So, finally time has come to tell you guys that Gingerbread 2.3 has arrived for Samsung Galaxy S I 9000 and you will be further happy to know that you will now be in a position to install the same on your phone effortlessly. Just read the instructions carefully before flashing your device.
Important Instructions:
1. Ensure that you are having Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000 as the firmware is only for this phone and not for any other similar phones like Captivate, mesmerize Fascinate, Epic, I 9003 etc though that might look similar.
2. Back up all your data including messages, contacts and also all the third party applications which you have either installed from Android Market Place or from any other sources.
3. It is very important to enter in the download mode before flashing the firmware in your phone, if you cannot enter into download mode then you can solve this bug from here.
4. The things which you will be needing while flashing is Samsung Galaxy S I9000 phone, micro USB cable,Odin v1.3, Gingerbread 2.3.2 Android Firmware and PIT 512 file which have to be downloaded.
5. Irrespective of whichever may be the current stock version like 2.2 or 2.2.1 or even XXJPY, XWJS3, you can update with this Gingerbread version. Also, additionally many might have installed Voodoo lag fixes in your device, so even with this you can flash your device. Also, read the instructions fully once and then proceed to flash as you will be well versed with the steps.
6. PLEASE SELECT ONLY 512 PIT and not any other PIT like 802 or 803 etc.

Hi Neal, OK so I upgraded in a moment of madness to Android 2.3.2 using your method. It all worked fine. However, I now find that losing Kies is much more of a pain in the neck than I thought. Samsung have released 2.3.3 but Kies although recognising my phone wont update it.
How do I get back to a version that Samsung supports and will update?
Thanks,
Gordon

DO NOT UPGRADE!!
THIS VERSION EATS BATTERY. THE PHONE WILL NEED CONSTANT RECHARGING.
+ THERE IS A SERIES BUG THAT PREVENTS SSL HANDSHAKING, PREVENTING SYNC WITH OUTLOOK.
THIS VERSION SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN RELEASED.
NOTHING IN THIS VERISION IS WORTH THESE PROBLEMS.

People
I have a Galaxy S I9000 with 2.1-update 1 and want to upgrade. I have tried using Kies to do this but it says it is ‘locked’ If I type *#7465625# then all the lock status’s are OFF so I am sure it is not SP locked.
Samsung say I have to take it to one of their service centres but this is a 120mile round trip!!
My question is – will your procedure above upgrade this phone.
NeaL Pradeep
September 2, 2011 at 5:17 pm
you need to update with the XXJVR 2.3.4 edition as that is the latest version!
Paul
September 7, 2011 at 2:12 am
Further research into what ‘locked’ means seems to imply that the version of Android I have (2.1) is a ‘special’ T-Mobile version and they do not have a ‘special’ version above 2.1. The phone shows no indication that it has any features/apps/stickers that are T-Mobile specific so what exactly is this version and how is it different to Vanilla 2.1?
Can I backup the version of Firmware I have first so I can put it back on if things go wrong?
NeaL Pradeep
September 7, 2011 at 5:55 pm
why you need to do the backup, you can download and apply the firmware anytime from here.
Paul
September 11, 2011 at 1:06 am
Neal
Not sure what you mean by that? Are you saying that you have the T Mobile ‘locked’ firmware on here like I currently have? If so then what is it called? For info, my phone reports that it has Firmware 2.1 update 1, Baseband I9000XXJM1, Kernal 2.6.29 umts_scm@S1-BUILD05 #2, Build number ECLAIR.I9000XXJM1. What does that mean?!
NeaL Pradeep
September 12, 2011 at 10:34 am
you can apply the XXJVR update!
Paul
September 14, 2011 at 4:50 am
Neal
What does that mean! Is the XXJVR the ‘locked’ T Mobile version? How can I find out what each of these types of Firmware are?
NeaL Pradeep
September 15, 2011 at 12:04 am
No, XXJVR is not the locked one, you need to install the XXJVS 2.3.5 version !!

