How to Root Google Nexus S to Install Honeycomb Firmware

Root Nexus SFor all those who want to Root the Nexus S with the Super boot then you need to follow the below procedure. Rooting the Nexus S is very important if you are customizing the firmware or loading the firmwares and also rooting helps in further unlocking the device to the potential of installing the applications which normal users who doesn’t root the device can’t avail of. So, let’s proceed and see on how you can root your Nexus S with your Super boot. Please ensure that you are following the below procedure as it is as given below or else there are high chances that you will be bricking up the device. Also, most importantly you need to back up the data as in an unlikely event you may lose all the data including the sms, calls and applications.

Procedure to Root Nexus S with Super boot:

  • First of all you need to check the version of Gingerbread you are on as there are two different versions which has been released, one is GRH78 and another one as GRH55 and also ensure that you have unlocked the Nexus S boot loader which can be done by following the below small procedure:
  1. Switch the phone off
  2. Hold down volume up + power to get Nexus S in Standard Recovery Mode
  3. On your computer, open command prompt (Windows) or Terminal (Mac OS X)
  4. Type ‘fastboot devices’ (without quotes always) to see if your phone is connected via USB
  5. Type ‘adb reboot boot loader’
  6. Type ‘fast boot oem unlock’
  7. Use volume keys to select ‘yes, unlock boot loader’
  8. Use power button to select option
  9. Done! Nexus S boot loader is unlocked
  • Now, after unlocking the Nexus S boot loader, you need to download the Super boot for Gingerbread GRH78 or for Gingerbread GRH55 accordingly. You can extract the downloaded zip file in the directory.
  • After this, you need to put your Nexus S in the boot loader mode which can be done by turning off the phone, press and hold the Volume up and the power buttons together to start in the boot loader mode.
  • Now, you will get the root access which can be done by double clicking on the install-super boot-windows.bat file.

If you are on Mac / Linux or Ubuntu, then you need to root by following the below procedure,

Root Nexus S Mac OS X

  • Open Terminal
  • In Terminal, move to the directory where you’ve extracted the files
  • Type: chmod +x install-superboot-mac.sh
  • Type: ./install-superboot-mac.sh
  • Now wait for process to complete

Root Nexus S Linux / Ubuntu

  • Open Terminal
  • In Terminal, move to the directory where you’ve extracted the files
  • Type: chmod +x install-superboot-linux.sh
  • Type: ./install-superboot-linux.sh
  • Now wait for process to complete
