How to Install Cyanogen Mod 9 ICS Android 4.0 Firmware in Samsung Galaxy GIO S5660

Galaxy GIO LogoSamsung Galaxy GIO S5660 users can now feel free when it comes to the update of Ice Cream SANDWICH Android 4.0 firmware version. Though Samsung won’t be officially pushing the update, all thanks to the third party developers who are making it possible when it comes to the ICS Android 4.0 Roll out starting with the Nightly build Cyanogen Mod release which we will be checking out in the due course of this article. There will be some bugs in this firmware version but as in when the new updates come, all the bugs will be addressed. Please be informed that once you root the device, the warranty gets void. The only way with which you can reclaim the warranty is by re applying the official factory firmware. Do let us know which is your factory firmware version and we will guide you to update with the same.

Over a period of this article, we will be checking out on what are the features of this custom ROM firmware and also the list of pre requisites you need to follow  and then the detailed tutorial on how to apply the same.

Quick Pre Requisites:

  • All the data present in your Samsung Galaxy Gio S5660 needs to be backed up so as to ensure that just in case if any is lost or corrupted, the same can be restored with the help of below mentioned steps.

Notes – Backup in the mail so that you can then restore manually,
SMS Messages – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts Stored in Phone Memory – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log – Call Log and Restore Videos,
Images, Videos & Files etc.– Copy to internal / External SD Card,
Internet & MMS Settings – Backup all the settings from “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names

  • Minimum battery charge left in the device should be a minimum of 60% so as to ensure that the phone doesn’t get turn Off in the middle of firmware update.
  • All antivirus suites in your computer including the Firewalls should be disabled, while all the antivirus apps in your Samsung Galaxy Gio S5660 should be uninstalled as these tools may interrupt the process of firmware updation.

Important: This procedure only works on Rooted Galaxy Gio S5660 Devices, so ensure that you root your device before applying this firmware

  • Enable the USB debugging in your phone from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”. The USB Debugging option should be ticked.

    I have the same problem, no camera preview, but camera works sometimes.
    Also barcode readers do not work, I presume because of camara problem.

    Hi Neela!
    After S1,S2,P1000,I trying Cyanogen to a little gio and works fine(no work 3G data!) but I use Beta8(ics4.0.4)
    now I have:
    version 404
    base version xxkt6
    nv: marcin@maclaw#1
    cyanogen mod version 9.0.0-RCO-Galaxy ICS-UNOFFICIAL beta8
    version nr IMM76D
    is good beta8 like beta7!

    wouldn’t recommend it the way it is…gave a try
    but you can’t watch videos on the phone with this firmware…
    it’s like you can u see 1 frame here and there…(the audio plays fine though)
    It also gets stuck a lot of the point the firmware and so app isn’t responding..”would you like to wait or close it?”
    Also installing apps from the market is a pain in the arse…
    as a LOT of apps when u go to them it says this app is not compatible with this device..because ics doesn’t have official support for this phone…you can still work around that…by downloading the apk of that app and installing it manually…but then upates for it as the market doesnt recognize the device as a supported one…
    I’ve used it for about a couple months…and just went back to gingerbread…I think the video was the biggest hassle…
    Also..I never managed to get flash to work on the phone even though I installed a flash apk

    I have the same problem.. After I installed my rooted phone with ICS, it stuck at black screen with “ANDROID”. Now KIES and ODIN can’t even detect my phone. Booting at recovery mode always shows E: failed to mount /system.
    Please help me.

    Just flashed my gio with this ICS doing everything step by step as you described and my phone doesn’t boot up ;/ You wrote that in first boot it can take a while but I guess not more then 2 minutes – I’ve waited 5 minutes, no effect
