How to Update Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100 to XXKG6 Gingerbread 2.3.4 Firmware

Also, this version of the firmware which is Gingerbread 2.3.4 XXKG6 is not an official firmware and hence can’t be updated with the KIES version. This update can be only applied using the manual method of Odin which we will see in the due course of the article on how you can update with the same. Though Samsung has a monitoring tool wherein they can track on all the firmware updation which you are doing, there is rarely any case wherein Samsung has voided the warranty of any user on the fields of beta firmware updates. And also most important thing is that, updating with this firmware version won’t mean that you have to root or have rooted the device. Rooting is completely different thing compared to the firmware upgrade process.

If you have rooted your phone before then you will lose the root access, but if you wish to root the phone after updating then you will have to wait for the article as we will see on how you can root Galaxy S2 GT I9100 on the XXKG6 firmware version. So, in the due course of the article we will see on how you can easily update the firmware for which you will have to follow the instructions like pre upgrade instructions as well as the actual procedure to update the phone.

Not many things have been updated if you compare from the last version of XXKG2 or XXKG3, but there are some things which have been further optimized as some of the users faced issues in lower quadrant ranks which is now eradicated with this version of firmware as it further streamlines the file system which is present in the GALAXY S2 GT I9100.

Some of the users are still not happy with the GPS as it doesn’t latch up properly and for all those this version of XXKG6 might just help as minute changes have been done on the GPS front. This was the case with most of the users in the Nordic region and also to some other parts too.

Some of the applications were having issues like force close errors which now have been fixed. There was an issue with the cache which was sorted out. Also, most importantly you can now enjoy error free downloads after updating with this version as some users were having issues with the slower internet speeds.

Note: Just in case if you face any issues like freezing then all you need to do is to just repeat the above procedure from the start after restarting the computer and phone by pulling off the battery from your phone.

hi, my question is with regard to updating my android ginger bread officially. i have a samsung galaxy s2 which is still on 2.3.3 but obviously 2.3.4 is out. i want to know if there is anyway i can just update this via kies itself rather than go through this procedure, which no doubt seems simple but i was just wondering why kies hasn’t officially pushed it like when i plug my phone in.
my second question is whether you have heard anything about samsung galaxy s2 getting the ice cream sandwich upgrade and when do you think that might happen if it does?

    • Reply NeaL Pradeep November 24, 2011 at 4:25 pm

as of now Samsung hasn’t pushed update via kies to some countries, you can either wait or can apply update by Odin manually.
yes, s2 will get ICS, there is no exact date for the same but as in when it comes, we will cover the same!

    Hi Neal,

I bought an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone from mobilecityonline.com in New York, USA. Prior to purchase, I explained to the employee that I am a tourist, living in Austria, Europe, and wanted to take the phone there upon conclusion of my stay in the US, and back in the hotel, I realized:

The Samsung Galaxy S II sold to me is a Spanish version. I expected to get the international version (or at least the english version) of the phone, which supports many languages, including English and German, according to this link:

The Spanish version I received has an English language option, yes, but apart from that, only comes with 3 more languages: Portuguese, Spanish, and Korean.

    2) In the box, there was no guarantee card. The box only contained the phone, 2 quick-start-guide booklets (one in English, one in Spanish), the US-power plug, the battery, the USB-cable, and additional earbuds. I double-checked thoroughly and did not find the guarantee card (2 year Samsung warranty) among the box contents.

    My questions are:

    – How can I download the German language pack?

    – Does Samsung do warranty repairs without asking for the warranty card? I hate the store receipt, and multiple times, I have read on their website that only the store receipt is required, can you shed some light about this?

    Thanks,
    loldog

    • Reply NeaL Pradeep October 25, 2011 at 2:00 pm

yes, they do repair w/o warranty card but bill is required!
As of now you cant install German Language!

