While there are quite a few number of smartphones which are actually awesome but unfortunately lack the external sd card slot. While the manufacturer may defend the same on the name of enough on board storage or might just refer to enough Cloud based Storage solutions. So, for all those who want to still make use of a solution which will allow you to expand the memory of your Android phone which doesn’t have the micro SD card slot, then thanks to USB Specification called “USB On the Go (OTG)” which adds more storage to your device by just plugging in a flash drive. So, let’s check out on how you can expand an “unexpandable” Android Phone/ tablet.
Note: Following this procedure won’t root the device in any manner.
Procedure to Expand memory of UnExpandable Android Phone:
- While you can’t plug all the Android devices directly with the help of full sized USB cables, you will be requiring the USB OTG Cable which you can get it from market.
- So next time when you are out on a trip, just connect external flash drive along with the USB OTG Cable as you can enjoy extra movies, extra songs etc.
- Connect flash drive into the USB OTG cable and plug the cable into your phone’s Micro-USB port. With luck, the phone will immediately jump into USB host mode Plug the flash drive into the USB OTG cable, and then plug the cable into your phone’s Micro-USB port. With luck, the phone will immediately jump into USB host mode.
- Not all smartphones / tablets will be supporting the USB OTG functionality, you can try rooting the device to add the support of USB OTG. For example, this one works on HTC One Android smartphone. Kingo Android Root is a free app that can make short work of the rooting process on most devices.
So next time when you are buying a smartphone with no expandable memory card slot, make sure that that device supports at least USB OTG. Do let us know in the comments section just in case if you face any issues in the process of USB OTG techniques.
