LG Files Trademark For “G Pen”, will challenge Samsung Galaxy Note’s S-Pen – Details

If a recent trademark filing is any indication, the LG could be challenging Samsung Galaxy Note’s S-Pen. The trademark filed is for a device called the LG G Pen. While LG has a stylus phone of its own in the form of the LG G3 Stylus, it isn’t as prominent.

The LG G Pen has been registered for by LG with the US Patent and Trademark office (USPTO). It was filed on December 3rd, 2014, and “will be assigned to an examining attorney approximately three months after filing date.”

The trademark filing covers a variety of product types, ranging from smartwatches, tablets, smartphones, and so on. It is possible that it could be the name of a stylus accessory, or it could be LG’s renewed effort at making a phone with stylus support, like what Samsung did with their Galaxy Note series.

When it comes to smartphones with styluses, many think of Samsung’s Galaxy Note series and the S Pen that usually accompanies the device. This is because the accompanying stylus is more than just a stylus and has been optimized and designed to work in sync with the smartphone itself.

LG has also trademarked “ G Scrawl,” the description of which has equally as many open-ended terms as the G Pen’s. It’s possible this could be the name of a new app for scribbling pictures and notes that LG would look to market for the G Pen.

Even Lenovo has trademarked a new stylus-related mark — WRITEit — that tells of an app that can interpret handwriting from the use of a stylus or digital pen.

According to South Korean siteheraldcorp.com, LG has apparently decided only to launch a single flagship handset next year, instead of two such devices as it did in the past. Rather than releasing a G Pro 3 phablet at some point in the first half of 2015 to take on similarly sized devices from the competition, LG will apparently consolidate its efforts on the G4.

LG G Pen could be a standalone stylus for LG devices, a companion gadget for the LG G4, or something else entirely.
