Samsung Galaxy 5 i5503 vs Galaxy 551 I5510 Comparison

Low end Android phones perform really well and Android phones have a lot of features and if you’re used to the QWERTY layout, then you can have a slick QWERTY Slide-Out keyboard on your android phone too. There a lot of options nowadays and one can choose any form factor and still enjoy the smartphone. How would a touch-only device compete with a QWERTY Slideout device? Here’s our take:

Samsung Galaxy 5

The Galaxy 5 has a 2.8 inches TFT Capacitive touchscreen which has a resolution of 240×320 and also has an Accelerometer for Auto-Rotate but the Galaxy 551 comes with a bigger screen of about 3.2 inches and has Accelerometer too.

Both the displays support upto 16M colors.

Galaxy 5 has a 2 Mega pixel camera and photos are shot a maximum resolution of 1600×1200 but the Galaxy 551 has an improved 3.15 Megapixel camera which supports Autofocus and shoots at a maximum resolution of 2048×1536 pixel  pixels.

Both phones record video too, at the rate of 15 frames per second. Both phones do not have a secondary camera on them.

The Galaxy 5 has 170MB of internal memory and a microSD card slot which supports upto 16 Gigabytes of storage. On the other side, the Galaxy 551 has 160MB of inbuilt storage and supports microSD upto 32GB. Both the phones come with 1GB microSD out of the box but we’d strongly recommend purchasing one of higher capacity.

Both the phones have three HSDPA bands: 900 / 2100 and give maximum speeds upto 7.2Mbps.. Wi-fi bands are the same with both supporting the latest bands of Wi-Fi, the 802.11n and the older ones like b and g well. GPS is available on both the phones and Bluetooth 2.1 is available on both the phones, along with A2DP. Both phones have USB connectivity via the standard Micro USB port and support USB 2.0.

Both the phones support stereo FM Radio.

Operating System and UI:

Both the phones are based on Samsung’s TouchWiz UserInterface over Android. The i5503 runs on Android 2.1 Eclair, which is a pretty old version of Android considering that the latest one is 2.3 Gingerbread. However, the Galaxy 551 has Android 2.2 Froyo on it, which is a newer version of the Android operating system.

Battery and Processor

Both the Galaxy 5 i5503 and Galaxy 551 have a 1200mAh battery, which is pretty decent considering these are low end devices. Samsung claims upto 521 hours of standby time and 9.5 hours of talktime on 2G on the i5503 Galaxy 5 and around 520 hours of standby time and 9 hours of talktime on 2G. Pretty much the same performance on both.

Both the phones have a 600Mhz processor but the Galaxy 551 Slideout has a GPU in it as well. It has a Adreno 200 GPU and comes with a MSM7227 chipset from Qualcomm.

Other points & Conclusion

The Galaxy 5 has a pretty small screen of 2.8 inches which isn’t that comfortable for a nice Android experience while the slider QWERTY Galaxy 551 has a 3.2 inch TFT screen which is neat. On the whole, the slideout keyboard on the Galaxy 551 helps effectively while texting or emailing quickly and also gives you the convenience and ease to press some physical buttons to get things done. The 551 is priced slightly more than the Galaxy 5 and you can put in that amount and go for the 551.
