How to Update Motorola Defy with Jellybean 4.1.2 Firmware

Though this update is not an official firmware update released by Motorola, but this update comes with all the features like Google Now and with all other latest Google Applications.   • Since this is a custom ROM firmware, you will have to make sure that you take the backup of all the data with the help of below mentioned steps as you will be required to wipe all the data. So, with the help of all the below steps, you will have to create the backup and copy the backup files to your computer so that the same can be restored.

SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log – Call Log and Restore
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names

  • Ensure that the minimum battery charge left is 60% so as to ensure that it doesn’t get turned Off in the middle of firmware update. Also, enable USB Debugging mode in your phone from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”. All the antivirus tools should be closed / uninstalled before applying this update.
  • Ensure that your Motorola Defy smartphone is on the Rooted firmware. You can check whether your device is rooted or not with an App called “Root Checker” which can be downloaded from the PLAY Store.

Procedure to Update Motorola Defy with Jellybean 4.1.2 Firmware:

  • Turn Off the device so that the device in the recovery mode. The recovery mode in Motorola Defy can be entered by Pressing and holding the Volume Down button and press the Power button to turn ON the device.
  • Select “install zip from sd card” > “choose zip from sd card” > Jellybean 4.1.2 Firmware package and then the Google Apps package to select Ok to proceed with the installation process. Once the installation is done, select “Go Back” and “reboot system now” for rebooting the device.
  • To check on whether the firmware is updated successfully or not, head over to the path “Settings > About Phone > Firmware Version” where you will see that the current firmware version is Jellybean 4.1.2 firmware version.

Tip: If the device gets into the boot loop sequence or say gets stuck in the welcome screen, just re insert the battery and re follow the above instructions so as to again follow the above mentioned instructions.
