How to Update Galaxy S GT I9000 with NEW Value Pack XXJW4 2.3.6 Firmware
After much fuss about the Value Pack, Samsung now seems to have become serious in rolling out the same and in the due course of this article we will be checking out on how you can install this all new Value Pack firmware which is dubbed as XXJW4 and is the Gingerbread which ropes in the 2.3.6 firmware version. Over a period of this article we will be checking out on how you can apply this update irrespective of the current firmware you are on.
As of now this update is not yet pushed via KIES officially in most of the countries but it’s expected to be pushed soon.
Caution: please note that this process should be only applied to the GT I9000 smartphone and not on any other model of Galaxy S.

Special Instructions to Users on Custom ROM Firmware:
- If you are on any of the custom ROM firmwares, then you first need to back up all the data which you can do by following the list of pre requisites and then turn Off your device so as to enter the device in the recovery mode.
- The Galaxy S I9000 can be entered into recovery mode by holding the Volume Up button + the Home key button (the middle button). While holding these both buttons, you need to turn ON your device.
- In recovery mode, select Wipe data/factory reset and also you need to select Wipe Cache partition and then reboot your device by selecting reboot system now with the help of Volume rocker keys.
Also, you need to get into the “Advanced Settings” and clear the “Dalvik Cache” too if any along with that also disable the “Voodoo Lag fix” if installed any. Once it’s done, you then will have to select the option of “reboot system now” for restarting the device.

I recently upgraded my GSG with XXJVU which has a supposedly value pack. Is it the same as this or is this firmware superior enough to warrant yet another upgrade? If so, I’ll be waiting for root instructions since I have Titanium Backup to restore contacts and settings. Any idea when?
Also, I didn’t download the files but in the XXJVU download Odin3 v1.0 was included and the upgrade got stuck on bin.boot. It wasn’t until I replaced it with Odin3 v1.7 from another source that I was able to flash the firmware.
The huge RAM on this firmware intrigues me, does it help reduce lag? thx

Ok, I did the update without returning to XXJVU and the phone just wouldn’t start. So after 5 minutes of shitting my pants i went back to XXJVU and then updated with this. Works fine so far

Hi there, trying to install it,, what happens is when ODIN finish’s it , the status says PASS with a green box but on the device 2 to 3 times says it shows FAIL and then PASS then FAIL like this onwards. In the end it gives the options like when we get it in RECOVERY MODE, I go for REBOOT, it reboots but gets stuck in a repeating circle, stuck’s up at S logo.
This is not the 1st time I am doing this kind of stuff but can not understand the problem with this particular one.

I’m having the same problem. lots of red text on the phone at the end of installing the firmware through odin; I do a factory reset and wipe data cache, and it gets stuck in a loop of the S logo at startup.
Before this, I was using the ICS RC 4.2 firmware (rooted). could it have something to do with trying to migrate to an official rom afterwards?

Your phone’s death, I mean really gone. I had the same trouble in mine when I interrupted a flashing process and destroyed the internal flash memory. You need to have it checked by proper repair agent. Sorry about the bad news.

You all need to get your phone fixed by an expert, someone who can either fix the partition tables or format it all or something like that. Mine needed a new board that costed 177€.

My battery life has come down like crazy after this update..
Its working fine me except the twLauncher. It keeps freezing & crashing but when it works its awesome. Battery life seems to have improved a lot (with the usage of wifi). face-unlocker is more stable that what it was in JVU but it stills looks like a beta feature. Even though total available RAM is now 364, my used ram is higher that what it used to be with JVU (with similar usage). JVU did not allow me to download citibank india app (it used to say that my device is not compatible) but I could install it with JW4. tWLaunch/touchwiz has alot of new features including cool way way creating shortcuts and widget but twLauncher is so unstable that I can not even use it. Unfortunately I had to go back to adwlauncher as twLauncher is too unstable ( I have tried wiping cache etc).
Thanks to chainfire, I could root it and installed audio-video version of gtalk. But its not working well, I can see other persons video but my video does not go to the other user. Also gtalk does not display that video icon next to my name.
For installing JW4, I downloaded firmware from SamMobile and did not use pit file while installing from ODIN.
Any clue on how to make gtalk video/audio work (it used to work fine on CM7.1 when I installed from same zip file) ?

