Sony has announced something new in the gadgets arena, with the QX10 and QX100 smartphone lens cameras which are the ones for the Android and iOS devices, as the lens attachment and dedicated lens cameras which do not possess a screen, but sync themselves with the smartphone to make the device a screen for the camera. To leave lesser surprises for the actual IFA event, these lens cameras were leaked on Amazon before the Sony’s event at the IFA 2013 event in Berlin.
The QX10 features a smaller image sensor and 10x optical zoom, while the QX100 has got a 20-megapixel sensor that comes from the RX100 Mark II point and shoot camera. It would be a 18-megapixel lens in the QX10. The aperture range in the QX10 is f/3.3-f/5.9, while that in the QX100 is f/1.8-f/4.9 lens.
You don’t always have to hold these lens cameras separately on the other hand, because there’s an attachment through clip possible where you can hold the smartphone and have the lens hanging on the back, and do it’s job of capturing the pictures controlled by you on the either gadget – lens or smartphone. There would be an SD card slot coming in the lens for the photos storage, and you would be getting these lenses in white and black colors.
Either Wi-Fi on the same network, or the NFC tapping is what you need to pair both the devices and start the capturing, and there are endless possibilities with this combination – you can control the capturing from the smartphone, it acts as a screen for the camera, it can be used as an additional storage and also, you can use it as a social media sharing tool.
The QX10 and QX100 feature Wi-Fi, CMOS image sensor, One-touch connectivity and the BIONZ image processors. These both were demo-ed with the Sony Xperia Z1 device. As of now, Amazon has this listed with the following prices:
- Sony QX10 Lens Camera: $248
- Sony QX100 Lens Camera: $498
The pricing could change later on when the lenses are actually available in the market, but these prices were asked for the pre-ordering and who knows, these could be the final prices too.
We aren’t sure what the lens would really help in, when the Xperia Z1 is already coming in with one of the best smartphone cameras having a 20.7 megapixel Sony G Lens, and there’s a load of new features that the smartphone camera has already got. Hope these lenses have the compatibility to the Xperia Z, which has the 13MP camera and the same dimensions, screen to that of the Z1.
Meanwhile, check out the official announcement of the Xperia Z1 done by the company at the IFA event, which claims to be the best Android smartphone camera till date.
