How to Hard Reset the Samsung Galaxy S Mobile

Samsung Galaxy S ResetIf you have Samsung Galaxy S smartphone then probably you have the best smartphone which runs on Android. With resetting your mobile phone you get increase in space and importantly increase in speed. Now a reset to your mobile phone will delete all the data which are stored in your phone memory like media files, contacts, messages and others media files with settings, good thing is there will be no delete of data from the microSD card.

The soft reset of your mobile restores your mobile to its factory settings but if you are not able to do soft reset then what do you do? Don’t worry you can do a hard reset on your mobile phone. Here is the procedure on how to hard reset your Samsung Galaxy S mobile phone with step by step instructions.

  1. Turn of your mobile phone and reinsert the battery.
  2. Continuously hold the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and release the power button.
  4. You would be presented with the options like Fastbook, Recovery, Simlock and clear storage and now release the Volume Down button.
  5. Select the Clear Storage by pressing download the Volume Down button.
  6. Press and release the power button.
  7. Now confirm your decision: Volume Up for Yes and Volume Down for No.

So select YES to delete all the data including the third party applications from your Samsung Galaxy S. It will automatically reboot when the process is successful.

Updates :

You can easily wipe off the date from your mobile phone by selecting Menu > Settings > Privacy  and then select Factory data reset to erase all the data present in your mobile phone which is not recoverable.

  12. Second request….

AT&T bricked my Galaxy S (Captivate) and I have tried all the methods listed here but none of them work. The splash screen appears followed by the Galaxy S logo screen then the phone goes dark and vibrates every thirty seconds. When I attempt a factory reset using the method above, it tells me it is missing a file and the screen goes blank. How/or where can I download the OS for this phone in order to get it back to working?

  13. how to do that?

  14. my galaxy SI GTI9003 remains on the samsung screen. what should i do ??

  16. I have a GT19003. I am unable to reset content of my mobile. i have done a soft reset and a hard reset as mentioned above, but all games and applications still seem to exist. But the device is giving me all sorts of exceptions on various java packages.

I am unable to use it and i am unabel to reset it. can i get it ABSOLUTELY REFRESHED with OS that it came up with. It currently has 2.3.5.

  17. AT&T bricked my Galaxy S and now I have no way of getting it to turn on. What can I do? I have tried all the methods listed here but none of them work. The splash screen appears followed by the Galaxy S logo screen then the phone goes dark and vibrates every thirty seconds. It’s also way out of warranty so I have no way of getting it replaced (I’ve already tried through AT&T).

  18. To factory reset a GALAXY S you would need to press the Power+Home+Volume Up button all together. Let me know your feedback

  19. I apologise for my English.

I bought my SGS (GT i9000) on Portugal and I brought it to Brazil.
    I’ve made network unlock.
If I’ll select “Wipe data/factory reset”, I’ll need to make unlock again?

  20. Why have I never seen anyone say to UN-SYNC your phone before reset?!!!!
The last time I reset my phone, it erased all my Google Calendar because it was in sync.

I don’t completely trust Kies with the backup, but I still do it. I believe in redundancy, so I manually transfer all folders to my computer as well. (or music, pictures, downloads etc. …All the important stuff!)

Again, I TURN OFF Sync under “Settings > Accounts and sync > Auto-sync”, to be sure no “cloud data” disappears on me again!! I lost a ton of seriously important data and will never let it happen again, and I hope to save everyone out there the trauma I suffered! LOL

    Good luck everyone!

  23. Hello. I have a problem. I updated my I9000 through Odin, with Gingerbread 2.3.5,and now Kies shows me a message: your device does not accept firmware upgrade. So, the question is: HOW I COULD DOWNGRADE TO AN OFFICIAL FIRMWARE( + METHOD) WITHOUT KIES`S PROBLEM? I MEAN, I WANT TO INSTALL A FIRMWARE USING ODIN,IF IT IS POSSIBLE, THAT KIES RECOGNIZE IT TO BE ABLE FROM NOW ON TO DO AN UPDATE WITH KIES. Thank you!

  24. Neal, You seem so knowledgable, I want to/NEED to upgrade my Galaxy X from Eclair to Froyo and maybe even Gingerbread but when I attempted to do so thru KIES, I found it is not compatible with out 64-bit computers.

That’s all I have access to. And of course it’s impossible to do over the air.

And ideas on how I can do a firmware upgrade given these obstacles? In my last hard reset, it seems I’ve losr my flash player too and the most recent versions only work with 2.2.

What suggestions do you have for me, my friend?

  25. is it possible to retrieve back if I accidently reset the phone?

  35. hey

iv installed ROM 2.3.4 on my galaxy s i 9000 (last ROM was froyo 2.2). one of the steps was “wipe data/factory reset” & “wipe Cache partition”. wasnt it supposed to delete all the files on the SD card? because i still have all the old files (pics/music and others).

if i wanted to delete all those? what was I supposed to do?
i want to clear the SD card and have only the files from the new ROM without any of the old one.

(Sorry about my English, it’s not my native language)

  36. Hi,

I have the Galaxy S and bought it outright, IE not simlocked or anything. I bought it from a Vodafone store in NZ. There I got 3G. Moved to Aussie, changed to Vodafone au and got 3G there too.

Changed to Telstra a month or so later but no 3G. Even after removing Vodafone APN and setting Telstra. I am told I will need to reset the phone. However I have a feeling that their is a file which will probably still exist even after a reset that won’t solve the problem.

In the file structure under /system/csc/ there is a file called customer.xml which contains some APN info relevant to the Vodafone NZ provider. This file is referenced by another xml file in the root called SW_configuration.xml. I cannot edit these files as not root.

Do you know any way I can remove the old vodafone xml files (which must be overriding the APN settings). It is very frustrating as I currently only get 2G data not 3G. I have tested my sim in other phones and it gets 3G fine, but any sim placed into my phone only gets 2G.

I am not convinced a reset will fix the problem. Any ideas?

    Many thanks.

  37. Thanks Neal, my mobile is the GALAXY Si900

  38. what with froyo, gingerbread, and eclair firmware updates, I’m confused? which is oldest? which is newest and why don’t samsung provide us galaxy s users the latest firmware anyway?

  39. Will then hard reset allow me to run apps NOT from Market? (A TT Galaxy S)

  40. Yes your phone will return to the latest downloaded/installed update (Froyo2.2.1 or Gingerbread 2.3.4 depending on your country)

You should be able to restore your backuped data (trough KIES) to your phone.
However this is not 100% fullproof though. You might have to re-install some apps/settings.
There are quite some posts on different forums stating not all data could be restored because the data wasn’t backuped completely by KIES.

IF YOU’RE PHONE IS ROOTED and ONLY IF, you could buy “Titanium Backup for root users” from the Market and make a full backup. (T B won’t work with non-rooted phones)
That way all your apps + settings (including high-scores from games) will be backed up.
With Titanium Backup you’re able to select wich apps/settings are to be backuped.

  41. Hi there!

If I do a Hard Reset, will the phone remain on the latest firmware update I did? Or will it go back to the factory software version (Android 2.1)?
Also, if a do a backup of all the data and apps stored on my phone, can I restore them after the Hard Reset?
    Thanks!

  42. If I am not wrong the volume down button on Galaxy S is for the “download mode”. To factory reset you would need to press the Power+Home+Volume Up button.

    • i did press the power+home+volume up button and nothing works. is there anything else i can do to reset this phone

      • well i put in and out the batteries than volume down the power button twice and its going to take a while
