I got 2800 whereas in XXKG6, I used to get 3200-3300. Moreover, the battery only lasts for 7-8 hrs max on normal usage. Is it standard or there is some problem with the setting ? I am also using Juice Defender to increase the battery life but to no avail. Please help.
Also, please let me know if there is Cyanogenmode 7 available for S2 and what are its advantages over standard ROM.

    Thanks in advance.

I tried that but still didnt work.

In end, factory reset and re download the file and re upgrade, etc. Not sure if it is a problem with going from KG6 to KG5, in case anyone else finds this issue.

    Hi NeaL,

I followed your article to upgrade my S2 to KG6, is there a need to install this update (which seems to me to be a ‘downgrade’ to a lower firmware version)?

    Tks for clarifying!

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 13, 2011 at 4:34 pm

yes, its a downgrade version! as its a KIES Release!

  53. ac

    August 11, 2011 at 11:46 am

After following the procedures above, I successfully updated my sgs2 to XXKG5. One thing I noticed in this update is that when th ephone is connected to usb or charger, it will show a message “Info: Battery disconnected”. In the notification bar there is no indication that battery is being charged.

    • NeaL Pradeep

        August 11, 2011 at 11:10 pm

Here’s a follow up. After inserting the sim and sd cards my phone worked normally when connected to usb and charger. I can’t think of a reason yet why charging didn’t work without sim and sd card. I did not experience the same in the previous updates I made with the phone.

        • NeaL Pradeep

          August 13, 2011 at 4:54 pm

I updated my Samsung Galaxy SII to 2.3.4 KG5. It worked perfectly and my Swpe is working much much better now. Also the auto-brightness seesm to be behaving itself. In general it is much nippier, or maybe that is psychological, as the GSII is itslef a fabulous machine.

Thanks a lot Neal Pradeep. Really appreciate your work. How Samsung KIES sucks. I managed to almost brick my phone using it.
It is your ODIN and very helpful video which helped me get out of this mess.

Just a small mention. The ODIN 1.85 with this article seems to give some Korean error.
I used the ODIN downloaded with your other article of 2.3.4 (XXKG6) and it worked fine.

Also would like to mention that at some places in this article you have mentioned this firmware as 2.3.3 or was it a typo which has now been corrected.

    Thanks once again.

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 11, 2011 at 10:54 am

    August 8, 2011 at 10:44 am

Recently, I have updated my SGSII with KG3 as suggested by you, post which if i connect my phone with laptop and open Kies, the kies gives a message that “This version of the Device can not be updated”
    Current Firmware Version: PDA:KG3 / PHONE:KG3 / CSC:KG3 (KOR)

Need to know the procedure to avoid this problem, of atleast the procedure to return back to original software version on the phone so that i can get automatic updates on kies in place of a manual look out for the latest version and everytime a manual upgrade of my phone.

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 8, 2011 at 10:52 am

it depends on the update which you are on!! if kies comes out with a successor update then you can apply with the same!

For temporary fix, i install back to my old xxkg6.

        Hi there,

I am having the exact same problem, phone keeps going throught the samsung screen again and again.

        • Dexson

          August 15, 2011 at 12:22 am

We are not getting any error while updating. In odin it says “PASS”. when the phone reboot after that, it stuck in the galaxy s2 logo and keeps rebooting again and again into the logo. the phone didnt manage to boot into the main homescreen at all.

          • NeaL Pradeep

            August 15, 2011 at 1:03 am

re apply the update after restarting the device and computer!

          August 15, 2011 at 3:54 pm

Thanks for your reply. I am still having the same problem after I restarted.

To be more specific, it is getting stuck when I am trying to go from KG6 (Frankenstein_GT-I9100_XEU_I9100XXKG6_I9100XEUKD1_I9100XXKG6) to a previous firmware.

But if I reapply KG6, it boots normally.

Just want to inform that the PDA downloaded form the Galaxy S2 XXKG5 Gingerbread 2.3.4 Package was not repacked for ODIN. As such I can’t flash with ODIN. All I get were boot, cache, factoryfs, hidden, modem, param.lfs, sbl and zImage.

Could you please repacked them for PDA?

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 8, 2011 at 11:35 am

odin is separately being given in the article!

      • Joe

        August 8, 2011 at 8:05 pm

I know…I have Odin too…but what I mean is that the zip files do not contain PDA, Modem and CSC files.

Instead it contains boot, cache, factoryfs, hidden, modem, param.lfs, sbl and zImage files of which cannot be flash with Odin.

Odin needs PDA, Modem and CSC files for flashing. Please clarify.

So, I’m a little confused, is it 2.3.4 or 2.3.3?? I will wait to update my GS2 until you reply. Also, my device is I9100DDKE4 with build number XWKF3, should there be any problems if I update my device with XXKG5 2.3.4 Package?? Thanking you in advance.