Dear bro,
I have seen ur latest update on the forum about the firmwire Extra Ordinary ROM v3.4 … All the best wishes.
My doubt is now am having the firmwire 2.3.2 XXJVE (which I thought to be the latest, but now only came to know ts too old …)
Shall I update to this latest one? (After updating to Gingerbread XXJVR 2.3.4 Firmware , as read from your article) But can I do it directly from XXJVE to XXJVR 2.3.4 ? or first 2.3.3 then 2.3.4 …etc?
If so;
1. Does it require Rooting … etc? I simply don’t like to root or do complicated surgeries on my Phone. But I enjoy Flshing the ROM.
2. Saw that all my Internal SD will be formatted … I would like to keep the gallery in the phone and don’t want it to get formatted…
3. Above all, I want my phone to be with the latest firmwire, bugfree, enhanced ROM and Battery backup and Total stunning performance… So I want 2.3.4 xtra ordinary rom…
I know the question is lil idiotic… but pls help me and suggest which firmwire I should update now…
Thanks in advance…

Hi,
The first step of starting the phone in download mode doesn’t work for me. Mine is a UAE handset (GalaxyS- i9000).
This device didn’t come with the market app. Recently I have managed to get market app by following a process which involves dialing *#272*XXXX#.
When I press the volume down + home key and switch on the phone, nothing special happens. The phone simply starts as it does normally.

Hi, yes I have I think, I’ve changed the APN address and now its working fine. But the problem I find now is that the battery ran out so fast Im not use if this is normal or I’ve done something wrong. Before update it used to last me 1-2 days and thats with texting and all but now only last 8 hours. >_<
The phone is running faster than it was but if the battery wont last I would like the old version back. But will I be able to do that?
Please help with regards

Hi Neal, It is really good to see that your instructions have worked perfectly the first time for so many users, unfortunately, I am stuck badly with my first upgrade and need your help badly. I did the upgrade as per your instructions but with the 512 PIT option(it did not work without it the first time without it) but after the successful completion, the phone is not switching on at all. I waited for more than 5 minutes and then tried manual start but no good. the phone is just dead now.
please can you confirm if there is a way to bring it up live again?
thanks in advance.

Hi Neal,
Again bad experince with people like you. Who share the ideas but protect them Code. Asked many people about code and always answer here and there or botom or up. All is fuck. If you protect then write code clearly. I have waisted my three hours. May be never come accrose this side again. And if i see your name then may go ahead without any paying attention.

Hi. I have just updated my Samsung Galaxy S through Samsung Kies. And my current version of my firmware is
PDA:19000BOJS5
PHONE:19000XXJPY
CSC:190000GDTMJS6
BUILD INFO:2011.02
These updates were run by default through connecting the USB cable and open the Samsung Kies. So I am not sure whether my firmware version is the lastest version or not. Please let me know whether I am on the right track. Thank You.

Hello! Your tutorial is the best! I have an SGS I9000. Firmware is 2.1-update. Build number is Eclair.JPJG8 Question is, is it safe to proceed? I took it to our local Samsung service center. They were willing to upgrade it but they told me there was the risk that it won’t switch on again, hence, DEAD PHONE. They say it happens rarely but when it does, there is nothing you can do about it. Is it true? I really want to upgrade my phone but that so-called fact is giving me second thoughts. Please advice. Thanks!

Hello Neal. Thanks for the post. Really helpful. I just upgraded to 2.3.3 XXJVO and it’s working perfect. The only problem is that now on the home screen, there are only 2 shortcuts available at the bottom of the home screen (only Phone and Applications instead of also Contacts and Messaging that where there before). Is there a way to add them there as well or did something go wrong with the upgrade? They were really helpful where they were before..
Thanks, Kyris.

hey neal,
thanks so much for the tutorial. it’s a HUGE help!
i bought my phone directly from koreo and has not had any support from samsung on how to update it. i was wondering since my phone does not connect to the original kies to backup my data when i update to gingerbread will i lose all of my apps, contacts etc in the update and have to reinstall everything? i understand settings will all be lost, but not being able to use kies on it has really crippled my ability to back much up.
thanks again

