How to Hard Reset the Samsung Galaxy S Mobile

Samsung Galaxy S ResetIf you have Samsung Galaxy S smartphone then probably you have the best smartphone which runs on Android. With resetting your mobile phone you get increase in space and importantly increase in speed. Now a reset to your mobile phone will delete all the data which are stored in your phone memory like media files, contacts, messages and others media files with settings, good thing is there will be no delete of data from the microSD card.

The soft reset of your mobile restores your mobile to its factory settings but if you are not able to do soft reset then what do you do? Don’t worry you can do a hard reset on your mobile phone. Here is the procedure on how to hard reset your Samsung Galaxy S mobile phone with step by step instructions.

  1. Turn of your mobile phone and reinsert the battery.
  2. Continuously hold the Volume Down button.
  3. Press and release the power button.
  4. You would be presented with the options like Fastbook, Recovery, Simlock and clear storage and now release the Volume Down button.
  5. Select the Clear Storage by pressing download the Volume Down button.
  6. Press and release the power button.
  7. Now confirm your decision: Volume Up for Yes and Volume Down for No.

So select YES to delete all the data including the third party applications from your Samsung Galaxy S. It will automatically reboot when the process is successful.

Updates :

You can easily wipe off the date from your mobile phone by selecting Menu > Settings > Privacy  and then select Factory data reset to erase all the data present in your mobile phone which is not recoverable.

I think my Galaxy has a virus and would like to reset it to factory. I have tried the factory reset on the phone and get the message (No reset was performed because the System Clear service is not available). Then I tried pushing the volume button with the power button and the phone just starts up. It doesn’t give me a window with the options you referred to. I tired this way at lease a dozen times holding things many different ways and go the same result. The phone just starts up, no window. Will you please help me with this. I would really like to just start over with my phone. I love this phone but just want to change what I have in it.

I have a problem, I always startup my Samsung S1 and I enter an application and its like ‘Welcome first time user to this application’ and then gives me a guide around the app like its the first time I have been on it.
I would like a way to fix this because on my keyboard application I have to redownload the laungauge pack repeatedly and this really eats up my data limits, if someone could answer that would be nice… If the moderator can see my email please email with a fix.

    Second request….

AT&T bricked my Galaxy S (Captivate) and I have tried all the methods listed here but none of them work. The splash screen appears followed by the Galaxy S logo screen then the phone goes dark and vibrates every thirty seconds. When I attempt a factory reset using the method above, it tells me it is missing a file and the screen goes blank. How/or where can I download the OS for this phone in order to get it back to working?

    I apologise for my English.

I bought my SGS (GT i9000) on Portugal and I brought it to Brazil.
    I’ve made network unlock.
If I’ll select “Wipe data/factory reset”, I’ll need to make unlock again?

  20. Reply Canucklehead February 11, 2012 at 11:28 am

Why have I never seen anyone say to UN-SYNC your phone before reset?!!!!
The last time I reset my phone, it erased all my Google Calendar because it was in sync.

I don’t completely trust Kies with the backup, but I still do it. I believe in redundancy, so I manually transfer all folders to my computer as well. (or music, pictures, downloads etc. …All the important stuff!)

Again, I TURN OFF Sync under “Settings > Accounts and sync > Auto-sync”, to be sure no “cloud data” disappears on me again!! I lost a ton of seriously important data and will never let it happen again, and I hope to save everyone out there the trauma I suffered! LOL

    Good luck everyone!

Hello. I have a problem. I updated my I9000 through Odin, with Gingerbread 2.3.5,and now Kies shows me a message: your device does not accept firmware upgrade. So, the question is: HOW I COULD DOWNGRADE TO AN OFFICIAL FIRMWARE( + METHOD) WITHOUT KIES`S PROBLEM? I MEAN, I WANT TO INSTALL A FIRMWARE USING ODIN,IF IT IS POSSIBLE, THAT KIES RECOGNIZE IT TO BE ABLE FROM NOW ON TO DO AN UPDATE WITH KIES. Thank you!

Neal, You seem so knowledgable, I want to/NEED to upgrade my Galaxy X from Eclair to Froyo and maybe even Gingerbread but when I attempted to do so thru KIES, I found it is not compatible with out 64-bit computers.

That’s all I have access to. And of course it’s impossible to do over the air.

And ideas on how I can do a firmware upgrade given these obstacles? In my last hard reset, it seems I’ve losr my flash player too and the most recent versions only work with 2.2.

What suggestions do you have for me, my friend?

    hey

iv installed ROM 2.3.4 on my galaxy s i 9000 (last ROM was froyo 2.2). one of the steps was “wipe data/factory reset” & “wipe Cache partition”. wasnt it supposed to delete all the files on the SD card? because i still have all the old files (pics/music and others).

if i wanted to delete all those? what was I supposed to do?
i want to clear the SD card and have only the files from the new ROM without any of the old one.

    Hi,

I have the Galaxy S and bought it outright, IE not simlocked or anything. I bought it from a Vodafone store in NZ. There I got 3G. Moved to Aussie, changed to Vodafone au and got 3G there too.

Changed to Telstra a month or so later but no 3G. Even after removing Vodafone APN and setting Telstra. I am told I will need to reset the phone. However I have a feeling that their is a file which will probably still exist even after a reset that won’t solve the problem.

In the file structure under /system/csc/ there is a file called customer.xml which contains some APN info relevant to the Vodafone NZ provider. This file is referenced by another xml file in the root called SW_configuration.xml. I cannot edit these files as not root.

Do you know any way I can remove the old vodafone xml files (which must be overriding the APN settings). It is very frustrating as I currently only get 2G data not 3G. I have tested my sim in other phones and it gets 3G fine, but any sim placed into my phone only gets 2G.

I am not convinced a reset will fix the problem. Any ideas?

    Many thanks.

you can import using your gmail account as it supports the xml files. kindly configure the settings for 3G which you can get from yuor operator!

  40. Reply Kath July 29, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Yes your phone will return to the latest downloaded/installed update (Froyo2.2.1 or Gingerbread 2.3.4 depending on your country)

You should be able to restore your backuped data (trough KIES) to your phone.
However this is not 100% fullproof though. You might have to re-install some apps/settings.
There are quite some posts on different forums stating not all data could be restored because the data wasn’t backuped completely by KIES.

IF YOU’RE PHONE IS ROOTED and ONLY IF, you could buy “Titanium Backup for root users” from the Market and make a full backup. (T B won’t work with non-rooted phones)
That way all your apps + settings (including high-scores from games) will be backed up.
With Titanium Backup you’re able to select wich apps/settings are to be backuped.

    Hi there!

If I do a Hard Reset, will the phone remain on the latest firmware update I did? Or will it go back to the factory software version (Android 2.1)?
Also, if a do a backup of all the data and apps stored on my phone, can I restore them after the Hard Reset?
    Thanks!
