Samsung Galaxy Alpha Smartphone Hands-0n & Initial Impressions

The South Korean Giant, Samsung has come out of the box and made some changes to the hardware section of its device. To answer its critics for the plastic built, Samsung pushed the Galaxy Alpha with a Metallic chassis and were also for its slim body and a perfect fit to the hand. Samsung has maintained it physical home button; it also has some features from its flagship device Galaxy S5. Features like the fingerprint scanner, heart rate monitor, the perforated back cover and few other things. The device is just 6.7mm thick making it one of the thinnest devices from the company and weights 115 grams. All these things together added with its small bezels give the device a premium look and feel for its users.

The Galaxy Alpha comes with a 4.7 inch capacitive touchscreen AMOLED display with 720 x 1280 pixels resolutions giving a pixel density of 312ppi. The device is powered with an Octa core Exynos or a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor coupled with 2 GB of RAM and Mali-T628 MP6 / Adreno 330 GPU. The device runs the Android 4.4.4 KitKat operating system, and we can expect it to get the Android 5.0 Lollipop update soon. The on-board memory of the device is at 32 GB and sadly we do not have the option of extending since it lacks the micro SD card slot. To power the device there is an 1860 mAh battery on the back that is removable.

There is a 12 MP auto focus camera on the rear with (4608 x 2592 pixels) LED flash that can record 2160p videos at 30fps (frames per second). The rear camera is accompanied with a decent 2.1 MP front facing camera. There are many modes in the camera section like the Auto mode, Beauty face, Shot and more, Panorama, Virtual tour and Dual camera. Many other modes can be manually downloaded from the Galaxy Apps store. The device supports 4G LTE connectivity and also has other connectivity’s like Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth v4.0, GPS, GPRS and micro USB slot. The device will be available in Charcoal Black, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold, Scuba Blue and Sleek Silver, giving its user many options to choose from.

The Galaxy Alpha has a notification LED on the front and also a 2.2 MP camera. At the bottom, there is the physical home button and either side of it are capacitive touch, back and recent buttons. To the left of the device we can find the volume rockers and the power button is placed to the right of the device. At the bottom we can find the single grill speaker, microphone and the micro-USB port. To the top we can see another microphone beside the 3.5 mm audio jack.

To the rear of the device, we can find the 12 MP camera with LED flash and also the heart rate monitor. Since the back cover is removable, the battery is removable, and we can also see the SIM slot where a Nano-SIM goes in. The fingerprint scanner is on the physical home button as we have seen in the galaxy S5, and we can set up to three different fingerprints, and only those three fingerprints can be used to unlock the device. This provides more security and also very much useful in online payments. This device is PayPal certified for its security making sure that its users do online tractions without any fear. Nothing else can be found except Samsung branding in the middle.

The heart rate sensor at the rear is accompanied with the Samsung S Health’s app. Samsung’s traditional TouchWiz UI has been used on the device, and the first home screen is a social feed and news screen called as Magazine. Samsung features such as Smart pause, Smart stay, Multi window and Download booster are all present in the Galaxy Alpha. The device is available for around Rs.40000 and will be competing against many other mini variants of the flagship devices.