Hey Neal,
I found that the proxy settings are not available on the gingerbread update. Is there any app that you can recommend (free app). I looked at ASProxy but it is $5.99 (I think) and I want to connect to my University Wireless. I used to connect it when I had Froyo 2.2 though apps were restricted. Can you name an app that can allow apps access as well?
Thanks

Thanks a lot for the update. I’m new to android and i did this within 4 days of my purchasing the new phone. Thats only because you have explained it in such easy steps and have given proper hyperlinks to download files that are needed. Never seen such a complete instruction set before. Kudos. Thanks for the video just updated my phone. It works great. I have one question though, I can’t seem to open the specific areas in the market. I can open the market but when i go to specific categories (e.g. Socials) it just gives me a blank page. I could use search to find the programs and then install it. I don’t have any installation problem. Can you shed some light on this?

Model: GT I9000
Firmware: 2.3.2
Baseband: I9000XXJVE
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9000XWJV1-CL31216root@DELL101#2
Build: GINGERBREAD.XWJV1
I’m having SERIOUS problem with my Samsung galaxy S i9000
I upgraded to Gingerbread to stop my phone crashing every 5 minutes of normal use … now i keep on crashing even harder! but less i’m now experience Kernel Panics!
every few minutes when just sitting there in standby it it comes up with this:
AST_STAT = 0x4
PMIC_IRQ1 = 0x0
PMIC_IRQ2 = 0x0
PMIC_IRQ3 = 0x0
PMIC_IRQ4 = 0x0
PMIC_STATUS1 = 0x0
PMIC_STATUS2 = 0x0
a root mode screen comes up and tells me some kind of dangerous looking message (Kernel Panic / unknown root user mode).
This happened once when i activated 3G – so do i wait for yet more problems with this phone or send it back to factory to be destroyed like the little piece of rubbish that it is.
🙁 very sad

Hello , i have recently installed the 2.3.2 on the i9000 Galaxy S , but so far i have found two errors .
1st the phone hangs after instensive usage and gives kernel reboot error.
2nd after phone calls ends sometimes the phone hangs if there i didn’t remove the phone off the ear to disable the proximity sensor.
Please help if there is a way to fix this , and thanks for the great job .
Also one last thing , i need to root this rom how can i do it ?

@ahmed i would not recommened you to root your device straight away as i reckon you are a newbie to this flashing world as rooting voides the warranty. Though you can install the latest and the most stable 2.3.3 Android XXJVK Gingerbread version for your Galaxy S from here,
http://androidadvices.com/update-samsung-galaxy-s-gt-i9000-stable-gingerbread-xxjvk/
Do let me know if there are any other issues!

Firstly, thank you very much for this!
It works perfectly most of the time, but lately I have been getting more and more hangups on my i9000. I just goes dark and stays that way for anything from 20 seconds to several minutes. It happens at least once a day. I never experienced this with 2.2 lagfixed. Any thoughts?
Thank you in advance.

@Bendik 2.3.2 has some bugs which are solved in XXJVK 2.3.3, try installing the same!

Thank you so much for putting in the time and effort with this. The video was especially helpful but it was somewhat scary to hear you say “or it might brick your phone” so many times lo. It made me so nervous but I am grateful that you are so thorough in your instructions. Excellent post. Thanks again.

Hi,
Something has gone wrong after the following the steps above and now I see a phone joined inbetween a computer with a warning sign in Orange. I can’t turn the phone on, and when I enter the mode I normally would do to flash it Windows doesn’t recognise the device – says unknown device and does nothing after that.
Obviously cannot even find the device in Odin to do anything.
Please can you advise – I think all I need is the driver or drivers to connect the device in the ‘Downloading… Do not turn off Target!!!!’ mode

@luisnica and all other Galaxy 9000T owners:
the only way to get the phone working again is to get correct modem installed again. This is currently not available for Samsung Galaxy i-9000T phones.
What I did successful:
1) download Darkys ODIN version v9.2 – flash as described with PIT and TAR file (no modem included)
2) update to latest Darkys ROM version (excellent working a very fast
3) Now the modem part: Download file modem_ugjk3.zip (this is 850Mhz frequency by default) and install
4) enjoy the excellent Samsung Galaxy 9000T phone 😉
best of luck!