I’m having issues with my touchwiz launcher. if i run an app like the browser and then press the home button. the browser will close .and the launcher will also take some time to reload. all in all i have no multitasking capability. please help me preadeep. ive been having this issue with various samsung roms. but it was solved with a CM7 Rom. also the reason im asking is because i like stock rom.

Have found a big problem with TwLauncher.

I had tried to apply this updated twice (i was on gamerz rom, later updated to MIUI)

Neel, It was happening with me aswell. The solution I found is that, Custom ROMs user are facing this issue. Just update with any older official version from XDA like 2.3.4 (I did this) and then update it… It will fix the issue.
The Problem I think is in the ODIN, Cuz I tried ODIN that is attached with this ZIP, it didnt work. Then I try another copy ODIN taken from your other ZIPs Packages. It worked and my phone is working very fine….

Tried out the face unlock feature. Unlocks my phone with a blink of my eyes.. Superb!
Tested it out by having my friends trying to unlock the phone and to our surprise it says “FIT and APPROVED..ACCESS GRANTED”…. PATHETIC!!

I changed from 2.3.3 to the 2.3.6 value pack about 10 days ago. There were no issues whatsoever with installation, but post-install, I have some observations:
1. If ‘waking’ from flight mode or idle for over 20mins, the screen is very laggy, sometimes taking 30+secs to unlock the screen…. not good. Even worse using GO Launcher, sometimes needing 2mins recovery!!
2. Wi-Fi range is definitely reduced…..but not too bad.
3. MAJOR ISSUE with battery life. In normal use, always with WI-Fi & GPS on, ( for me – 5/6 phone calls, 10 texts, some browsing & video, checking e-mails, using google maps & navigation ) I was getting 18 – 26 hours per day. Having installed 2.3.6 Value Pack, I am lucky to get 7 – 11 hrs per day! I deliberately did not use my phone for the last two days (no phone/texts/internet/maps/navigation – but left wi-fi & GPS on as normal, so received some emails)…..I am only getting 12 hours!!!
Do you know if there is anything I can do to improve this?? (I have tried your advice on battery ‘bumping’, to no avail!). Is there a custom ROM which would improve this or should I return to my original 2.3.3 or….?

Just upgraded to 2.3.6 from the official 2.3.3.Everything is absolutely as you promised the only issues i’m facing is that the phone hangs with SPB shell 3D and live wallpapers and the battery is draining very fast.
Should I do a hard reset or root my phone to block unwanted apps.I still have 2 months of warranty left.
you can try hard resetting first, if the issue persists then re apply the update and check!

i finally got that idcom thing fixed..
but now i started it and for around 1 and a half hours i let the process go on.. but nuthing happened and it was stuck at setup analysis or sumthing like that.. not even a single bit of progress bar moved so i removed the phone and turned it on again and its wokring now.. but i want this firmware so plz can u tell me the estimated time for it complete… plz i need ur help..

I also had the problem with the boot loop… But it wasn’t hard to fix… In my case I think it happened because I was coming from ICS ROM… So… what I did was to go back to Gingerbread 2.3.5 and then I followed the instructions in here and it worked perfect. It’s very good, thank you for the tutorial

I tried installing this update but odin right at start says ..complete write failed .. and the phone goes into soft brick. with phone and pc exclamation icon. i then downloaded i9000xxjvs 2.3.5 and i was successful. Please help me to update to this value pack.
try XXJVU 2.3.6 and make sure you’re using latest odin v1.82, from there it’s easier to go to JW4, but I would upgrade from JVU to Elite’s IMM76K RC1.2, smoothest and fastest most stable rom out there.

I folowed the steps you mentioned. ie : “Go to the Path “Settings > Wireless & Network > USB Settings” and ensure that “Samsung KIES” option is ticked before connecting the phone to the computer.” but in firmware I have (XXJVU vith Android 4.0.4 and Kernel 3.1.10 Skorpion_s2 #2 there is not such a path…and my Galaxy S is not recongnised by the computer, Odin is not yellow and I don’t know what to do…. Any sug? Tks!

My mobile is just struck, it goes in loop and never starts. I am able to go to the download menu, where when i try to install Update Galaxy S GT I9000 with NEW Value Pack XXJW4 2.3.6 Firmware, ODIN says successfull, but again i cant start my mboile, the galaxy S logo goes in loop.