Of course i am doing this only to install the Exynos Extreme Custom Rom

    Hi Neal,

I want to downgrade the modem from XXKG6 to XXKG5, it appears that XXKG6 modems is problematic when comes to use Wi-Fi or 3G, and I want to know if I can remain on the same XXKG6 Firmware and with the modem from XXKG5 on my Galaxy S2. The problem is that now the battery drains much much faster when the Wi-Fi or 3G is on, compared with XXKG2. (before upgrading to XXKG6 I was on XXKG2). And if I can, the phone data will remain untouched? and my phone is already rooted. Thanks

    Hi Pradeep :

I recently bought the SGS2 from the middle east. I had an update waiting straight away in samsung apps. I updated, after which my battery life has decreased very much. these are my SGS2 specs using *#1234#
    PDA: I9100XWKF3
    PHONE: I9100XXKF1
    CSC: I9100JVKF3

    1) Can i update my phone with the XXKG6 2.3.4 without losing my warranty?
    2) Will the phone re-boot with another language other than english after the update ?
    3) As i am new to samsung and android, i do not know why we have to root our phone ? What are its advantages ?
    4) When i used kies in PC , it says, my firmware cannot be updated, why is this so ?

Please help me with these questions, it will be really helpful. :-)

    THANK YOU..!!

    • Reply NeaL Pradeep August 13, 2011 at 11:05 am

yes , just updating won’t void the warranty, yes adter reboot you will get the language selection options! yes you will not be able to update via KIES as there is no official update yet. to get the update you will have to update with odin!

  43. Reply Hendrik August 12, 2011 at 2:01 pm

One thing that is assumed, but needs to be mentioned, is that you *MUST* have installed KIES and it’s device drivers!!!

Since I only use Windows when forced to (ie. for things like these firmware stuff) I didn’t have KIES installed, and I had troubles getting ODIN to see the Galaxy in the firmware mode.

Also: Note that this doesn’t appear to work with a VMWare Fusion in MacOSX ;)
(You need to be running as native Windows ;()

    • Reply NeaL Pradeep August 13, 2011 at 4:20 pm

but its only in this version or in different version?

      • Reply Hendrik August 15, 2011 at 12:54 pm

It’s for all ODIN related stuff, as it needs the KIES drivers installed before ODIN will see the Samsung serial device needed for connectin to the device.

  48. Reply Jd August 11, 2011 at 3:54 pm

    Hi NeaL Pradeep:

With reference to the same question, I too would like a link to the official version available in India.

I am informed by local Samsung service center that the out-of-the box phone is “BUILD No:GINGERBREAD 2.3.3 – XWKE8″ with KERNEL VERSION 2.6.35.7-I9100KWKE8-CL214845 root@DELL101 #2″.

In-short “WKE8″. I ratified this, at the Samsung outlet, checking out a brand new display phone.

The official KIES update that is available for the GS2 effective 1Aug11 is “GINGERBREAD 2.3.3 –KF3″

If you can make the “KF3″ version ava for download and flashing, it will help.

I have a battery issue, which needs to be replaced in warranty.
If Samsung sees a different firmware other than that officially released, they will refuse warranty.

Hence the friendly technician at service center suggested to roll back to official version, submit the phone, get the battery replaced FOC in warranty and then re-flash any version you want.

To honor warranty, Samsung needs the phone to have the officially released firmware or the one released by KIES.

By the way, I use your recommended GINGERBREAD 2.3.4 XXKG5 which is official Polish update and it really rocks!

I am told that even XXKG6 is available? Is it better than KG5 or should one simply wait for 2.3.5?

    • Reply NeaL Pradeep August 11, 2011 at 4:59 pm

you can update with this version of firmware

I am having severe problems with the inclement WiFi connectivity. This is a well known issue with the I5510.

There is a site where you get the updates too viz:

I am reliably informed that the European firmware works and resolves the issue and a couple of my friends did have success in this matter.

However I would prefer to go by your advise as regards the stability and effectiveness of the solution to resolve the WIFi issue.

I value your advise, as it is most balanced and aimed at a stable phone.

        Grateful for your revert.

      which error you are facing?

      • Reply Krishna August 8, 2011 at 11:52 am

The installation fails and on the phone screen it shows “software update fail”. Even after switching the phone on and off, it shows the same screen. However, the download mode still switches on.

It seems like all the China phones have this issue. Please advise if there is a workaround for this.

Aparantly there is a solution for this. Some guy posted the procedure in Chinese language but it seems like it is a custom version or needs rooting the phone. You can find the chinese thread here: Used chrome to translate it to English. I couldn’t understand the procedure as I am don’t have much knowledge about the latest phones. May be you can understand better from it.

        Regards, Krishna.

    Hi Neal,

Here is my story: bought a new S2 in Shanghai, China. I am totally new to this phone or Android platforms. Today followed the steps you explained above and got the “Software Update Fail” error code. Now whatever I do, that’s the only message displayed on the screen.

