Swype has always been on the upper side when we talk of the keyboards, although the stock one in the Android OS ahs been updating itself with some awesome enhancements and Swiftkey on the other end is trying its best to establish itself in competition to Swype. The gesture based typing on the Android keyboard is quite good really, but Swype has been making noteworthy changes and the recent update has taken it to the next level.
The update for Swype would be a piece of cake for the large phone owners, as the split and mini keyboards are now available as a part of this, and this was earlier seen in the iOS keyboard where the iPad users boasted of typing from the sides using the split keyboard.
There is a bilingual support, and the numbers are always great – with over 1000 language combinations like the English-Spanish etc., and there is a support for the Indian languages such as Marathi, Telugu, Gujarati, Hindi, Malayalam etc.
The new features apart from the Split, Mini keyboard and the bilingual support, include:
- New theme – Blackbird (earlier themes were Holo, Arctic, Classic, Silver, Night, Cream, Midnight, Storm, Mercury, Cloud, Sunrise, Red, Magenta and Boston)
- Combined secondary and tertiary menus
- Accessibility support
- New search gesture
- Fixed bugs taht were reported by the users
- Long-press delay
- Keyboard height and layouts
- Word list font size
- New Dragon Dictation features
- Real-time results based on Phrases
- Dictation language independent of keyboard language
The continuous dictation feature is excellent, as it allows the user to talk on their phone and watch the words appear on their screen as they speak, and this is added with the bilingual support. There’s quite a lot to offer by a keyboard app.
There is a free version of swype and also a paid one at $3.99, and there is no need to guess that there is quite a lot of difference between both the versions, but if you are unhappy with the stock keyboard where each letter has to be typed separately, the free version would do for the pro users who have a good grasp on the alphabets and quick typing.