Neal. I have been moving from v2.3.2 to the latest v2.2.1. I have been experiencing a decrease in signal reception. I used to have 16asu in signal strength inside of my house. (I live outside of the main city). So far i cant get any call while i stay at home (where the signal strength now is 5 asu). I dont have any problem while i stay in the city. Nothing wrong with the service provider ( I compare it with another identical galaxy S). Do you have any idea how to fix this?: Thanks a lot.

ok
i think I figured it out. i upgraded a Samsung Galaxy i9000T. It looks like that this type of phone uses different frequency. Now, as keen as i am to use Gingerbread, i upgraded my other Samsung Galaxy i9000 (without T) and all runs fine from beginning.
Therefore, I suppose, it has something to do with the build of those 9000T phones which are not ‘common’.
Any thoughts are very appreciated. As such, clearly would not recommend at this stage upgrading any 9000T phones to ‘unofficial’ versions.

@matt though this update is for I9000, really no clue about the consequences if flashed this fw in some other phones! Its not advisable as some of the functions might not work well, though the phne looks same!

Still having loads of questions;
1) While in big cities in New Zealand, all works fine since updating from 2.1u2 to gingerbread,
2) as soon as i move out of cities, no signal anymore, though, i have second still original samsung I9000 2.1u2 which has good signal coverage and 3g service
3) what could be the reason? was there a frequency change somehow? why do i get good coverage with 2.1u2 and none coverage at all with gingerbread?
4) what does the PIT file exactly do?
Thanks lots
Neal Pradeep

@matt PIT file is not responsible here, its just a base file, check with your Network provider for the issue.

Think something is wrong:
When I download the Gingerbread as in the link in the top of this artice,
after unpacking I get totally different files as mentioned in your list:
-PDA_JS7.tar.md5
-PHONE_JPY.tar.md5
-CSC_XEE_JS1.tar.md5
The only correct file is the pit file:
-s1_odin_20100512.pit
Also, Odin the first field on the left hand side second row does not turn yellow.
I don’t get it at all…
Please help!

Hey ricnar I have the 9000B and managed to upgrade to Froyo 2.2, I don´t use the digital tv part here in Argentina so can´t cay much about it except it does try to look for channels, shame as its a good idea. Anyway use the I9000BVJJPD firmware also first without pit if it fails use 512 via odin3 v1.0

@gabe: You should check your APN settings: Go to “Settings” > “Wireless and network” > “Mobile networks” > “Access Point Names”. If you have no APN there, tap the menu button and select “New APN”. Look up the APN settings of your provider on Google. I hope this solves your problem.

Neal,
my issue seems to have been “swept under the carpet”
any news on a fix for the browser? Surely I cannot be the only person who has issues streaming…!
something interesting i found, when I go to the normal sky sports website the videos stream, however the mobile sky sports site doesnt allow me to view the video clips (it did on froyo 2.2).
i have read some feedback from other people on the samefirmware site who have said the browser is poor. perhaps there is a fundamental issue with the browser.

@Neal Pradeep: i have a question concerning flashing back to froyo. Why do you recommend flashing xxjpu first and not xxjpy directly?
thanks, toni
Neal Pradeep
March 7, 2011 at 10:51 am
good question, actually the first version of 2.2, 2.2.1 and the 2.3.2 are the base versions and rest all the versions are the updated versions, so unless and untill the base version is not flashed you can’t flash with just update, so is why i mention to flash with JPU first and then update JPY.