However, I should say that if anyone followed the above instructions, the “Re-partition” box becomes automatically checked. And, I don’t see you mentioning to uncheck it in this article, so I went without deviating from your instructions. Later in a previous article I saw that you advised to uncheck the box. However, I am not sure if that’s what is causing the problem.

I am still able to restart the phone in Download mode though. I tried to re-flash following the same steps while unchecking the “re-partition” box, but no success yet. Also, Kies can’t detect the device now (installed Kies after facing this problem). I have tried it both on Window7 and Vista Home without any success.

Please help me, this is my brand new phone and I haven’t even used it for a day. :'(

    Thanks,
    Krishna.

      • Reply Krishna August 4, 2011 at 3:09 pm

        Neal,

I realized from other forums that this is the problem for all phones bought in China mainland. Can ONLY use Chinese firmwares on these phones. HereBy the way, I did have access to the “Download Mode” all along. So, I followed your article to flash Chinese firmware: and it worked like a charm. Thank you so much for that article!!!!

Now it is fine, except that I am stuck with a different version of the firmware, which is the China Unicom version. My original version was the Retail version. Would like to get back to my Retail version. Any help is appreciated.

Also, the problem with Chinese versions is that there is no Android Market App, google mail, etc., unlike the western versions. Help here is also much appreciated.

        Thanks,
        Krishna.

        • Krishna August 4, 2011 at 3:12 pm

Actually, I would still like to flash with a western firmware. I am sure there are hundreds of others in the same situation as I am now looking for the same. Please let me know if there is a way around to flash a western firmware on a Chinese i9100.

          Thanks,
          Krishna.

        • NeaL Pradeep August 5, 2011 at 12:21 pm

thanks krishna for the update! you can proceed for updating the version which is mentioned above!

        • Andres October 17, 2011 at 1:24 pm

I got a way to get around this.

I just figure it out that if you have sucess flashin anything with odin, you unbrick your phone.

For example if you flash the genuine chinse modem.bin only it will unbrick the phone, the same happens with anything that you sucesfully flash, if will make your rom useable again.

Look at post #30 and you will see a way to install the western rom

    Hi Neal,
i updated my S2 as you instructed above, everything looks good. i could see the Version change in Settings.

but after update, i had completely charged the phone. now almost i have used for 4 hrs, 50% of the battery got drained and its draining faster. do i have to do anything else?

in my previous Kies version atleast battery was there for 20 – 30 hrs. but now it looks like doesn’t last for 12hrs.

you can reverse via KIES, you will have to manually update the phone viA odin!

          Neal,

        • NeaL Pradeep August 5, 2011 at 12:19 pm

you cant reverse the firmware via KIES!

        • Santh August 5, 2011 at 12:40 pm

          Hi Pradeep,

Kies says the version of the device can not be updated. may i know where is the option to reverse? please guide me.

        • NeaL Pradeep August 5, 2011 at 12:54 pm

You will have to update with the Odin version as you will have to update manually, the reason being that its a beta update and not a final release!

        • Santh August 5, 2011 at 2:19 pm

          Neal,

          ok fine.

          finally 2 questions.

          1) if i update with XXKG3 will solve my problem? or
          2) how to update manually the official version (where to download the files from) to get sync with Kies.

thanks for your help as always.

        • NeaL Pradeep August 18, 2011 at 5:59 pm

yes santh it will be solved!

        • Santh August 6, 2011 at 8:50 am

          Neal,

here is the update, i just downloaded XXKF2 2.3.3 and installed manually in the phone. but, phone didnt startup.. it got struck in welcome screen alone. so, finally i downloaded the XXKG3 2.3.4 version and installed.

the phone is working. but the same problem the battery doesnt last for 12 hrs. usually in the official version, if we didnt use the phone, it will be in ideal mode, when in ideal mode it doesnt consume more than 5% of the battery. but in this 2.3.4 version it consumed almost 60% for 8 hrs.. with default application.

if you guide me to install the kies version XXKF2 2.3.3 is highly appreciated.

          thanks a lot.

          You can install using odin.

Have an SGS2 updated to KG3 using your previous tutorial. Had used CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.tar thereafter to gain root, then flashed back the official kernel (Kernel Official Version XXKG3.tar) and used the usb jig to make my download custom rom count zero. Thus had obtained root as well as the kernel being “Samsung Official”. My question is …. can i update to KG6 using your method above, use the same CF Root kernel to gain root and then use the kernel provided in your guide?
