Facebook is soon going to push the update to the Facebook for Android application, and that would be the Facebook 4.0 which is coming with some big overhaul to the design and quite a lot of other changes. If you are in the beta group, you would already get a chance to check it out but if you are not, there is still an option – install the APK file. You still won’t be getting all the new features if you are installing this one.
The overhaul is not just to the news feed but even to the settings bar on the left and there is a new title banner added to the left of the action bar, and the same banner area has got a search bar, so you won’t need to go to the menu always to search for something. Just underneath to that is the main one – Five new icons with the options –
- News Feed
- Pending friend requests
- Status updates
- Notifications
- Menu
In the earlier versions of Facebook, and the current Facebook 3.9 version, there were just the three options for Status, Photo and Check-in but in the new version, you would see all these in the bottom, floating along so that you can access it anytime. The app permissions too would give you an idea of what all is going to happen new, and the new Facebook permissions that we see are –
- Read your text messages (SMS or MMS)
- Add or modify calendar events and send e-mail or guests without owners knowledge
- Read calendar events
- Read your own contact card
- Change the network connectivity
- Connect and disconnect from Wi-Fi
- Set the wallpaper
- Change your audio settings
It is Facebook’s wish on who can get the access to all the features already and I was lucky enough to get most of it, although I couldn’t get anything about the wallpaper or the SMS / MMS reading. The font changes were quite visible, with the menu having a thinner and way better look than the previous one, which looked thick and funkier.
