The root cause of it may vary from device to device and there are certain things which you can do to fix the problem. Here is what you should do if your GPS is behaving in an odd way.

Before you come to conclusion that GPS is not working on your phone make sure that it’s actually been given the rights to access. Most of the phones in the mobile are provided with A GPS which is the Assisted GPS to determine your location on the maps. The assisted GPS not only uses the GPS satellite signals but also may use cell phone towers and Wi-Fi network located nearby your phone vicinity to determine your location. It should actually help in quickly locating your location on Google Maps but the case is not the same when it comes to Android. First thing to ensure from your end is you should have turn on the GPS settings. To do that from your phone head to Settings > Location & Security and then tick Use Wireless Networks and Use GPS Satellites. By default your phone only uses the signal reception from GPS satellite and granting this access will help AGPS chip to give out quick results.

Use Wireless network

Using GPS Status & Toolbox App

Granting A GPS might solve your problem but it that doesn’t solve you should make use of GPS Status & Toolbox Android app. This application on your phone will clear all the cache and the nre download you’re A GPS data and which in turn can help you to re-acquire the correct satellite. Once you have downloaded this application you need to do the following –

Launch GPS Status & Toolbox and you will see the compass and raw data. Tap on the menu button for more options.

GPS ToolboxThen from the Tools select Manage A GPS state.

Manage AGPS

Finally click on Reset and then click on Download.

AGPS DownloadWhen its done exit from the App.

Finally if GP still didn’t get lock on your device then you can comment here explaining what’s the problem, which firmware you are on and your device name and model. We might find something for you.

I have a samsung fascinate with 2.3.5 I can not get a single satellite while using gps essentials. I have tried both the essentials app and status app and have tried everything that I have read but still will not show any sats being visible. Could this be an actual hardware issue where the gps is actually bad in the phone? Any suggestions with this phone.

    Motorola Droid Bionic
    Android Version 4.1.2
    Kernel Version 3.0.8

As of four weeks ago, the phone has not been able to locate any satellites. I’ve tried GPS Test and GPS Status apps to do the steps you mention above and no luck. I brought the phone to VzW and was told that I just need to wait for update to be pushed to the phone, this sounds odd since I’m not finding any others, on the web, with this issue right now.

It is a annoying app that is constantly advertising at you at the bottom of the screen. It is distracting and uses up screen space that could be better applied to other UI data. i quickly uninstalled it as soon as i saw this, after trying to get rid of it first. There are other GPS apps out there, i’ll go with one that isn’t so brain dead.

In my opinion, your brain is dead already. Developers of free aps are supported by ads for a reason.

yes, and all the Android phones does have GPS by default which will receive reception even though cell network is not reachable. The GPS reception will be through GPS Satellite.

i’m having this problem since i bought my galaxy ace. i wanted to know why the gps must rely on the wifi to gain access to maps and navigation rather than just using gps ONLY. Even if the wifi is switched off and the gps won’t work also…
