Galaxy S I9000

Update Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000 to Froyo XXJPY 2.2.1

Many of them who have installed the last firmware that is 2.2.1 XXJPU version have complained about the incompatibility of the Galaxy S with the Kies desktop. There is practically no fix for the XXJPU version but now the latest version of 2.2.1 has arrived which is much faster, improved and also comes with Kies support. So, let’s check out the simple procedure with which you can install the same, please ensure that you have backed up all you information including your contact information and other data files which you feel important. The best way to back up your contacts is either with on-device backup tool or you can backup your contacts with the Gmail client. Please note that all you applications too will be erased after installing the new firmware on your device.

Also, most importantly, please note that this update is purely for Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 model and not for any devices like for Vibrant, Captivate, Mesmerize, Fascinate and Epic. So, let’s proceed and check out how you can update your device with the latest 2.2.1 XXJPY version easily. Kindly follow the below mentioned steps carefully as this may brick your phone if you don’t follow the steps.

Procedure to update 2.2.1 XXJPY on your Samsung Galaxy S:

  • Firstly, you need to download the 2.2.1 XXJPY version and need to save the zip file as it is on the desktop.
  • Next up after installing the file, you need to open the Odin 1.3 client so that you can install this downloaded firmware into your device.

android odin

  • Now in the Odin interface as shown above, click on the PIT button and choose the 512.pit file (you can find this file in the extracted folder which you have downloaded).
  • Please note that, you need to check the Re-partition box under the options section of Odin and leave the rest of the option as it is without changing or modifying any options. Now, after backing up your device switch off your device, remove your SIM card if you have one and your micro SD card if you have inserted any in the device.
  • Now Please follow this simple step very carefully as now you will have to boot up your device in the download mode. To boot up your phone into the download mode, for doing this you simply need to press hold down the Volume Down button + the Home key button (the middle one).  While still holding those 2 buttons down now press and hold the power button and keep holding these buttons until you boot up with a screen as shown below,

download screen

  • So, now, when you see the download mode screen, connect your device with the computer using USB Cable and after that you will find the screen like shown below.

odin successfully connected

  • Now, after this, you need to click on Start button and Odin will update the firmware on its own, make sure that you don’t plug out your device with computer or else this may interrupt the installation and may brick your phone.
  • firmware upgraded successfullySo, now once you see the above screen with a Green box showing PASS! in the Odin then it means that your device has been successfully installed with the new firmware XXJPY 2.2.1 stock and is now safe for you to remove the USB cable from your phone and now you need to boot your device.
  • Now after successful installation of the new firmware its now time to optimize your device with new firmware so that your phone becomes faster and zippier. First turn off your device, long press the volume up key, press Menu as holding both the buttons press the power button to start. You can see that after device gets switched ON, you will find options like clear cache data. You can clear that by selecting options Wipe data/factory reset and also you need to select Wipe Cache partition after which you need to reboot your device by selecting reboot system now.

recovery mode

This is it, your device now restarts and you can check by going to Settings and then to About phone to find the current firmware of your Android device, it will show XXJPY 2.2.1. Please note that this upgrading neither needs you to root your device or roots your device after installing the new firmware.

I followed the instructions on my Samsung Galaxy S 4G (this site showed up on Google, thought it would be the same set of instructions). Finished process with success and when I went to reboot the device… NOTHING, my phone won’t start. Can’t get into reboot. Light doesn’t even turn on if I plug the USB cable into it. Help!

I have the same problem of John Tumath, and I think the guide is wrong. You never say to select the .tar file, and I didn’t. Thank you I brick my phone

    • Neal Pradeep

      March 6, 2011 at 7:33 pm

follow the procedure for XXJPU first from here to unbrick the phone and then you can install XXJPY, directly you cannot install the firmware from 2.2 to 2.2.1 without installing XXJPU.

So, first install XXJPU and then follow the procedure for XXJPY. Sorry for inconvenience.

    • Neal Pradeep

      March 6, 2011 at 7:38 pm

@andrea do let us know if you face any problems, first install XXJPU from the above link by following the procedure carefully and then after that follow the procedure for XXJPY. You will be then 100% able to recover your phone. Sorry for inconvenience again.

    Hello, Neal.
I flashed my Galaxy a couple of months ago with the Froyo 2.2.1 XXJPU, kernel root@sep-55 #1.
It is very fast and stable and does everything it is supposed to do.
Kies does not see it, which is no problem as I do sync on gmail. (Kies for Mac is a joke, for Win a bit better)
The phone scores 1469 on the Quadrant Standard . What would be the benefit of upgrading to XXJPX?
    Thank you.

    February 20, 2011 at 6:01 pm

@Garmin as long as your download mode was ON, you cannot brick or dead your device. I can make out that you haven’t followed the steps carefully, i kindly request you to visit your nearest samsung service centre.

My personal advice to you will be that while submitting your phone in the service centre kindly don’t mention that your phone became dead while you were flashing as this may immediately void the warranty, juz tell them that it happened suddenly and you don’t know about it.

    February 2, 2011 at 4:50 pm

    Hi all,

SORRY but this does NOT work. Nowhere does it say to tick the .tar file!!
u need to tick the pit file (described) AND the tar file at the PDA (not described).

