How To Update Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 to Gingerbread XXKPM 2.3.5 Firmware

Samsung Galaxy SL LogoOver a period of time, users are facing severe issues with all the recent firmware releases which Samsung had released unofficially and considering the fact that all other devices are fast pacing the updates, there is an urgent need for a stable update of Gingerbread for the Samsung Galaxy SL I9003. And here we come with the update of the latest Gingerbread 2.3.5 for Samsung Galaxy SL I9003. It was the last time when we saw Gingerbread XXKPH 2.3.4 version of firmware and now in the due course of this article we will see on how to update with the much advanced XXKPM Gingerbread 2.3.5 version of firmware. The happy news is that this XXKPM version of firmware is the first ever Gingerbread 2.3.5 for SL I9003 Galaxy variant.

Disclaimer: We have taken undue care on the simplicity as well as the authenticity of this procedure so that no issues are faced after updating your phone. We should not be held responsible in any manner just in case if anything happens to your device which is very unlikely if you follow all the mentioned instructions properly. Though if all there are any issues, we will try our level best to sort out.

Rooting Information:
Note that applying this firmware will in no manner will root device, so be rest assured about the same. Also just in case if you wish to root your Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 on this firmware, then we will also soon come up with the article wherein you can easily root your phone. It’s not recommended to follow any other procedure to root the phone as we will soon come out with the procedure to root.

Special Instructions to users on Custom ROMs:
Recently at Android Advices, we saw different custom ROMs for Galaxy SL I9003 smart phone and since you have experienced issues related to the back key you might just want to apply this. So, before proceeding to apply this procedure, you will have to first turn off your phone. Now, press the Volume Up key + Menu key and then pressing the former two keys you need to power ON the device after which you will see the recovery screen.

Once you enter into the recovery mode, you will have to select the options like “Wipe data/factory reset”, “Wipe Cache partition” after which select the option of “reboot system now” so that all the cache data gets cleaned from your phone.

After this you will have to proceed to the list of pre requisites which are mentioned below.

Pre Requisites:

  • Before proceeding ensure that you have charged your phone to the minimum of 60% so as to ensure that the phones doesn’t get turned Off in the process of the firmware update. Most of the users tend to skip this step and end up even facing battery issues after applying the update.
  • After this you need to create a backup of all the data present in your phone so that the same can be restored just in case if any data is lost in the process of the firmware update. You can refer to the below mentioned tips on how to backup and restore contents in your phone.

Text messages – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Phone Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log – Call Log and Restore
Pictures, Music, Videos, Files etc.– Copy to internal / External SD Card,
Internet & MMS Settings – Backup all the settings from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names

Note: Please don’t use the KIES tool to create the backup as since it’s a beta update, after updating with this firmware KIES won’t be supporting the phone and hence the backup cannot be restored.

  • We will be using the Odin flash tool for applying this update and not the KIES tool, so close all the softwares like antivirus, firewall tools and also close the KIES completely as these tools tend to interrupt the process of the firmware update. Also, in your phone enable the USB debugging. The USB Debugging can be turned On from the path Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging. Ensure that the USB Debugging option is ticked.

Rooting Information:
This firmware update neither requires you to root the device not applying this firmware will be rooting the device. Just in case if you have rooted the device then the rooting access will be revoked and you will have to again root the device for which we will soon come up with the article.

Now, let’s proceed to the next step where we will see on how to apply this update in the next page.

After completing all the above procedures i found i haven’t followed “Wipe data/factory reset”, “Wipe Cache partition” step and luckily everything is working fine till now withiout any problem and glitch.

AM I SUPPOSE TO Wipe data/factory reset”, “Wipe Cache partition EVEN AFTER EVRYTHING IS WORKING FINE? IS THIS MANDETORY. Sir NeaL,

I’ve upgraded my Samsung GT-i9003 from Froyo 2.2.1 to to XXKPE 2.3.4

Then rooted to Gingerbread 2.3.5 XXKPM

and now updated to this firmware XXKPM 2.3.5

Followed every procedures carefully and updated successfully. Everything works just fine except that my GT-i9003 often auto turns off. Do you have a solution for this??

    • NeaL Pradeep

      November 10, 2011 at 3:38 pm

have you cleared the cache from the recovery mode? do the same and let us know if the problem repeats!

      • Anjo

        November 10, 2011 at 3:54 pm

Already cleared the cache after successful update as instructed..

Accessing System Recovery, and notice something like…

        –Copying media files…
        Successfully copied media files.

        # MANUAL MODE #

        — Appling Multi-CSC…
        Installing Multi-CSC
        Can’t access to ‘/system/csc/SER/system/’.
        Successfully applied multi-CSC.

Does this something to do about the problem??

Finished Wiping Cache, will update if problem still persists…

        Thanks Sir Neal.

    November 10, 2011 at 6:14 am

I upgraded, rooted, and its working fine. The only glitch I encountered was I flashed it twice because it wont boot the first time. So far no problem encountered.

The snappiness of GPS connection is still there! If you want to improve your GPS connection, leave your 2.2.1 version behind!

However, I am waiting for the Cyanogen Mod 7.1 for I9003 which the last time I checked in its website, the ROM for this unit is still on-going. It will update up to 2.3.7 version and I think is also pre-rooted. Wow! Cant wait to have it in my unit!

I will be checking android advices for updates. It became my habit lately.

    Thanks for

Everything went fine even the rooting procedure.

    Dear Neil,

i was able to fix the language issue, everything seems perfect – camera, wifi, etc. funny thing is i did not loose any data atall. all my contacts, messages and call log are in place (i did not take a back up and restore). However i can not still enter the recovery mode to clear the cache and restore to factory settings as you have advised above. Please let me know if that step is mandatory and if i need to worry about it.

I want to try this beta version. I just recently updated from stock 2.2.1 to 2.3.4 which is facinating considering
that the GPS can now connect in a matter of seconds unlike the froyo which it takes minutes before it can connect. Other apps are also updated when you update your ROM.

This time please post how to root my device for SGS GT-I9003 for this ROM version.

    Im excited about the updates.

But I need to be able to root my device before proceeding.

So please post the instruction asap how to root. Thank you very much

I am planning to buy Galaxy i9003, but it does not have NFC support.

    1) How important is NFC for coming two -three years.
    2) Can i apply a software patch to enable NFC in i9003

    • NeaL Pradeep

      November 3, 2011 at 1:15 pm

As of now NFC usage is not yet that strong or massive that its being missed but over a period of time we will have to check on how we can adapt our living with NFC!
No, NFC is a hardware thing, its not a software patch!
