Android M Developer Preview 2 Launched for Nexus Devices

Following the initial release of its new Android M operating system at its I/O developer conference, Google updated its Android M Developer Preview for the first time since it was released in late May. The latest Developer Preview update comes with build number MPZ79M for Nexus 5, Nexus 6, and Nexus 9 devices while it comes with build number MPZ79N for the Nexus Player.

All compatible Nexus devices running initial Developer Preview should start getting notifications about the OTA (over-the-air) update in the coming days, though the system or factory images are already available – users are recommended to backup their data before flashing the image.

Google included some enhancements and bug fixes. The updated build should also address issues that have been reported by developers through the external issue tracker. Android M Developer Preview 2 comes with Google Play Services 7.6 included.

Google confirmed that there were some modifications to platform permissions including external storage, Wi-Fi & Bluetooth location, as well as changes to contacts/identity permissions. Also, devices connections through the USB port will now be set to the charge-only mode by default. To access the device, you will now have to grant explicit permission.

Some API changes have been included in this build as well. For example, the Bluetooth Stylus APIs have been updated with callback events. View.onContextClickListener and GestureDetector.OnContextClickListener to listen for stylus button presses and to perform secondary actions.
