Galaxy S III

Samsung Galaxy SIII Vs Nokia Lumia 920 – Specs & Features Comparison

It was a time when Samsung had almost nothing in the market when compared to Nokia when it was all about the low-profile devices and Nokia was always a winner with every user thinking about not even a second option. Things changed, high-end devices entered the market and all of a sudden, Google’s Android operating system took away all the fame and fan base that Nokia had built since years. Nokia has been doing the trial and error stuff since quite a long time, and shook hands with Microsoft for using their Windows Phone operating system to their high-end devices but that too doesn’t seem to have the factors which an Android user would look for, in their Android phones.

Anyways, here we compare two of the most advanced and recent best devices from the Korean and Finnish manufacturers, as the Android based Samsung Galaxy S III takes on the Windows Phone based Nokia Lumia 920, which their manufacturer regards to as the best smartphone in the world. One of the major mistakes from Nokia is as always, the wrong timing for launches where Samsung and Apple makes most of its sales already and then Nokia launches its best device, which almost goes unnoticed to the actual smartphone users. Nokia is yet to launch the Lumia 920 but we got a hands-on with the device, and we liked a few things about the phone.
Samsung though would not be able to steal all the love and Nokia doesn’t deserve all the criticism because physically, Nokia still makes sturdy and stronger devices than Samsung. Let’s go in depth on the various features and specifications compared.

Samsung Galaxy S III vs Nokia Lumia 920

Design and Display

Design is totally incomparable, and they both can hold the top position in being the best designed smartphones. But when talking about the display, we would see a larger one in the Samsung Galaxy S3, having a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display when compared to the TFT capacitive touchscreen with the size of 4.5-inch in the Lumia 920. It wouldn’t make the Galaxy S III’s screen a total winner, because Nokia did make the display a lot better by integrating the PureMotion HD+ technology, and the graphics quality is excellent.

Processor

Samsung might confuse the buyers with its different versions of the Galaxy S III having different specs, as what you see in the International version is the Exynos 4412 quad-cored 1.4 GHz Cortex-A9 processor, while the US version of the Galaxy S III has a Snapdragon S4 dual core 1.5 GHz processor. Nokia has placed a Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon dual core 1.5 GHz Krait processor, and keeping in mind the interface of Windows Phone OS, the processor would provide faster functionality.

Memory and RAM

The storage is limited in the Lumia 920, where it provides 32GB of internal storage, and there is no provision for expansion through any external card. The Galaxy S III comes with the 16GB and 32GB versions, and along with that there is even an option to expand the memory by using the MicroSD card. There is a 1GB RAM in the Lumia, similar to the International version of the Galaxy, while the US version has got 2GB RAM.

Camera – Rear and Front

Let us be practical here. Talking only about the specs won’t help, because the world had seen how Nokia faked the pictures claiming the captured ones to be taken using the PureView camera. But still, the camera capture quality is same in both Lumia 920 and the Galaxy S3, having 8-megapixel lens. Samsung has a better front camera, with the 1.9MP lens compared to Nokia Lumia 920’s 1.3MP lens in the front camera.

Battery

Not much of a difference, because the Galaxy S III has a 2100 mAh battery while the Nokia Lumia 920 has a 2000 mAh Li-ion battery, but when taking the screen size into consideration, the battery capacity is justified and there is no clear winner. Though to remind our readers, Samsung Galaxy S III has the best battery backup when compared to some of the high-end devices while browsing the web and making calls.

Apart from what we discussed above, one of the major factor to keep the devices at their best level is the operating system, where the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS provides users with loads of features and customization options, while the Windows Phone 8 OS which comes newly into Nokia Lumia 920, has something totally different for the users. They would find the interface a complete one, with everything available easily, but when the question is about the operating system, it totally depends on the user’s needs.

Connectivity options in both the devices are the same where 3G, 4G LTE, NFC and the Bluetooth 4.0 is available.

Final Words

Samsung has been on the top of the list in the market, with features and specs that users have been expecting to see in their hands, while Nokia Lumia 920 still belongs to the manufacturers and the OS developers, who keep limiting a lot of things, and we keep thinking that the device would have been better if we saw something “open” like the Android OS. Till we have the Nokia Lumia 920 in our hands, we would call the Galaxy S III a clear winner, and who knows, the decision might not change even after a hands-on comparison is done too.
