Android One Dream UNO Mi-498

Spice Android One Dream UNO Mi-498 Hands On & First Impressions

Spice, along with two other brands from India tied up with Google for the Android One project. The aim of this project was to provide Android smartphones at affordable prices for budget minded people in emerging markets. While newly launched phones are currently available in India, Google has planned to push them out to other developing countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the coming months.

The Spice Android One Dream UNO Mi-498 is available on Flipkart for Rs. 6299 and it runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat operating system out of the box and will be competing against the two other devices under the same project. All three devices will sport the same specifications, but the thing to observed is the design and built quality.

The Spice Dream UNO will come with a 4.5 inch display with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels and will run be powered by a 1.3 GHz Quad Core Snapdragon processor coupled with 1 GB of RAM and Mali 400 GPU. There is a 5 MP camera on the rear with LED flash, accompanied with 2 MP camera on the front. The onboard memory of the device is at 4 GB that can be further extended up to 32 GB via microSD card slot. There is a 1700 mAh battery on the back of the device to power the device. It is more likely that the device will be getting the Android L update soon once it gets released and will also be receiving the future updates also for the next two years.  Since the Google has provided stock ROM for this device, it will come with pre-installed with Google Play Service apps.

Coming to the design of the smart phone, it is pretty decent and very comfortable to hold and use with one hand since it is 9.5 mm thick, and it has curvy edges. At the front end, there is an ear piece just beside the 2 MP camera in the front. There are no hardware buttons on the front nor capacitive touch buttons as the there are on screen buttons. The bezels on the sides are thin enough, but it’s been wasted on the top and bottom. Since the buttons are on the screen, I feel that the bezel at the bottom could have been reduced.

The volume rockers and the power buttons are at the right side of the device, and nothing can be found on the left side. At the top, there is a 3.5 mm audio jack and a USB port at the bottom. At the back, the device has a 5 MP camera and just below it is a LED flash. The Spice branding can also be seen on the back and below there is a speaker grill above which it is printed as androidone.

The Spice Dream UNO will feature a 4.5 inch FWVA IPS LCD display which is pretty decent and will be powered by a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor coupled with 1 GB of RAM and Mali 400 MP GPU. The battery on the device is at 1700 mAh that can be removed. These are some decent specifications considering the pricing of the device. The on-board memory of the device is at 4 GB out of which 2.27 GB is user available, and it can be extended up to a maximum of 32 GB via microSD card slot. Apart from this, spice is providing 10 GB of free cloud backup and Google cloud storage of 25 GB. Since the back cover is removable, the two SIM slots are above the battery and above which there is a microSD slot.

The UI is beautiful as the device runs stock Android, and we did not find any kind of issues with it. You can also set up the widgets and shortcuts for easier use.  The initial impressions of the device are very good and will be coming with the complete review of the Spice Dream UNO after using it for few days. The device is pretty good with its software and hardware, something similar to Motorola Moto E that made a buzz in the market but the Spice Dream UNO has a front camera as well as a led flash on the rear that Moto E lacked. The device is currently available on Flipkart for Rs. 6299 and you can buy it right away.
