After recent reports that Google might just shed its Nexus lineup of devices in terms of smartphones, it now seems that Google is working on a separate project for smartphones. This all new smartphone which came into the light comes with the Kinect like 3D sensors for hardcore gamers and also enhances overall usage of phone. While Google always wanted to something on the gaming front, this could be one of the marvelous product if it ever launches commercially. As you can see below, this phone is the new in house smartphone prototype outfitted with the Kinect like sensors.
Along with the 5 inches of screen size which comes with the Google’s advance technology and projects group (ATAP) are the same people who were behind the Project Ara. This project Tango is led by Johnny Lee who helped create the Microsoft Kinect. The main aim of the Project Tango is to give a mobile device the human scale understanding of motion and space. This allows users to map the world around them and can make use of the same in infinite ways. Google is distributing these devices for developers to work on algorithm and applications.
To start with the 5 inches of screen size, this device is supposedly having 4MP of camera at the back along with the motion tracking camera along with the bunch of sensors like gyroscope. Using the motion and depth tracking, the “vision processor” is manufactured by Movidus. Other list of standard specs include version of Android running on the latest OS with WIFI, Bluetooth and NFC standards embedded into this. Google does mention about the indoor navigation along with the immersie virtual gaming support like Octopus Rift. Also, additionally this app can even help the visually impaired if applied correctly. While the possibilities could be infinite, it all depends on how Google will be coming out with the applications.
Google is allowing the developers to sign the same for early access for prototype developer kits. First 200 handsets will only go to the handpicked selected developers so that the apps can be made on this brand new platform. For this, Google needs developers to pitch for the same before they get the prototyping kit. With Project Ara still living fresh in everybody’s mind, this Google I/O we might just get a glimpse on this Google’s Project Tango. Google is planning to ship the prototype devices starting as early as March 14 2014 which is almost couple of weeks away.
Though there is no definite date on by when this can be revealed or announced or for say be launched. We can only hope that, this project tango is for masses and not for just classes which was the case with their Google Glass project.
