The froyo i.e. Android 2.2 update for the MyTouch 3G mobiles is going to be rolled out officially in December, but the phone users can manually try to upgrade it to the latest version already, thanks to the developer team. But the update is possible only for the first model of MyTouch 3G, the one without a 3.5mm audio jack, and even the Fender MyTouch devices can not be upgraded to the latest version of Android. The tutorial below can help update the device, and it’s a very easy one with no developer knowledge required.
There are a couple files you need to download and shift to the SD card of the phone, either through the USB cable/mass storage option or through the SD card reader.
Here are the steps –
Download the following 2 files, one being a few KBs in size and the other around 42MB in size. You would be flashing them simultaneously, so name them initially in order to remember.
- The next step would be resetting the phone’s factory settings, which would delete almost everything that you have saved and changed in the phone after buying it. So better take a backup of the data through Lookout, or Mybackup Pro etc. After taking the backup, go to Settings > SD Card and Phone Storage > Factory data reset > Reset Phone.
- Now once you have reset the phone to factory settings, take the first file and rename it to update.zip, and copy it to the root of your phone’s SD card. If your phone is on, switch it off and then boot up the phone by pressing both home and power buttons together, till a screen appears with an exclamatory mark in a triangle. Release the buttons, and hold them together again so as to enter the recovery mode. Then using the trackball, navigate to the “Apply sdcard:update.zip” to execute the flash operation, and there will be a few reboots.
- The above steps are to be repeated for the 2nd downloaded file, and before doing that, you need to delete the update.zip in SD card, and replace that with the other file which has to be renamed to update.zip.
After the 2nd file is flashed similarly, the update process is completed. The phone would reboot for a couple of times, and you can then enjoy the Froyo in the MyTouch 3G.