Do it like it says here and nothing will happen – no switching on, etc.

No problem as you can enter download again by VOL down, HOME and START (5 secs). do again, with tar file ticked. Cheers.

    January 13, 2011 at 6:53 pm

I found out the solution when I was trying to update JPY from JPK. After much bricking agony that is.

    1. Download and update JPU (3 files) through Odin, repartition ticked and pit 512. You need to do this first.
    2. Once done, add JPY (PDA only) and pit 512, and DO NOT TICK(!!!) Re-Partition!!!!

That is all and my galaxy s is back and running on JPY! 🙂

  65. galaxy

    January 13, 2011 at 7:29 am

is there any differen jpu n jpy if it’s only the firmware version then what for do a flash again here dun have a full 3.tar files

    • Neal Pradeep

      January 13, 2011 at 8:01 am

jpy has comes with an improved speed, better battery life plus a kies support too, whereas jpu doesn’t have good battery life, no kies support and also lags a bit.

    January 9, 2011 at 3:30 pm

after the post from Saevar_Orn i started experimenting a bit. it is true that this tutorial is for upgrading to XXJPY AFTER having installed XXJPU
    -First installed XXJPU + repartitioned.
-then tried with only JPY_JPY_JPY.tar file under PDA in ODIN and the 512.PIT file . I FAILED and the phone bricked (no repartition)
-then I tried a hybrid method (i do not recommend it) all the setup from the tutorial of XXJPU except in PDA I put JPY_JPY_JPY.tar + repartitioned. Miraculously it worked but basepand version :I9000XXJPU and firmware FROYO.XJPY (strange??)
-then i tried the above tutorial as is only with the JPY_JPY_JPY.tar and 512.PIT file and it worked! Cleaned the cache and registry and now the phone is faster than ever + it connects to kies!!
any explanations on the above behaviour?
it would be nice to make this tutorial a bit more clear.

Through Odin you will need to install JPU. First update to JPU as the pit file is different. Then on to JPY.

If you use the Kies hack you might be able to do it in one go?

If you download the JPU file from then you should have the files needed, 3 of them. You might have to get pit 512 from some where else (don’t forget to tick repartition when changing from pit file to pit file. ie tick re-partition when updating TO JPU. Leave it blank when going to JPY). When you have updated to JPU, use Odin again and put the singly file from JPY into PDA and go again.

Don’t forget to register your IMEI number after the last upgrade.

I just followed this and now my phone has “XXPJY 2.2.1” and everything is working great 🙂

and to know when you are supposed to take the SIM card out and stuff I followed this Video.

    Easy as that 🙂

Exactly what happened to me Theodorus I’m sure there’s an error or omission in the above instructions as that’s three people with the same response. Would love to get it working as I want access to Kies….

May have to go back to 2.2 otherwise.

after some very stressful hours with a lot of bricking i managed to make my phone work with the previous tutorial and installed XXJPU. i have a sgs gt-i9000 and the update XXJPY just doesn’t work for me. it always bricks my phone no matter what. I followed closely the instructions, but when it reboots there are some errors and after the S logo the phone bricks and vibrates randomly. the XXJPU worked like a charm though and the firmware .rar file from samfirmware is much more complete (it has everything – odin, .pit and the three files)

@david yes you can/cannot select repartition, if its not successful then select repartition n flash it again..
but its recommended to Re partition.

What he needs to check again is the link…. “Speedy NeaL” you say that in the Download link is Odin and everything but it isn´t….. It only has “JPY_JPY_JPY.tar” and nothing more

I suggest you go thru these instructions and check everything and show screens how Odin is supposed to look like when we press “START”

Hi as you didn’t repond to my last post, can you go thru these instructions just once as something goes wrong at the final reboot stage. Can you clarify that part please.
I got a green pass every time but then it dies after I clear cache and reboot.
Please confirm if I have completed XXJPU if you tick repartition or not?

@theodoros if you have my last post that is upgrade to 2.2.1 that is XXJPX version, if you have downloaded tht xxjpu version then in tht .pit file had come if not then you can download from the same page at the bottom of the page from where you have downloaded xxjpu or xxjpy.

re partition can be selected or not selected as the only diff. is if you repartition then data will be lost.

everything else is done automatically by odin as mentioned in the post!

  79. theodoros

    January 7, 2011 at 10:20 am

I have some questions on your tutorial:
-first of all there is no .pit file in the zip file of the link. Do we have to download it from somewhere else?where? is it required? if not what changes should be done in the configuration (perhaps no repartitioning??)
-after having extracted the .zip file, then we install odin in the same folder?
-you say we do not have to change any parameters, everything else will be done automatically?

    please clarify this steps
    thank you

Managed the XXJPU download OK and also the XXJPY one when I cleared caches etc and reboot the logo and tune comes up fine then it just goes black and sits there buzzing twice sporadically like a dying fly and nothing works.

Took battery out and went back to the XXJPU version but need this as isn’t recognised in KIES. Help!

I followed your tutorial and successfully flashed the device with Odin (green PASS!), but I can’t start my phone anymore. I’ve tried holding Volume Up + Menu (not Home?) + Power buttons but it doesn’t do anything. Does that mean my phone is dead? Any help would be appreciated!
