Show Touches on Android Screen while Recording Screencast on ICS Devices

If you are running Ice Cream Sandwich on your Android smartphone and use it to do how-to videos or record screencast videos for sharing with friends, etc the touch pointer on the screen is very essential to be displayed on the recorded video as that’s the only guide for the user watching the video.

By displaying the area/icon which we are touching, the person watching the video can easily follow how it goes. Also, some of the apps have gesture based controls like swiping to one side or pinch zooming which can be brilliantly displayed using the touch pointer.

To enable this option on your ICS running smartphone, follow the following steps:

  1. Open the App drawer from your homescreen and choose Settings. Alternatively, ICS devices also have a quick shortcut to settings from the notification bar when pulled down from the top.
  2. Once you’re into Settings, choose Developer Options.
  3. In the set of options that open up, you should be able to see ‘User Interface’
  4. Under User Interface, enable ‘Show Touches’ option by tapping on it. As the description says there, now your Android smartphone will start showing visual feedback for touches.
Note that by enabling this option, you are setting the phone to show touches on the screen always. So while you’re using your phone, if you don’t wish to see the pointer tagging along every time you make a touch, go to settings and disable it. You can use it when you are recording screencasts by enabling it using the same method as above.