Its only requested to root your device if you wish to explore the device and wish to try something new with the device, though its a risky process i would not recommend for a non-developer user or the one who is an amateur as its a risky process.
thanks for your appreciation
You are free to use any applications, apps are build to be tried, so go ahead install and enjoy. 🙂

March 4, 2011 at 7:13 pm
You are AMAZING!!! Thanks so much for this post. I’ve been trying forever to upgrade from 2.1… I even took it into the Hong Kong Samsung Office and they said they couldn’t upgrade it for me and needed to charge me 1000 HKD+ to change the board because it was rooted at one point.. What garbage!
Quick question though, does swipe work after you upgrade? I can’t get mine to work… it just beeps at me when I try to swipe input, like there is nothing in the swipe dictionary or something. I also got the message “The Swype Package you installed is configured for another device and will operate with limited functionality”

hey daniel, thanks for your appreciation! Swype has some issues! but will be solved in the next available update which will be releases from 10 days from now!

hey neal
i use this fw but im facing some problems
please try to resolve it
1) When i try to switch off my phone for the first time, after closing logo displayed my my does not switch off and something is written on the left top.
its displaying
“KERNAL PANIC”
“UPLOAD MODE”
then i remove the battary and restart again.
after then it does nt show.
is there any problem?
2) my phone get slow after upgrading.
mandeep singh
March 4, 2011 at 4:02 pm
it is definately not an issue with BBC servers or skyports servers…! that I can assure you. everything was working fine prior to flashing to the new rom.
I rang t-mobile (who were helpless) and also samsung (the tech guy told me to update the kernel via the xda developers site). I have no idea how to update a kernel so i dont want to risk. streaming was fine on 2.2.1.
please please try to solve this for me!
mandeep singh
March 4, 2011 at 3:11 pm
Kidda Neal,
I it seems like I am the only person who is having a problem with the streaming, therefore I have decided to flash the firmware again with the same 2.3.2, just incase there is a conflict of some sort which is causing the issue. I am not concerned about losing any applications.
before I go ahead, can you tell me:
– what options I need to select in ODIN to do a complete reinstall
– what options (if any) should I select in recovery mode after the reinstall
– should I do a factory reset or not
thanks
Neal Pradeep
March 4, 2011 at 3:14 pm
its not required actually!! it would be my personal advice tht don’t flash again as the file system is of no fault and shouldn’t be blamed!! 🙂 there might be probs with the servers of bbc..

Thank you very much Neal. I trusted you and I have updated my SGS GT I9000T cellphone. Everything is working very good (so far). I love how fast it works. just 1 thing: I have not noticed difference with the battery usage. It drains fast when I turn on WiFi.(let say from 100% to 70% with 1 hour usage). And again thanks a lot.

OK, so I have gone to recovery mode and cleared the cache partition and also did another option (i think it is like a factory reset). I have reinstalled flashplayer but am still having streaming issues.
try this, go to http://www.m.skypsorts.com and try to stream one of the video clips. also you can try a video on the bbc mobile site. they are not working for me.
any ideas?

Hi Neal,
I am having a couple of problems with this flashing, firstly when I select USB option there is one option missing * Ask on Connection*.
When I select USB mode for some reason I can see E: and F: drives but its coming up as empty and I cannot transfer data between comp and phone.
Apart form that I am missing all the apps on Samsung Apps store.
I am getting quadrant score of 990-1050.

Here are some problems i have encountered so far:
I cannot stream video on the default web browser (I have flashplayer installed)
Default web browser freezes sometimes
Keyboard freezes sometimes (I installed the gingerbread keyboard from market)
Picture added to contact appears grainy after a little while, initially it appears OK
Generally a bit laggy…!
Any suggestions to improve the above would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

Kidda Neal,
This firmware version does not come with the gingerbread keyboard, why is that? I thought that would be something standard.
Also, i found the following video on youtube, which shows the samsung galaxy s running with the nexus kernel. Do you know what the kernel file is/does? it would seem as though it changes the GUI.
